A friend of mine had overlooked renewing her license for long enough that she had to take a road test to get a license so she could rent a car. Since she didn't have a running car (hence the rental) I took her for the exam in my brand-new Crosstrek six-speed. She had no problem taking the test the first time she drve the car. The license examiner, on he other hand, had never seen a manual, denied even knowing that manuals exist, so my friend had to explain the clutch and shifting to the examiner as she took the exam.

Great tips! Another tip I'd add is to never use excessive force on the shifter. You shouldn't need much force to get it into gear. If it isn't going into gear easily, stop and try again. If you don't have the shifter lined up properly for the gear you are trying to select, you aren't pushing the clutch enough, something is wrong with the clutch or transmission, etc, all trying to force it will do is risk causing serious damage to the shifter, cables, transmission, etc. I have known people who bent shift forks, broke shifters, etc by being way too rough.

@@tumbili5375 Generally, if the transmission is grinding when shifting, the clutch either isn't disengaging fully or the synchronizers are worn out. Changing the transmission fluid might help too. If your 2nd gear synchro is worn, you should be able to shift to 2nd gear with no grinding by double clutching as long as everything else is okay. This guy has an excellent video on double clutching that I'd suggest you watch. It takes a bit of practice to get right, but mastering the skill might prevent you from having to rebuild the transmission.

Oh yes good shout! Sometimes it inexplicably gets 'jammed' going into a gear, that's a mechanical fault not a 'you' fault so back into neutral and try again. Even on a test it's just a driving fault at best, so keep calm and stay focused!

A useful tip for first and second gears (in a right-hand drive car) is the so-called “palming” technique. This is where you rotate your left wrist 180° so the palm of your left hand is facing away from your legs. When you change into first or second gear this way your palm acts as a barrier against the gear lever accidentally springing back into neutral.

After getting my license almost 10 years ago and exclusively driving automatic cars I made the decision last month to switch to manual as my daily driver. My family thought I was nuts and were convinced I'd be back at the dealership to trade it in within a few days. Yes the first week or so was... rough and jerky but I stuck with it and now I love my car and love driving again, my commute is no longer something I dread but almost like therapy. So much good information in these videos that made my learning experience much much better than if I'd have just done a couple hour lesson for the basics and figured out the rest myself.

I had a pretty disasterous lesson yesterday, constantly going into 5th gear instead of 3rd. All because I was trying to move gears in one flow of the wrist, by playing 'guess the gear' position. It made me lose concentration & confidence on the rest of the driving, and made it really hard to control the car. I've been following this channel since I started learning, so looked for a gearstick video. I did another lesson today applying Richard's technique, and at the end of the lesson the instructor actually allowed me to drive home on the main roads for the first time, which is massive progress for me. I only went into 5th instead of 3rd accidentally once - but instead of panicking like I did yesterday, I quickly fixed it myself and the car was fine. Honestly Richard you are a god send!! This channel is helping me so much THANK YOU

Someone taught me to "laterally preload" the shifter which helps when shifting from 3-2 and from 4-5 and when skipping from 4-6. Essentially, if you want to go from 4-5, put pressure towards the right on the shifter, then put pressure upwards and as soon as it can go right, it will go right and then finish going up into 5th. The same works for 3-2 (but with left pressure) and 4-6 (4-6 is just annoying but the lateral preload trick helps). This little tricks helps _a ton_ when your 4th and 5th gear are close together in ratio and it makes it so much easier to time your clutch release so you don't jerk the car on the shift.

Like how a sporty shifter will feel going into gears versus a suv or old car with a worn shifter? I've only driven my subaru brz in manual and it feels gritty or notchy sometimes and people tell me that's normal... would love your opinion on the matter and im sure it would help new drivers gain confidence on if their shifter may have an issue or is intended to feel the way it does. It may sound weird but if you are not paying attention to the way you hold the gear stick, you may put it from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th. My car's steering wheel is on the left so I obviously use my right hand to move the gear stick and when I made the same mistake (from 3rd to 2nd) twice in a matter of like 10 minutes I actually had to stop the car and check why that "money shift" kept happening. What I noticed was when my palm was facing towards the left, the gearstick would easily go from 3rd to 2nd rather than 4th. To fix that you obviously have 2 options: either place the palm on top of the gearstick or your palm has to face towards the right. That gearbox was damn unhappy about the money shifts but once I fixed the problem it was happy again (hehe).

