Is It Finally Time To Ban Loot Boxes? | MindGames

Ойындар

From FIFA to Star Wars, the mass adoption of loot boxes is one of the most controversial things to happen to mainstream gaming in the last 15 years. But despite consistent fears of their mechanical similarities to gambling, and their potential to cause harm to vulnerable players, they remain a profitable means of monetisation for hundreds of games.
So are loot boxes gambling, and do they carry the same potential for harm as gambling does? We spoke to Professor Pete Etchells, author of Lost in a Good Game and Dr Alexander Kriss, author of The Gaming Mind to try and understand the effect loot boxes are having on gamers.

    I think games need to make it easier to get coins in game rather then have to spend Hella money to purchase coins and then while doing that make the looting system harder to get rarer things while also making it easier to get coins or more coins from playing the game basically actually reward the players that put in hard work playing without spending money to get the good things

    When I was 14 I played a lot of csgo. My friend was opening lootboxes and won a knife. I wanted one so badly that I also started to buy keys and open lootboxes to try and get a knife. After a week I lost about $150. What stopped me from buying more keys? I ran out of saved money. If I had more I would have spent it. I never even ended up getting the knife. There should be more regulations on these lootboxes. Another child may get more addicted than I was.

    You cannot purchase the loot box engrams, you can only earn them in game. It's turned into a store with microtransactions, and the loot box is a chance at those items earned in game. While they have also given players a way to purchase items in the store with a currency also earned in game called bright dust.

    I understand what you're saying, but I don't think that's largely true. There are numerous articles, and videos on this channel which are incredibly critical of loot boxes for exactly this reason, including the likes of FIFA and Battlefront 2. To use SWBF2 as an example, the review gave it 6/10 and specifically calls out the loot box and microtransaction systems in the multiplayer modes, there's a whole 12 minute video about the controversy surrounding the loot boxes in the community, and a video where we detail how little you get for $100. Last year's FIFA review called out Ultimate Team for being pay-to-win, as it has done for years. It might vary among the staff but I don't think it's fair to say we've never been critical of loot boxes or games that have them.

    I played a Kabam game and heard stories of other players doing desperate things to remain competitive. One player admitted they were failing to pay his mortgage and was scared when someone knocks at the door as it could be the bank trying to foreclose on them Others running up mad CC debt. There was also a belief the game itself was inserting "their own" players on a server within unlimited coins to push the existing whales to outspend them so they can remain top dog on that server. In the end the game turned into "you spend $50k+ to play at a high level, or you spend your time building an account for the whales to crush. I just stopped playing them all together. I am fine with spending, but when you need to go pass $100 a month then you might need to consider this game will have a short life as players will continuously quit and those that spend huge money will rule a dead server.

    Overwatch had loot boxes that were so easy to get for free that if you didnt have your skins you had to be either extremely unlucky or you just didn't play the game. And now they're getting rid of them in favor of a shop. So now instead of playing the game for a chance at good stuff, and over time collecting everything(no repeat drops) now you have to pay or no content, they'd have to have a pretty robust battlepass to make up for that.

    Mainly,regulating it does not imply in efficiently reduce the harm of loot boxes. Thankfully,the market trend is to change the loot boxes design into something alike battle passes,just like Call Of Duty did (a mechanic that,in most cases,does not alter the gameplay for those whom not buy it,mainly by adding cosmetics,which pactically does no harm for this population,making a neutral-win relationship). If we compare the number of games with predatory pay to win lootboxes,like Battlefront II between 2016 and 2022,we can see a crescendo-decrescendo shaped graphic,which reaches it peak between the beggining 2017 and the end of 2018.

    rocket league had a great loot box system before they changed it. you received crates from playing the game which you could open with a $1 key. what made the system so great is that the community added value to crates which allowed players to trade them for items and/or keys. basically you could get all the crate cosmetics if you didn't want your crates and were willing to trade them. this allowed whales the option to pay for everything through crate gambling while the people that didn't want to spend money could exchange their crates for the items they wanted.

They are not funding the continued development of a game, they are a means of generating additional profit for the publisher and shareholders. Not a single cent of revenue earned via loot boxes or the sale of MTX ever gets into the pockets of game devs, their salary and funding is secured long before a games launch.

    Microtransactions in general can cause some pretty big problems, even when you know exactly what you are getting. Also I have seen many "micro" transactions that cost more than $5 a pop, even more than $10. At what point do microtransactions stop being micro? I spent probably close to $90 on a mobile game once before I realized what was happening and I could have bought nearly 2 launch price console games for the same amount. What had I been spending that money on in game? To unlock puzzle pieces or shards to unlock a cool character. The unfortunate bit being that even after unlocking him, there would be more grinding and lootboxes or transactions needed to get him fully leveled up. I quit playing the game entirely.

    That's the thing though. Most of these lootbox games prey upon youngsters. Huge chunk of their income comes from underaged player. And you cannot expect most kids to have self control as much as adults do. It's the reason why they don't let kids and teenagers into the casino. If it's an adult, yeah sure, the person themselves is to blame too. What we should talk about here is 'Does lootboxes count as gambling?' -- If so, then there should be strict age restriction at the very least.

