How to warm up a 2 stroke dirt bike motor and not foul your plug

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you are having problems with fouling spark plugs on your 2 stroke, you need to watch this video. We certainly need to make sure that your bike/carb/EFI is working properly and delivering the correct amount of fuel into the motor. That is obvisouly very important. But even with a tuned carb or EFI system, many people create problems for themselves by letting the bike idle too long as they would a 4 stroke motor. Lets take a look here!

    I agree for premix but for TPI the oil pump controls how much oil flows into the throttle body. So the more you rev it, the more oil you are putting into the system. The TPI manuals say to not touch the throttle and that's what I do. I idle for about 5-10 minutes (depending on ambient temp) until the radiators get warm and I never touch the throttle. I have never fouled a plug, have never gummed up anything, and have never had silencer spooge either. If people are fouling their TPI, I think there are bigger issues at play. Could be the crank-case sensor, ECU, or maybe even the oil pump causing excessive oil issues.

    Never owned a TPI but on carbureted bikes the pilot jet affects idle to 1/8 throttle if you have the proper pilot jet you can idle the bike all day long and not fowl plugs. I run redline oil in a 250 two stroke and the power valves do not gum up and the the top of the piston does not have carbon build up even after two or three years of riding without a rebuild. The needle affects mid RPM range and the main jet affects middle to wide open rpm. Learn to adjust your carburetor. Learn to read your spark plug. A properly tuned bike will be a pleasure and a blessing to ride. An improperly tuned bike will ruin your day. Let the engine idle While putting on your gear. When the cylinder is warm to the touch then you can start giving it some throttle. Put around for a couple of minutes and when the cylinder temp come up the bike will clean up and stop blubbering then you can start giving it more gas and putting more of a load on it. Listen and feel your bike it will tell you when its ready for wide open throttle. Don't revv your engine on a cold cylinder. The piston will change shape as it warms up. When it's cold it is not perfectly shaped to the cylinder and you will have high and low spots on the piston potentially causing premature wear and scuffing. It needs to be hot before you can go wide open throttle. Another tip... Grease your air cleaner lip for better sealing. It makes a difference.

    Agreed fire up on choke as recommended and then knock choke off at the point it will idle without it. Usually less than a minute. A couple of more minutes idling and then low throttle riding till the rads are hot. One thing to keep in mind is outside temperature. If it’s below 5 Celsius slow cruising type riding can slow the warm up process quite dramatically with cold air going through the rads. So slow manoeuvring with the engine getting some small amounts of load and minimal air flow works best. I did some tests on engine temperature a couple of years ago with diagnostics connected on my TPi. With the outside temp being 5 Celsius I got my bike to operating temp 91 Celsius when the fan kicked in. I then road for half a mile going through the gears up to 50mph watching the engine temp on the phone located on the handlebars. The engine temp dropped 28 degrees taking it back into the semi warm status. I then covered the left side rad with a piece of cardboard to reduce air flow on one side. The result being a better continued operating temperature during those longer periods of fast riding. In the slow stuff the fan kicked in and did it’s job keeping the engine in the sweet spot. Keeping the engine coolant temperature in the zone near to fan operation is where the engine is most efficient and engine wear/friction is at a minimum with a good burn at the plug. Also warm up can be longer if the thermostat has been deleted. Always wise to run a thermostat in winter if road riding or fast flowing trails. Another thing these new TBi bikes being premix and will oil up if idling a long time. The older TPi not as much. Common sense prevailing people will do there own thing. Some just don’t understand or appreciate what is required to keep a bike at its best. The tales of woe I’ve seen with engine failure and it’s all been preventable. Good work Kyle 👍🏻

    As a mechanic, this is a certified way to blow a tpi up. Those bikes take a super long time to warm up. Its important to let them idle to temp. Any ktm mechanic will tell you that. If you're fouling at idle you're running too rich or too much oil. I've seen so many hairline cracked cylinder walls because people don't let their bike warm up before revving it. I live in michigan where it gets much coldr and people ride in snow, so I see it all the time. Over time it'll lead to complete loss of compression. Very bad advice

All the people I see riding them and all the people on here have said you have to let a TPI idle till it warms up on the left radiator, then shut it off, and restart it and that’s the proper way to warm up a tpi. Before I knew that I fouled a couple of plugs, but since I’ve been letting it idle this way till it warms up, I’ve not fouled one. So I guess I’m wondering why you don’t do this to your tpi bikes?

