How To Wash Dreadlocks!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

One of the most common dreadlock misconceptions is that they can't be washed, shouldn't be washed or are difficult to wash, In this video I demonstrate how I wash my hair, in the shower, much like I would with any other hair :)

I often get asked about washing dreadlocks, whether you can and how, so...
How to wash dreadlocks... I'm going to go through the things I do for washing my hair. Then I'm going to do it! Showering on the internet. If you have any questions regarding the washing and drying of dreads feel free to drop me a comment here or on the blog!
My Washing Routine
I wash my dreadlocks in the shower and I would fully recommend washing in the shower over washing in the tub. The higher the water pressure you have, the better! Power shower? excellent. Washing with a high pressured shower means you can wash your dreadlocks thoroughly and faster, it also means you're more able to wash out the excess soap.
Get in the shower and soak the dreadlocks completely. If you have a weak shower it might take some time as the dreadlocks can hold a lot of water, depending on how long and/or thick they are.
You can then apply the soap / shampoo if you're going to use it. I only use a little over a teaspoon of soap for head.
I will apply the shampoo directly to my scalp. I will scrub it all over my head and the dreads will act like a scrubbing brush, moving it all around. You don't need to apply soap to the dreads themselves as the soap/shampoo will rinse from your head, through the locks.
After that I wash the rest of my body, leaving my head under the shower, giving the dreadlocks as long as possible with water running through them as you really want to make sure all the shampoo rinses out.
Make sure you scrub behind your ears and on your neck, these areas can get oiler than normal because the dreadlocks can keep your head warmer than normal hair - like wearing a hat.
After I'm done washing the rest of my body I return to my head, spraying it with the shower on a high setting, rinsing out the soap.
I will then squeeze water out of the dreadlocks, they don't have to be squeezed one by one, but I make sure I squeeze the water out of all of them.
After one last soak I will turn the water off.
While remaining in the shower I squeeze out as much excess water as I can. The more you can squeeze out, the better. Also the squeezing is a passive way of maintaining your dreadlocks and encouraging them to mature.

Do you use any type of natural conditioner like coconut oil? I would think with just washing dreads with shampoo would dry the dreads out and eventually cause drying of the scalp and dreads causing them to break off in weak damaged areas

I deep clean my hair every couple of months with apple cider vinegar, rosemary oil, tea tree oil, lavender oil. I have never done anything other than that and *fingers crossed* nearly 7 years in, I've never had a lock break.

Ok, well the Rosemary, tea tree and lavender oil is like a conditioner. So you've answered my questions. Apple cider vinegar is an great alternative cleanser. It doesn't strip the natural oils rather just kind of dissolves the dirt then wash out :) so, being a dread head, what type of lifestyle do you live? Do you have a video like that? Kind of like opening up about your dread journey and if it was associated with just wanting them or the deeper reason?

I do not live a particular alternate or interesting lifestyle, I'm just an undergrad student - I eat, sleep, study and make videos ^^ My dreadlock tag videos go into a little bit of why I originally wanted to start them, but the reasons differ now for why I continue to have them. If I was to start over now I would also go freeform.

Just started watching your dread videos and I must say....thank you! Thank for simple common sense videos explaining methods. I've even had hair stylists tell me things I thought didn't make much common sense. Also, not many people have good clean looking dreads to model after but yours seem great. Once again, thank you. I'm just starting mine so this has been very helpful.

Well there are some upsides to them being short! Less washing and drying time and there's less hair to shrink up so you get fewer loops and lumps! They'll settle down after you've slept on them for a while, failing that they should soften after you start to wash them. It doesn't take much / any work to get them like mine, just lots of patience / forgetting they exist =] Have fun with your journey!

Thank you so much for your informative videos. I got dreads from the salon a week ago. She did the knot at the scalp, then crochet and blunt them at the bottom. I have exactly 36 dreads. My hair was down to my thighs, and straight, and not its about waste length. I'm excited for my dread journey. I will wash my hair every saturday, and also use the sea salt solution. My babe dreads are super tight right now, and I'm scared to wash them, but I'll be super careful with them. Your dreads are awesome and thank you again!

  • @LazyDreads
    @LazyDreads11 жыл бұрын

You have to wait for it to lock up! It's possible to use a crochet hook to pull it back in, but with young dreads you'll find it just falls back out again when you wash next. It's completely normal and to be expected that young dreadlocks are going to be messy and frizzy. They take months to mature and then once they've matured they will lock up the loose hairs by themselves. If you try and force them to be neater it will take longer for them to mature.

I waited a month or so b4 washing w African black soup liquid. But my locks are bleached and the extra oil from my head seemed to help w/o any scalp irration. I recommend not getting them wet every time ya shower too. That's what dries out your scalp bc they do take along time to fully dry. Keep up the good work Lazy!

Having previously been a hairstylist, I can tell you that even without dreadlocks it is very rarely necessary to wash the entire length of your hair. Unless you have extraordinarily oily hair/scalp then washing the scalp is enough. Some shampoo or soap will naturally make it's way down the length of the hair shaft as you clean the scalp and that is usually sufficient. To actively scrub the hair shaft only serves to damage it.

I find after I follow your process, a second washing is needed to concentrate on sectioning off hair in 4 parts. Then I scrub down the entire length of my locks. This is especially necessary to remove cigarette aromas. Also, although I use shampoo regularly (2-3x week), incorporating a monthly saltwater washing works wonders.

You might not want to be quite so harsh, mine are like rope and I like to give them a good scrubbing. Friction is also good for the dreads and any loose hairs that get knocked out will quickly start to lock up again on their own. I find that the tougher I treat them, the tougher they get.

Sorry if I missed you discuss this already - but how soon is it safe to wash your hair for the first time after getting baby dreads? I know you need to be extra careful with them while they're new, is there anything in particular you should do? - or avoid? Should they be blow-dried? Squeezed with a towel after I assume is ok? So for so many questions.

Well I don't leave the house much either! Although that's not through illness, it's just... well. Anyhow, big beanies are awesome and especially when you have young kinda mad dreads that you need to control / cover up. The friction from the hat also helps make loose hairs get a little frizzy and therefore become more likely to knot up!

They can be washed as often as you like. But usually once every 2-3 days because they take longer to wash and dry than normal hair and therefore it's not normal to wash them every day. Of course you can still shower every day while keeping your hair dry.

Hey bro I've got 3 months of back comb and now neglect dreads. It looks like you're a lil harsh with your locks when you're washing your scalp. Since mine are even close to being as locked up as yours , is it okay to be that harsh with my scalp too? Because right now I use a baking soda rinse and just use my fingertips to rub around each base of each dread

Can you use Dr. Bronner's to wash your dreads? I just got mine today and the loctician who did them told me that I could, but I've seen it listed as a no-no on internet blogs. Thoughts?

5/7 days should be more than enough time for them to settle and be ready to be washed. You're going to want to be more gentle with them than I am with mine and you might want to squeeze each dread individually when rinsing and drying rather than squeeze many like I do. Young dreads should be fine with gentle towel and air drying. The blow dryer is more for older dreads that are harder to get dry. They'll be messy after their first wash but this is normal.
