How To Wash Dreadlocks!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
One of the most common dreadlock misconceptions is that they can't be washed, shouldn't be washed or are difficult to wash, In this video I demonstrate how I wash my hair, in the shower, much like I would with any other hair :)

I often get asked about washing dreadlocks, whether you can and how, so...
How to wash dreadlocks... I'm going to go through the things I do for washing my hair. Then I'm going to do it! Showering on the internet. If you have any questions regarding the washing and drying of dreads feel free to drop me a comment here or on the blog!
My Washing Routine
I wash my dreadlocks in the shower and I would fully recommend washing in the shower over washing in the tub. The higher the water pressure you have, the better! Power shower? excellent. Washing with a high pressured shower means you can wash your dreadlocks thoroughly and faster, it also means you're more able to wash out the excess soap.
Get in the shower and soak the dreadlocks completely. If you have a weak shower it might take some time as the dreadlocks can hold a lot of water, depending on how long and/or thick they are.
You can then apply the soap / shampoo if you're going to use it. I only use a little over a teaspoon of soap for head.
I will apply the shampoo directly to my scalp. I will scrub it all over my head and the dreads will act like a scrubbing brush, moving it all around. You don't need to apply soap to the dreads themselves as the soap/shampoo will rinse from your head, through the locks.
After that I wash the rest of my body, leaving my head under the shower, giving the dreadlocks as long as possible with water running through them as you really want to make sure all the shampoo rinses out.
Make sure you scrub behind your ears and on your neck, these areas can get oiler than normal because the dreadlocks can keep your head warmer than normal hair - like wearing a hat.
After I'm done washing the rest of my body I return to my head, spraying it with the shower on a high setting, rinsing out the soap.
I will then squeeze water out of the dreadlocks, they don't have to be squeezed one by one, but I make sure I squeeze the water out of all of them.
After one last soak I will turn the water off.
While remaining in the shower I squeeze out as much excess water as I can. The more you can squeeze out, the better. Also the squeezing is a passive way of maintaining your dreadlocks and encouraging them to mature.

Do you use any type of natural conditioner like coconut oil? I would think with just washing dreads with shampoo would dry the dreads out and eventually cause drying of the scalp and dreads causing them to break off in weak damaged areas

I deep clean my hair every couple of months with apple cider vinegar, rosemary oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil. I have never done anything other than that and *fingers crossed* nearly 7 years in, I've never had a lock break.

Ok, well the Rosemary, tea tree and lavender oil is like a conditioner. So you've answered my questions. Apple cider vinegar is an great alternative cleanser. It doesn't strip the natural oils rather just kind of dissolves the dirt then wash out :) so, being a dread head, what type of lifestyle do you live? Do you have a video like that? Kind of like opening up about your dread journey and if it was associated with just wanting them or the deeper reason?

I do not live a particular alternate or interesting lifestyle, I'm just an undergrad student - I eat, sleep, study and make videos ^^ My dreadlock tag videos go into a little bit of why I originally wanted to start them, but the reasons differ now for why I continue to have them. If I was to start over now I would also go freeform.
So, I made my dreads about a week ago, and I've been watching your videos TONS now, cause what you do is extremely helpful! Keep it up!!

Just started watching your dread videos and I must say....thank you! Thank for simple common sense videos explaining methods. I've even had hair stylists tell me things I thought didn't make much common sense. Also, not many people have good clean looking dreads to model after but yours seem great. Once again, thank you. I'm just starting mine so this has been very helpful.
Much thanks, I just started a (single) dread and it's nice to have some positive info on how to proper manage and care for this dread. Thanks again!
Im glad that you left this archive of dread videos. My young brother just started his locs and he had no idea of what to do so i sent him straight here for help. I thank you for being awsome and hope to see new videos of your new adventures. ☺