    Fouling a plug has nothing to do with idling. It is about improper jetting, bad mechanical condition, improper heat range plug, and/or leaving the choke on too long. I have never fouled a plug letting my old carburetor equipped 2T's idle to warm up. That includes old KDX's, GasGas', and even my Yamaha RD's from the 70's. Also, I don't ever use special plugs. Good old NGK BR8ES plugs do the job and I change them out once a year only because I feel I'm supposed to.

    Why old 2t recommended to warm up with periodical reving? I thought it is because of "oil starvation" on idle and you add "healthy" amount by opening throttle. Not related with plug. But seems some people think this method was to prevent plug foul.

    It wasn't the oil. Too much fuel going through it and the plug couldn't get hot enough to burn properly. Mystery solved. If it was leaned out (less fuel/oil going through the carb) and warmed up more quickly like I'm talking about in this video, you'd not be fouling plugs.

    I don't know what the other Katoom's have for premix ratio, but my 300sx calls for 60:1. It is hard for me to imagine that low of a gas:oil ratio fouling plugs, but I admit I don't know much about the new e-start fuel injected KTM 2 stroke machines. I also have a YZ250 with less than one hour on the bike that Yamaha calls for a 15:1 break in premix ratio. That thing runs like crap and fouls plugs like a mother, which is not hard to imagine why. Once the YZ hits 1 hour I'm considering it broke in and will be switching to a 30:1 ratio. I'll still have to worry about fouling plugs but hopefully it'll be somewhat better at least.

    the bike in the video is TBI. he’s done videos on how to warm up a TPI. they’re very different. The owners manual also clearly states what to do for either bike. if you’re in the comments complaining and can’t handle basic care for a dirtbike, then don’t ride. buy a skateboard or you can get a quad or some other beginner machine to learn on. these just aren’t for you!

  • @justinnichols650
    @justinnichols650 Жыл бұрын

    Does anyone know how TBI's and TPI's differ as far as the choke or "cold start" switch procedure from manufacturer? I have been warming up my TPI's by pulling the "choke" out and letting it "high idle" for 3-5 minutes on cold mornings, less on warm days. Apparently this longer idle time gives the computer time to gather data about the specific riding conditions you are in at the moment (ambient temperature, elevation, engine temperature, etc.) And it will not foul because it is a "high idle" AND it won't seize because the computer is giving the cylinder enough oil because it knows. Then I do what Kyle suggests which is some balance drills with some 1/4-1/2 throttle blips every once in a while. Then when I take off I do 2 minutes of moderate riding until I feel like it is warmed up. Carbed bikes need a method more similar to what DBC video explained. Start it with choke, let it high idle until it starts to bog or until it will idle ok with choke off, turn choke off, let it idle for a 30 seconds or so, then start lightly blipping if it starts to rough idle (every bike behaves a little differently). I did this with my 2007 CR250 as well as my 2012 250XC, never fouled plugs or blew top ends and cylinders were always in immaculate condition when doing top ends. Kyle is 100% right that letting a carbed bike or incorrectly adjusted FI bike low idle for too long can easily foul a plug. I see it happen to my friends all the time. Long story short, listen to your 2 stroke, it will tell you what it is doing. But I would air on the side of longer warm up process for sure. My buddy blew his 2018 TX300 the other day because he warmed it up for only 2 minutes and then put it under full load climbing a long sandy hill.

I haven't heard of anyone fouling plugs on mondernish two strokes, but agree it doesn't do any good to let it sit idling, it's not going to get warmed up enough just sitting there at idle so why waste that precious premix?

    That’s ridiculous, warm it up for a few minutes & off you go. Touch the radiator to see if she’s warm. Fair enough though dude, if you’ve got your method & it works, cool bananas 🍌. 10 minutes sounds extreme to me though, sometimes bikes seize for no ambiguous reason at all, it happens, your 10 minutes does not prevent that. I know some of my mates don’t even run in their bikes, ( I do though, & I recommend it ), but theirs last as long as my run in bike. Get your head around that!

    Slight difference with warm up on a carbureted and EFI 2 stroke. On either one Power valves and silencer packing have zero effect on fouling plugs or warming up a 2 stroke. Carbs have a choke or enrichener. You pull that, start the bike, the bike will idle at a high RPM, let it idle until the idle raises higher, then return it to the release position which will go back to normal idle. It will take between 30 seconds and 1 minute depending on outside temperature. Voila, engine is warmed up. With EFI bikes you have to blip the throttle to get the RPMs up so you don't foul the spark plug on start up. Do that off and on for 30 seconds or so then go ride.
