How Young Gamers Are Turning Into Gamblers: Loot Box Danger Parents Should Know

Loot boxes, or gacha, are items in video games that may be bought for real-world money but provide randomised rewards.
A US survey* in 2020 found that 58.0% of the top games on the Google Play store and 59.0% of the top iPhone games contained loot boxes.
Many gamers, some as young as 9 or 10 years old, end up splurging hundreds, even thousands of dollars on loot boxes. Your child might be one of them.
Five Singapore gamers recount how they gradually got hooked on buying loot boxes in games like MapleStory SEA, Genshin Impact, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2.
READ MORE: www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...
Studies have shown that this habit could lead to a gambling addiction. While countries like Belgium have banned loot boxes, the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) in Singapore work with partners like Fei Yue Community Services to counsel youths have game-related addictions.
In this video, experts and gamers share the tell-tale signs that your child’s innocent interest in a game is turning into uncontrollable gambling. They also give tips on how you can talk to your child about responsible gaming without clamping down on their freedom.

Mod enjoyer & only whale a game that I want to support here. I'd rather to cheat than to pay a game that I don't wish to pay tbh. Coz there are a lot of ways to gain an item without paying and without banned. Which is some mods that you can do it easy & low profile. Still the highest spending I've ever done is at genshin tho, by 3000$ (but it's all a good pay for me, considering that genshin saved my life for sucidie attempt) P.s: blame kokomi for my 3000$ spending 🤣

that's the real gacha, you pay for what you get. basically the reward has same value, just seems different for every person self preference. While these days "gacha" which is actually loot box gamble named as gacha, you are NOT paying for what you get, your money can be wasted for some cheap garbage or a slim chance to get a jackpot, that's basically gambling.

Convert the premium currency into real money, you will be surprised how much is spent to get just that reward you desire at full cost 3. Check if the real money is above your budget, more often then not some of these rewards will return at a later date so you could skip it for now & save up for when it comes back 4. If the cost cannot be defined as a certain number then my advice is to try the 3rd market, a fixed price is always better than recklessly spending

I realised that the relationship is not right, im underage and hes like, just one year off from being literally ten years older than me. Since he bought me a lot of stuffs and most of them cant be traded back because its bound to the player, I offered to stop playing and gave my account to him. Years later I logged in again as an adult and I find out he didnt take my account. 🤷 Edit : No, this is not romantic. I was too childish back then, I was being toxic to him, and I was so ashamed, coupled with me feeling very wrong about our age difference, I ended it all.

Why, cause games this present doesn't see you based on your skills and ability on playing the games, but instead, see you on how much money that you spend, which they called "dedication", and divide the Players on two sides, F2P and P2W, which for me, games now are not as challenging as before and for me, it easy to get bored.

There was no winning it was always on and worst of all you could make a mistake and lose everything while you were offline. Accounts could be sold for the price of a small car. I tried to be f2p but couldn’t do anything at a certain point until I paid for in game resources. Eventually after so many friends quit I started playing wow classic and with a regular subscription fee found I saved so much money in the long run. I still have friends that play that mobile game and wind up buying accounts for thousands of dollars only to sink more money on them just to play.

A lot of those gamers are pretty young and I actually played all the games this video listed lol. They remind me when i was their age. My first memorable game was the arcade Street fighters 2 when I was 12 and I always need them quarters. Once I've learned the glitch with Guile invisible throw, I was unstoppable. I later moved onto the console gaming, pc gaming and now mobile gaming. PC gaming was the most memorable for me because I get to play my first 32 multiple players match call Team Fortess at a computer lab with the fastest connection. I think email and the world wide web was fairy new. Fast forward.. I'm on a quest to see how far I can push without spending a dime on mobile games. I'm like: "why spend the money knowing you'll quit one day and you can never take anything with you but regrets"? I know every games have an expire date and all end up getting repetitive doing the same daily quest everyday. The game developers already has your money and they'll always be laughing all the way to the bank. My way of supporting the dev is playing their game. That's the greatest honor imo. And finally, mobile games are vast and I believe nobody should stay with one game. I dare to say the same for marriage hence people had to cheat/divorced their spouse. / random 2 cents.

it's not a growing problem, the problem is already here for at least a decade... it started "small" and met negative response (paid small dlc) and then somehow people started accepting it and allowing more and more... Season passes came and people got conditioned to that as well... It came to a point where you get a stripped game and need to buy double base price for the game as intended with zero day dlc's and other "cut" ingame content... and it goes further and further... lootboxes and play-to-gamble... Need for speed was a very bad example with their car upgrade-cards for example. I'm glad the backlash was big enough that they will put that plan into a fridge for at least one and a half more years before trying to condition again :')

@@NupplesRampage well since u play maplestory, u should know about the compensation event that was given by kms. It was required by law in korea to disclose any event that involves odds in game. So kms did a check and realise they fked up. Should there be no government intervention, people would have just happily cube/tier/roll inner ability for an expectation that would never occur. And also in gms marvel machine, they release the odds of getting bod etc. What abt maplesea? They did nt release anything as u can see in current gacha. At the first few gacha, people realise it is a scam cuz of the number of garbage that is in the gachapon. By releasing all the information, players are then able to make an informed information. Now of course there are whales out that and they have more than enough money to throw. But releasing information do help people who are emptying their pocket to play the game.

This video is hugely underrated. One of the players in the game I play (Hero Wars) spent $8000 in 5 minutes in loot boxes (while all teammates got 1/10 of what he got which was how I knew the amount he spent). Perhaps he is from a very wealthy family that do not really care about the money he spent, but it could be a deadly incentive for some people tried to compete with him (which not from wealthy family) This "Loot box" tactic is a "grey area" in online gaming that no many people want to talk about. Because for gamers, you got to taste of thrill of gambling with the game you are playing; For game developers, you could extract "unlimited" amount of money from the gamers. Seems like a "win-win" situation which really is NOT. The game developers just took advantage of benefiting from players with one the deadly human nature/sin that called "greed".

If I spent unnecessary money i would have to work under my dad for minimum wage until I can pay it off while also contributing to rent and the electrical bill (30% and 8% of my wage would go to it) while at the same time being lectured why i just wasted the money. The game developers need to be held accountable. They are creating a virtual casino and specifically targetting those with potential gambling addictions to spend way above their capabilities. Its basically a casino on your phone without the regulations surrounding it to protect these people with gambling addiction. This applies specifically to the 0.1%, but it is this 0.1% that the developers are actually targetting. And this is dangerous, especially on minors. As a long time gamer, the rise of mobile games and lootboxes disgust me, especially with the tactics that are implemented.

It's confirmation that the standard has been successfully changed, people are now accepting what was previously unacceptable and these companies will continue to exploit that as much as they can. They rely on your exact mentality of acceptance to continually push the envelope to make previously unacceptable practices acceptable and have no regard for how said practices effect the end user, as long as it rakes in more cash.

I was lucky to get out of that vicious cycle of spending and to free myself from the mentality of free to play. I rather buy a full game. The only time I buy DLC is if I absolutely adore the game. I played thousand of hours on Fire Emblem Three Houses and got the DLC because of my enjoyment. I never buy DLC if it is not worth it aka Pokemon Sword and Shield.