    @@Nova-nz1zu Gambling can become an addiction. Addiction is more problematic to solve. Being attentive of what they purchase wouldn't cut it, even when they're not allowed to buy all that much, because some kids cannot be responsible for themselves nor possess critical thinking, it becomes really difficult to control and possibly result in worse reaction, like lashing out, stealing from their parents or others, or once they become adult, they spend money irresponsibly on these stuff which is very much more harder to change course. Though it doesn't happen to everyone. It certainly happens to some. I've had experience with people with addiction whether gambling or drugs since they were young. Problem is you'll never know when it starts. But once it starts, it's not as easy to deal with as one may think. It's like saying we should allow kids to play in the casino, and it falls upon the parents to control them. That wouldn't work. Better to just restrict it to some extend.

  • @Nova-nz1zu

    @Nova-nz1zu

    @@Thaibiohazard123 Casino is entirely different because unlike casino, these games are offering a free alternative. You simply have to just play the game. If a parent feels that their kid is at risk for becoming addicted to the gambling element of purchased loot boxes, it may be time for them as a parent to limit their kids screen time and get them outside rather than game developers playing nanny. Massive multi million dollar corporations can't be expected to limit a product that most of their player base (myself included) enjoy over newer more expensive systems like a battle pass, simply because a smaller portion of their players weren't taught self control.

  • @Thaibiohazard123

    @Thaibiohazard123

    @@Nova-nz1zu You can apply the same logic to casino. Why should multi-billion industry have to play nanny if their parents can't keep them out of gambling addiction? Everybody loves it. Let the kids have fun too! Throw in some 'Free 100 chips Friday'. So it's safe for kids now. If something happens, it's their parent's fault. See, when you say "most player base enjoy", you're talking about underaged kids, since it is factually less popular among older player. If the system was truly enjoyable, it wouldn't have been only popular among people who haven't fully matured. There's a reason why it works better on youngster. It relies on their immaturity to survive. I'm not saying they should remove it entirely. Age restriction seems fair enough. It's pretty much an alternative form of parent limiting their kids and be responsible to society as a whole. So I don't see why not. It doesn't affect you neither. If you're an adult, that is?

  • @ruisuthefallen4716

    Its not that deep they should just make it so its not accessible to kids. Its not about loot boxes, games in general that have purchasable skins or dlcs cause the same effect. Look at fortnite for example they have a huge fanbase that are all if not mostly kids or teens. Just make it so if you wanna purchase something the adult has to verify it via two step verification. Lastly the "loot boxes" should be rewards for gameplay and not purchasable. Also Rainbow Six Siege & Overwatch 1 do loot boxes the right way, you earn them through gameplay and in siege you can even purchase them with ingame credits. Of course you can buy them but its pointless none of the skins go away there just seasonal and R6 skins can just be gotten through ingame credit.

And if you say that loot boxes can target the most vulnerable to become addicted to gambling, you can also say that violence in the games can help those vulnerable to become violent. You can not simply justify one and not the other. Loot boxes need to go ...that's a given, but with that same measurement something needs to be done with violence...no? I don't have a problem with loot boxes, cause I don't partake in loot boxes, but I am not part of the demographic the loot boxes are created for, I am not a violent individual, I am not inclined to violence, I do not like FPS shooters, but who's to tell what other might experience when playing Doom for instance?

Violent video games are not based on psychological mechanisms designed to encourage violence. Loot boxes, however, are based on psychological principles that are specifically designed to compel people to engage with them in a reckless and compulsive manner. The same principles that underpin slot machines. We know this because developers say so themselves.

Or at least will desensitized said individuals to violence by repetition. Normalizing one or the other is wrong, difference is ... This is just one of the ways the conversation about this is very inaccurate and not too rigorous. Unpaid lootboxes are in every RPG. Loot boxes are how... well, loot is done in every game. What people are complaining about is monetized loot boxes. Shiny Pokemon are a loot box. And yes, as the video briefly mentions but glosses over, there is no meaningful difference between a monetized loot box and, say, a pack of Pokemon cards or Magic cards. Despite what the video says that is the main point of reference for the mechanics. There are more ways in which this conversation is not very good, including the equivalence of "regulating" and "banning" (loot boxes shouldn't be "banned" in the way gambling isn't "banned", this is a conversation about age ratings, first and foremost). I genuinely hate how bad the discourse about this is. Developers aren't talking about it openly, researchers are, frankly, not doing a geat job and regulators are, just like back in the day with violence, looking for a cheap win. This conversation should be so much better, more effective and more sensible than it is.

    @@mademedothis424 Monetized loot boxes are an option though, not a requirement. Again it completely falls on the individual whether or not they decide to spend money on a system that offers a free alternative because it is just that, their DECISION. I just don't see how that falls on developers who have offered a free alternative in most instances. A majority of the time, the rewards you earn are merely cosmetic, not game enhancing items which makes this debacle less of an issue on the system itself and more of an issue on the individual. Developers should not have to manipulate a system that has worked for them simply because of the minority who haven't been taught self control.

    @@Nova-nz1zu Fair enough. That's why I think this is an age ratings problem more than anything else. A lot of people are hostile about these because they don't like the mechanics, which is fine, but won't be fixed by regulation. The practical issue here is letting parents and vulnerable people know what is in the game and giving them the tools to make an informed choice.