How can anyone not love this! You made my day! You are so funny and totally adorable. Thanks for the demo. It is so kind of you .
Wanted to say a big thanks! definitely a great help for all of us beginning our dread journeys
I am three weeks into my locks and they are about to my mid back.. Not Short! Your Videos are helping!! Thank you for being so Boss!
Dreads, they come with a built in hair band :D
Well there are some upsides to them being short! Less washing and drying time and there's less hair to shrink up so you get fewer loops and lumps! They'll settle down after you've slept on them for a while, failing that they should soften after you start to wash them. It doesn't take much / any work to get them like mine, just lots of patience / forgetting they exist =] Have fun with your journey!
I WISH it was a power shower. If I had a power shower I would be in heaven. Instead I have a shower head that isn't designed to deal with the level of pressure that I put through it.. it's slowly tearing itself apart, but I love it!
Thank you so much for your informative videos. I got dreads from the salon a week ago. She did the knot at the scalp, then crochet and blunt them at the bottom. I have exactly 36 dreads. My hair was down to my thighs, and straight, and not its about waste length. I'm excited for my dread journey. I will wash my hair every saturday, and also use the sea salt solution. My babe dreads are super tight right now, and I'm scared to wash them, but I'll be super careful with them. Your dreads are awesome and thank you again!
You have to wait for it to lock up! It's possible to use a crochet hook to pull it back in, but with young dreads you'll find it just falls back out again when you wash next. It's completely normal and to be expected that young dreadlocks are going to be messy and frizzy. They take months to mature and then once they've matured they will lock up the loose hairs by themselves. If you try and force them to be neater it will take longer for them to mature.
Your videos are my favorite. I have a few locks, not a whole head but your videos are really helpful. Thank you! c:
Super satisfying, definitely want to get dreadlocks for sure.
Thanks man, this and your drying video just helped me so much to wash my 5 day old baby dreads. x
Did I just take a shower, watching a video of another dude taking a shower? No, but I’d imagine that’ll be funny. Been really interested in getting dreads for a while, but want to learn as much as I can before doing them. I haven’t found a source yet that I like. But coming across your videos I think I’m going to dive in and do it. Thank you for being informative and helpful and to the point. Bingeing all your videos!
Did my lox on the 18th and washed 5 days later....It did WONDERS for the knotting process IMO...beside all the fuzzies...Thanks for showering with me ;)

I wish there was KZread back when I had dreadlocks. I used to wash mine one lock at a time, it was such a hassle. *thumb up*
Its amazing how absorbent they are!
This is actually a really cute video haha. I appreciate this so much though as someone considering dreads and trying to learn the way.
thanks I appreciate the time you took to make this!!! your videos have helped me along my journey(:
I can just listen to your voice all day love the accent 💓🙂
I waited a month or so b4 washing w African black soup liquid. But my locks are bleached and the extra oil from my head seemed to help w/o any scalp irration. I recommend not getting them wet every time ya shower too. That's what dries out your scalp bc they do take along time to fully dry. Keep up the good work Lazy!
You are incredibly helpful thank you so much!
love the tie hair trick never thought of that
You're awsome! I just laughed and laughed at this video!! In a good way!!! Thank you
just one tip: when u don't use the shower don't let water run great video man, you're really helping me with considering to start dreadlocks, your information really helped me and showed me it's not just normal hair
That's interesting. I never knew how your hair type washed hair nor grew dreads. I have twisty dreads like black spaghetti. LOL I like your hair. very nice.
omg you are so pretty and funny gonna watch all of your videos about to start dreads
Since I've already posted. You might read that question I just posted I was just going to say thank you for giving up your time to help atleast me know more and feel way more confident in my dreads :)
Having previously been a hairstylist, I can tell you that even without dreadlocks it is very rarely necessary to wash the entire length of your hair. Unless you have extraordinarily oily hair/scalp then washing the scalp is enough. Some shampoo or soap will naturally make it's way down the length of the hair shaft as you clean the scalp and that is usually sufficient. To actively scrub the hair shaft only serves to damage it.
Lol oh wow NEVER realized to tie in knot like u did WOW thanks I clip or tie back that's VERY cool tyy👍
I love the fact that someone was holding a camera in front of you while you showered
Thanks for the help, love your videos. and don't take this the wrong way, you're really cute haha. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for this.
oh ok, good because I was hoping I wasn't doing it wrong haha. Thank you so much! your a huge help :)

