how to waterproof a ventile jacket with fabsil gold

fabsil is a waterproofing agent for most things like boots, rucksacks, soft top cars, tents etc. this video shows you how to apply fabsil using a spray bottle.

Andy, not sure if this helps but the whole point of Ventile is, it needs to get wet to become waterproof. As it soaks up the water the thread in the fabric swells sealing all the micro holes. There are 3 cons with Ventile 1. Once wet and waterproof it will feel damp inside (especially single layer garments) 2. When wet and waterproof it gets a bit stiff and 3. It’s hellishly expensive!!! So in some respects you have actually ruined it’s natural waterproofness ! I have a Solider 95 wind proof smock which is due either a Fabsil or Nikwax proofing before the start of winter 24!! Great videos and thanks for all your hard work.👍 kind regards from Deepest Dorset

Cheers Clive for that, yer, I see what you're saying, I'm trying to override one of your cons, and that's the damp bit that gets through. In bad conditions, the dampness in the air will get to it a bit, but sometimes you just can't have both. You're right. It's up to the individual to take their choice in life I suppose. It's just one of those things. Anyway, thanks and I hope you found it interesting 👍

@on_the_mooch2708 As far as I'm concerned, when it comes to ventile or sas smocks, you definitely need wool underneath or a light waterproof underneath, or both. Being wet and cold just isn't fun.

Hi Andy. Hope you’re well. Before you start to spray, put a broom handle all the way through the sleeves so that the arms are spread out for a better coverage. Gives you a free hand. All the best. 👍🏾🇬🇧🏕

I've just done a smock jacket using the same stuff, only I might have been a tad extravagant with it, I used a full 1ltr tin, now it's semi dry I brought it indoors, and you're right it is smelly stuff, so I had to hang it back in the garage, just hoping you're right about the smell wearing off when it's dry, I don't fancy walking around smelling like a paraffin rag

You'll be OK. My 5 litres worth is gone after using it on a pile of jackets. The smell will go. If there's no breeze, then maybe open the garage doors for a couple of minutes and then shut them again, or if its not raining, hang them on the line for 1 hour👍

Oh, I see what you meant. I've never washed my jackets yet with fabsil on it. I just presume you just wash the jacket normally, let it dry, and give it a light respray.

I use it neat. I now use the ordinary fabsil. It's the same thing but doesn't smell so much as the fabsil gold. A 5 litre can covers 10 jackets. Hope this helps.

Whats the difference between Fabsil and NIKWAX? I'd never heard of FABSIL till someone just mentioned it. Currently looking at a product to re-waterproof my motorcycle textiles

Technically Dan, I don't know. Someone mentioned it to me on 1 of my videos. However, I can say that it's a better waterproofer, and I've tested it on a m65 American army jacket, which I have a video of. The only thing is it has a strong smell that you don't want in the house, but the smell will fade to nothing. It's worth trying. Hope this helps.

Fabsil is a mixture of white spirit and silicone. The white spirit helps the silicone permeate into the fabric. Once all the white spirit has evaporated you're left with a silicone fabric.... Fab-sil. Extremely water repellant but less breathable. Nikwax is a long chain hydrophobic polymer that bridges gaps in the fabric leaving space for the clothing to vent and breathe. Inherently leaving gaps for breathability Nikwax is less waterproof than Fabsil. I'd use Fabsil for motorcycle textiles as you have vent zips for breathability on the gear itself.

Looks awkward; worth it if its waterproof. Gore 8tex is a joke. You can spend £500 and still you have to muck about to keep it waterproof.

It's not so bad spraying it on, I don't think any waterproofing agent would fully be effective but with the light gortex underneath as well would make it a worthwhile combination I think.