Thank you for your videos, i have a question. I noticed that i have adopted a habit to not press the clutch completely down when shifting gears, i press it about 1/3 between 2nd and 3rd gear , there is no grinding and i am at 1000 is RPM (diesel engine) is that bad for the gears clutch and so on

  • @ConquerDriving

    @ConquerDriving

It's more risky but as long as the clutch if far enough down to disengage it, the gearbox should be fine.

I imagine you could test if this puts any load on your gearbox by coming to a complete stop in a flat area, then putting the car in 1st but only hold the clutch down as much as you do when shifting 2nd to 3rd. Hold the clutch in this position while the car is in first gear. If the car starts to roll forward when you do this (assuming that your foot is off the brake and the handbrake is off) then it is putting extra strain and wear on the gearbox (mainly the synchronizers, I would guess). Of course, I would make sure the car doesn't roll when it's in neutral to double check that the ground is flat.

I know that if you driving on a highway, you have to see the full car in your side mirror before you change lanes, but I don't know how to change lanes on a way slow traffic like say between 1 and 20 km/h traffic I also don't know how to enter into the road from a parked position if the traffic is heavy and the space between the cars is not up to say 3ft. Please help me

Maybe worth mentioning that you can do the side-to-side movement as fast as you like, but for forwards and backwards (up and down) try to have some mechanical sympathy and rather than slamming it into gear, apply some pressure and let the synchos do their magic. Kind of hard to demonstrate when parked.

I think an important reminder for beginners is to not do what they see everyone else does. It's ridiculously easy to glide through the gear changes once you have experience, but it also looks deceptive to the untrained eye and hides a lot of the mechanics that you've covered. I'm not moving the gear stick, I'm simply suggesting to it that it may prefer to sit somewhere else.

I respect your opinion on this, but I have to disagree. The method I've talked about in my previous comment (the one where you linked this video) seems to remove the variable of gripping tight the stick while going from first to second. Use the same technique as going from 5th to 6th but with the palm in the opposite orientation will ensure that you never miss second. Instead of actually having to think wether you should use more or less grip or worry about slipping into 3rd, the pupil will be more confident without having to think about something extra in a tight situation. The same principle applies when going down to 2nd from 3rd, where applying pressure with the palm rotated towards the passenger while pulling the stick, ensures you never miss 2nd.

Gears getting stack was my biggest problem I have a Toyota yaris and I have read gear change from 2 to 1 actually can be a problem. Its annoying as I passed in August this year and all the instructors cars very so easy to drive but when I got mine 1L it was a different story. I have to give a lot of gas for the car to move off even on the slightest hill. But actual hills are the worse nightmare for me. I hate it with my car. But the difficulty in shifting to 1st gear is on roundabout. For me to go into 1st, my car has to be nearly stopped or otherwise it will block the gear stick and not let me shift. If I stay on second sometimes the car moves off to slow. I feel like I'm fighting with the car sometimes especially when I'm tired. There must be something I could be doing better.

I have a question about shifting that wasn't addressed in this video. When upshifting from gear 2 into 3, I've been doing exactly as you describe here. That is, popping the stick out of gear 2, letting the stick center itself, then pushing it up into 3. However, a problem I very frequently encounter is that this causes the rpm's in my car drop quickly (note: my car has a 2.0 liter gasoline, naturally aspirated engine). It takes extra time to shift from gear 2 to 3 because I have to wait an extra second for the stick to center itself before pushing up. This delay causes the rpm's to drop. So, as a result, I frequently have trouble getting a smooth shift from gear 2 into 3. I feel a kick/bump from my car. This isn't a problem when, say, shifting from 1 to 2 or 3 to 4, because the stick gets moved in a straight, vertical line. How can I upshift from gear 2 to 3 smoothly? Do you have any suggestions on how to counter the drop in rpm? Thanks!

That kind of change was most obvious in a BRZ and now I start to have the same feeling in my Jetta. Why a full tank of gas could get the gearbox "lubricated" and make it so enjoyable to shift?