Oh ok good, because I don,t really like the thought of using wax in my hair. And thank you so much! I'm going to watch it! And i'll check out the site. :)
That P&G add was pretty sweet. I usually don't like most of the ads.
Thank You for making this. :)
hello, loved the video, I watched it mainly because I have been thinking of getting dreads for quite some time now and I hear a lot about how they smell, so i wanted to check it out! so thank you for clearing that up! :D but my question is, (hopefully you can help) whats the quickest way to dread your hair? I know it takes months for them to mature and such, but do you HAVE to use wax and everything?
I would put that down to this not being part of my usual day-to-day routine! Well, the filming that is!
Your videos are so damn helpful! thank you!
I think it's hilarious you did this in the shower.
I find after I follow your process, a second washing is needed to concentrate on sectioning off hair in 4 parts. Then I scrub down the entire length of my locks. This is especially necessary to remove cigarette aromas. Also, although I use shampoo regularly (2-3x week), incorporating a monthly saltwater washing works wonders.
great video and very informative. (don't be so embarrassed about being videoed in the shower. you are gorgeous ;) )
i agree you should wash everything hahah thanks for your videos really
Man wish an asian dude looks good with dreads. I like your videos! Seeing more makes me wanna get my hair dreaded.

nothing to see here, just gonna wash myself. for the awkward guy you see yourself you are quit genius. my dreads are going in on the 4th of november and the past few days i have been seeing almost all your vids which has been very enjoying. grtz a to be dreaddy
i have wanted dreads for a long time now about three years , so i just started mine myself. my question is sence mine are very new as three days old ... what is a good non residue organic soap i can use sence i dont have the dreadlock soap that your using? thanks by the way i love your videos that you do they are VERY HELPFUL !!
You might not want to be quite so harsh, mine are like rope and I like to give them a good scrubbing. Friction is also good for the dreads and any loose hairs that get knocked out will quickly start to lock up again on their own. I find that the tougher I treat them, the tougher they get.
Well, now after practically taking a shower with you:), the only question I have is if you use anything to moisturize your dreads or if you just stick with the deep cleanse(which i watched and is helping tons, thanks so much!) and shampooing?
I use the Dreadhead HQ soap in this video and you can get that from their website.
Thank you😉😊😘
I never found that shampoo to be drying. Bronner's is also a fine shampoo but only when it's heavily diluted.
Sorry if I missed you discuss this already - but how soon is it safe to wash your hair for the first time after getting baby dreads? I know you need to be extra careful with them while they're new, is there anything in particular you should do? - or avoid? Should they be blow-dried? Squeezed with a towel after I assume is ok? So for so many questions.
im thinkin of gettin dreads new style
Ok quick question, when you do the twist an rip method is the dread going to be kinda frizzy? or is that dreads in general?
awesome! :)
I’m getting dreadlocks done on Wednesday through the crochet method ? I’ve been watching your videos a lot and you know a lot about them what is your opinion on making dreads through crochet ? 😃 thank you 🙏🏻
Your dreads are wonderful! I got a pang seeing you tie them up. I used to love being able to do that. I miss them so much. How do you cope with lint?
@LazyDreads
8 жыл бұрын
+Damaged Companion Satellite I avoid situations which would expose them to excessive lint, I make sure that they do not get anything on them that would attract or hold lint, and I deep clean them to help remove anything that may get stuck in or on them.
I have a video that's all about how often dreads should be washed :) watch?v=ZfgZjUFkTbE

