How To Treat Acne Scarring (2024)

Acne scarring is an incredibly common and frustrating problem amongst patients I see in my dermatology clinic. In this video, I talk about the most evidence based ways to cure acne scars. We discuss acne scar prevention, how acne scars are formed, microneedling, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and also creams to treat acne scars.

As a 30 year old woman, acne scarring has truly changed my quality of life for the worst. I don’t date, I don’t go out much, and I feel very self conscious. It sucks when im in the car and sun is shining and it highlights the scars. I’ve been suffering for over 10 years. It’s hard to deal with. I went to a aesthetician and received a chemical peel, but they gave me the wrong one and that did nothing for my face. Between the depression, self consciousness, and I feel like I can’t live a full life because of the scars on my face.

Initially I did it every month (if not maybe every 2 weeks, I am not sure). This helped especially against the Acne. But the effect is very lasting, so currently every 3-4 months is sufficient for me. This is also due to "condition" having goten better. So now I do for the scarring. I found that the laser worked better than the needling. Although; the needling worked best at a higher intensity with a deeper piercing (deeper piercing will hurt more though). I can't tell you much about the laser. I only know what my doc cals them. There are some that help better against acne, some better against scarring. Laser-vampire-needling is not recommended by me though. All in all i wish my previous doc didnt keep his mout shut and told me about this. It was my best life decision yet. Truly life changing for me. Pls remember the experience may vary.

I challenged my insurance when they refused to cover my treatment and the person I spoke to was very sympathetic and I got it covered. I do have to get recertified every 3 years but so far so good. I went on spironolactone 50mg, Retin-A, azelaic acid from the dermatologist. This worked great but a few years we went to 100mg and kept the others but included a benzoyl peroxide face wash. I still have pretty severe scars. Nothing has worked for me. I do think the medical grade skincare I've been using has made a huge difference in texture. Ultimately, though, you just kind to have to learn to live with it. I've found that people really aren't that superficial in real life, unless they're young or generally shallow.

Gone through many videos about scarring, what you told is exactly correct as per my past experiences with scar treatment. Informative content, I have an ambiguity whether micro needling reduces or shows impact on fine lines/wrinkles of aging process.

Hi Dr. Usama. Love your content! Can you please make a video for eye care? eye bags and eye circles? There is a lot of garbage about how to get rid of them and nothing scientifically-based. Hence, I am sure your viewers would appreciate one! Thanks!

Try eating mung beans daily. It is a detox food that cools you down. You will start to grow clear skin, which will replace the old, scarred skin. You will see results in weeks.

Thank you for this content. It's so rare and valuable to get accurate and transparent skin care information. It would be amazing if you could do a video on how to reduce hyper-pigmentation from stubborn old spots. I don't have raised tissue but after the active spot is gone i am always left with red/purple marks.

Thank you for being honest. So far i have done stamping 4th treatment at home. I have seen little improvement but will continue. I use 3.0 stamper once a month. My box scars are very old and a very smalk area on my cheeks about 3/4 surface. I use vitam c and ordinary moisturizer with retinoid by Ordinary brand, and hyulornic acid as well. Will continue to do monthy treatments until i get desired smoothness.

APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE TO YOU FOR BEING SO BRUTALLY HONEST ! I have suffered my whole entire life with box scars and indented rolling scars and w/ laser treatments that I have used didnt really help me. Now that I'm 68 yrs. old, I recently had microneedling and I've had 8 sessions which cost me a lot and yet, my scars have only improved about 50 %. I'm thinking of getting more sessions just to hopefully get me a smoother skin. You're right, INSURANCE IS CRAZY FOR NOT HAVING THESE TYPE OF CONDITION BEING COVERED ! I wish I can afford to get a fat transfer and fillers . I also began using some type of Retinol but I know I will have to continue w/ more microneedling. I'm not exctly sure about PRP. I admire your honesty and YOU ARE THE ONLY DOCTOR that I have seen in YOU TUBE that describes reality about acne scars. More power to you !

I went in for a consultation for my acne scars at this one place and the bundle price for 3 treatments for microneedling was $1400. I couldn't afford it, but the lady wanted to help me out so she gave me half off so now I've been going for over a year now and I am going to get my 5th microneedling treatment next month.
