Got it, after trying with an old router for years. The secret for me was to change the IP of the router first with DHCP on, then save it, go back in and disable the DHCP server. Trying to switch off the DHCP first in my router hid all the router ip settings. Sneaky ISP trying to lock down their gear. Hopefully this helps someone!

Someone else (thank you Ryan!) earlier made this observation BUT IT IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT. On some old routers, the FIRST STEP ought to be to change the IP address of the old router, THEN log in to this NEW IP address, THEN complete the setup including the deactivation of DHCP. My old Actiontec 1000a would not allow changing the IP address if DHCP was deactivated.

DHCP !!! That's what I needed to change ! Man, I keep getting back to this video because it's just well made. My current setup is like this: 1st router that's connected to the landline or whatever and get access to the internet first. 2nd router connected with a long cable to my room. 3rd router that is in my sibling's room and is connected to 2nd router with a cable. I JUST set up the 3rd router for some specific reasons but it created some problems. Like, on my 2nd router, all 4 ethernet ports were occupied: 1. cable coming from 1st router 2. My PC 3. cable going to 3rd router 4. Xbox One For some reason, if I had all 3 of them connected, 1 of them would not have access to the internet even though it said they were connected and had no other problems. If I changed the order at when I plugged in each cable, a different device would lose access to the internet. I even changed that router to a different old 4th router but nothing. I knew I had missed a step so I came back here to find the solution and it was to disable the DHCP !!!

Thanks so much for this video! It saved us money by allowing us to make an old "EE Smart Hub" into a repeater. I can now get a great connection anywhere in the flat. The only downside that ive found is that when I change the IP address, I can no longer access the second router settings. My only workaround for this, was to make changing the IP the very LAST thing I did before saving my changes. Now it works, I just have to pray that I don't need to reconfigure anything soon. :D

Weird isn't it, but hey, you do you boss, I'm sure you have your reason for disliking mac products... even if the reason is "I don't have an actual need for a computer as a production device so macs are bad." And just to clarify, I earn my money on a Mac, and I play my games on my Alienware. I would use the Alienware for everything if I could... but as I said earlier... the people that use Macs for a living already know the next part.

Powerline adapters don't typically work well enough for this to be effective. I would use a MoCA 2.5 setup to use existing coaxial cables as ethernet alternative. Can get basically the same speed as ethernet, anywhere in your house. Other videos show how to set this up. I'm about to do it myself.

If you can run a long cable between two floors might as well use a switch and hard wire everything.