You can get dr bronner's organic soap. Get the liquid dr bronner's and mix it 10 parts water to 1 part soap. The soap mix will still be strong enough to use as a shampoo but not so strong that it'll be difficult to rinse it out. Also it'll last you a while.
What do you think about individual wraps using yarn handsome? Also, how do you die dreads? For instance, the ends?
How long should I wait from after I just get my dreads done to wash them.
Hey Bro . . . how you doing ? Great i hope ...... Anyway can you suggest name of some shampoo or soaps to wash it . Thankyou
Well I don't leave the house much either! Although that's not through illness, it's just... well. Anyhow, big beanies are awesome and especially when you have young kinda mad dreads that you need to control / cover up. The friction from the hat also helps make loose hairs get a little frizzy and therefore become more likely to knot up!
Thaaank you :)
I had a question about bugs and your (anybody's) locs I know when I do stuff out in the wood or just outside sometimes I can find a tick or 2 on my scalp and with dreads does doing checks and stuff hard? I'd be scared of them crawling by a root and me passing over them and getting Lyme disease or somethin'
Should you use conditioner or not??
@Lazy Dreads Is it okay to wring baby dreads? Another video said it causes knots and bumbs.
Wow thank you +lazy dreads
I've had my dead for about 2 1/2 weeks since then I've washed them twice I knowtou say it really up to the person but asking for your advice when would I be able to wash normally ?
Oh okay yeah I finally wanted to get dreads took me 2 years to think about it and I just don't know how much to start with thanks oh and umm I was thinking 33 do you think that's good ?
nice! (also hellfest 2012 represent!)
Which sampoo is used for itcing or dandruff please tell me
i hate just the weight of having dreads out of the shower ... mine are about 2 ft longer then that .. and it gets old sometimes .. but id really like to try that shampoo out .. i have to blowdry also ... it would be way .... way to long to dry naturally
can you wash your dreads with regular shampoo or do you need a dread shampoo?
They can be washed as often as you like. But usually once every 2-3 days because they take longer to wash and dry than normal hair and therefore it's not normal to wash them every day. Of course you can still shower every day while keeping your hair dry.
Do I have to re twist my dreads after washing.wont it get puffed up and loose if I don't re twist every time I wash them
this will come in handy. people tell me I shouldnt get dreads because you cant wash them. but ive been wanting dreads forever now and im growing my hair out now for them!
Hey bro I've got 3 months of back comb and now neglect dreads. It looks like you're a lil harsh with your locks when you're washing your scalp. Since mine are even close to being as locked up as yours , is it okay to be that harsh with my scalp too? Because right now I use a baking soda rinse and just use my fingertips to rub around each base of each dread
Can you use Dr. Bronner's to wash your dreads? I just got mine today and the loctician who did them told me that I could, but I've seen it listed as a no-no on internet blogs. Thoughts?
How do I put the loose hair back in my dread after their first wash?
How often do you have to wash your dreads?
i have a question im trying something out i put a bowl full of water with sea salt and then i get the dreadlocks wet in that bowl and wash it out is that also good for dreadlocks because then i could probobly never get residue...and can residue stop the dreads from locking i have my dreads for about 4 months now and one more question lol on my roots i feel as if the dreadlocks get tighter and i also think i got residue there is that the residue that hardend or is it just my dreadlocks older?
i have two strand twist how do i stop them from coming loose when it being wash? #help!
bro what about the beginner's plzzxzz reply. do hair's fall's in the beginning....
Will the dreads slightly loosen up everytime they come in Contact with water?
Felt like I was actually in a shower for a sec haha.
5/7 days should be more than enough time for them to settle and be ready to be washed. You're going to want to be more gentle with them than I am with mine and you might want to squeeze each dread individually when rinsing and drying rather than squeeze many like I do. Young dreads should be fine with gentle towel and air drying. The blow dryer is more for older dreads that are harder to get dry. They'll be messy after their first wash but this is normal.
