SUMMARY:
- Every now and then you just have to overtake another car on a narrow two-lane road to get to your destination faster. Whenever you feel like you don’t have enough time to end it, turn back to your lane and not the side of the road.
- Whenever the frost is coming, remove the wiper blades overnight and they won’t freeze to the glass. And finally, never ever run the wipers on a dry windshield. They are meant to be used on a wet surface.
- Imagine it's a hot summer day, you get in the car that's been in the sun for hours. But the AC system accumulates toxic substances you don't want to breath in. So pump out the hot air naturally before you get in the car.
- If you live in climate where seasons do change and winters are snowy and cold, you most likely only use you AC in the summer. If you make it sleep all winter long, you might not be able to turn it back on in the summer. The same is true for the heater, you have to turn it on at least for 30 seconds even in the summer months.
- When it's below 14 °F outside and you get in your vehicle, don't try to start it straight away. Before you start it, turn on the high beams for 3 to 5 seconds. It will let you run the current through your system and help the engine start easier.
- In case you get stuck in mud, sand or snow, don’t panic and remember there’s always a way to get out. Deflate the tires letting out about half of the air from them to increase their surface area.
- When you're driving along a narrow road, and there is a flow of cars going your way, pay attention to their wheels. If you feel like the driver is acting weirdly don't wait for them to flash the turn signals.
- It’s really smart to keep the remote control apart from the rest of your keys and always keep it in your pocket. Also, don’t activate the Anti Theft mode just for fun.
- It's pretty obvious that you have to keep your windshield clean, but there are some things you might oversee in this process. You side car windows have rubber molding that you most likely forget to clean.

You know, I'm a member of a DIY car repair shop. Plenty of car guys who claims to know everything about cars and anything else in the universe. Sure they know something but that is heavenly exaggerated and you simply can't rely on it. The best thing is still to study repair procedures in workshop manuals specific for your vehicle.

There are more important things to advise. For example - always pay attention to your tires, always select tires based on the weather conditions/season, and replace them, when needed. The tires are often not considered a priority by many drivers, but at the end they are the only thing between the car and the road surface. The only point of contact. You want this contact to be as stable, as possible with perfect traction. Losing traction is equal to losing control of the vehicle on the road.

I was waiting for the most important, it never came. Most, but not all passenger compartment heaters operate on hot engine coolant, only rarely are they electrical. So what you have in the dash is another back-up radiator. If you're stuck in stop and go traffic, and your car starts overheating (or anytime it's overheating), even if it's really hot outside, turn off the AC, open all the windows, and turn your heater on to full. I've seen this simple, if not comfortable trick lower engine temp to safe levels in minutes.

If you're stuck in snow, sometimes rubber mats under your legs can help you - put it under the skipping tires (and don't forget on the road later). You can detach your wiper blade and use it for cleaning windows. For really cold winters, when temperature drops below 0 F or even more, and you have a time, grab your battery at home and keep it in normal or slightly warm temperature - it helps you to start engine at morning (of course, if your car stay outside, not in garage)

Having a degree in electrical engineering and having some experience with car electrical systems and batteries, I can tell you advice #5 is no advice at all! It may be a good idea to set your car to acc. for a few seconds before starting a car as this precharges a few large capacitors in the electrical system before sending those few hundreds of amps to the starter. Turning the high beams on is a total NONO if your battery is aging. This might even put you in a situation where you need a car boosting.

For rule 6, I always leave the AC on no matter what time of year it is. It cools air in the summer but dehumidifies the air in the rain and snow. Keeps fog off your windows. I always leave the air speed maxed out and just adjust the temperature and which vents it's coming out as I go. In summer I open the windows while the system runs to start the cooling process but also have fresh air. In the winter I'll turn the air speed down to a crawl until I get heat this way there's at least enough air flow on the windshield that my breath doesn't fog it. I've owned several cars and never have I had to replace any AC stuff.

Almost all newer cars in Europe have the compressor and fluid to seal holes in tires instead of a spare and jack. Same as the advice of going front and back real fast… as far as I know, in Europe we mostly drive shifters instead of automatics, even though people are preferring them more now, most of our countries teach shifters first. How TF do you want to go back and forth fast if you have to press the clutch, wait for everything to stop moving in your transmission and reverse so you don’t damage your full transmission? 😂

The overtaking tip is downright dangerous! For a start, keep back from vehicles you wish to overtake in order to get a better view of what's ahead (in fact, always keep a safe distance behind vehicles in front)! Next, move across to the other side of the road when wishing to overtake, and this manoeuvre should still leave you behind the vehicle you're about to overtake, so you can move back to your original place if you notice a hazard you hadn't spotted before. Once you see the way ahead clear, then accelerate past the vehicles. As always, always indicate before making any move!

Added late: It always is advised to cancel the overtaking by just hitting on your break. That's the quickest way to get behind the car to overtake, so you can again occupy the space you just left. Of course that requires other drivers also overtaking not touching your rear bumper.

You should turn the key to the on position for a few seconds before starting, but the high beam thing is incorrect. Going to the on position, wakes up the alternator and the whole electrical system, so they can work smoothly together. That is actually true.

When bringing a car to a mechanic, tell him what it is doing wrong, not what part you think is bad. For example, don't tell him the starter is bad, if sometimes it won't start. He may go ahead and change the starter when the real problem is the battery.

While moving at high speeds for a long time, your brain may adapt to the speed, making you lose the sense of it. Have a look at your speedometer, also it's useful to sometimes slow down and blink a couple of times, especially if you're going to turn because your brain thinks you're going slower than you actually do. If you cannot start your car in the cold, don't overstrain your starter - it might break. Also, if you can't start the car and still trying to do it for like 10+ times, you may just fill your spark plugs with gasoline and have problems with starting later on. NEVER defrost your car doors/locks with hot water - it will freeze and jam your locks and damage the paint. There are special fluids for that, or you could use simple isopropyl acohol. If you are just starting to overtake several cars and see that you won't make it in time, it's better to turn on the blinker, slow down and get back behind the cars you were overtaking rather than try to speed up and finish the overtake.

Try mixing a little bit of shampoo or car soap in the windshield washer water. If you happen to live in climates where it accumulates condensation outside the windshield, a spray from the washer will leave a layer of soap on it. Which will change the surface tension of water accumulated and your windshield won't fog up easy.

In most newer cars, the a/c compressor runs in defrost mode. To cool the car cabin down quicker, run the a/c in outside mode (no recirculate) with the front windows down for a few minutes. This will force most of the really hot air out of the car. Then close the windows and turn on recirculate mode (max a/c). And if you want to save your automatic transmission, never shift into drive or reverse while the car is moving.
