How To Turn A Mora Knife Into A Proper Bushcraft Knife / DIY / Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This was a 511 carbon Morakniv that I love to use. I decided on a whim to put a set of walnut scales on using what I had available in the shop.
Not a planned video whatsoever but I hope you enjoy it and possibly helps someone out there tackle the project.
Just be sensible and take your time.

Good, accessible tutorial. If you abrade the tang and the inside surface of your scales with 80 grit sandpaper, then clean with acetone b/f glue-up you will achieve a better bond. Just a small tip from a knife maker. It turned out great man! Nicely done, and an improvement over the factory handle.

thank you for sharing your video, I really like your handle shape. I had a question do you think it is worth the trouble of not having the 'stick tang' bearing on that weak spot where your two "scales" meet and instead, setting the blade in a solid block of walnut? Using a drill press to make a pilot hole in the center of the block, running lengthwise down the block of wood. Then using small files to remove enough wood to fix the blade into the block of walnut with epoxy. Yes, more labor intensive, but would the handle be stronger? Or is the epoxy in the method you use here to mate the two separate just as strong.

Might do something similar with an older style Mora Classic No#2. Like the blade, dislike the painted slippery handle and sheath. Fine for around a workshop, not so good in the outdoors. I'm starting on a Helle Viking blade blank so might as well get the stuff needed for the Classic at the same time. I enjoyed that you did your handle exactly the way you wanted it and not necessarily to a traditional design or style.

How do you define what is "proper" bushcraft knife consists of? It can be many things to different people. For instance the Nepaleze use the kukri as their ideal bushcraft knife. In the U.S. for almost 200 years the Bowie knife in it's various forms has been the bushcraft knife of choice. In many places it's the Bolo in different forms that is their bushcraft knife of choice. So I think a "proper" one depends on where you are and the surrounding conditions.
