I started watching this channel because I have had such a long history of skin issues. I'm also in NP school and I love when you guys are explaining the WHY and HOW of your recommendations. This channel has great clinical pearls, keep it up!

I love how straightforward and informative you guys are. I love how you break up your videos into sections that we can easily refer to!!

I used Scar Away silicone bandages after a partial thyroid removal. I used those with real aloe vera gel and was very intentional to use it daily, all day for almost a year. I have almost no scar on my throat. I had to fight people who would tell me that I didn't need to wear it so long but I knew I wanted to minimize the scar. Even the doctor who did the surgery was amazed at how little the scar was visible.

How soon after the surgery did you start to use Scar Away? Did you squeeze aloe gel from the plant or did you buy it?

@@dmclassical08 I started using the Scar Away bandages as soon as the stitches came out. I ordered aloe from a woman in California who had generations of older Aloe plants (massive ones) that she sold cuts from. I would order a supply each month and squeeze the gel straight from the cutting and rub it on my scar. I wore the bandages as close to 24 hours a day for close to a year. Changed them every week to a new one. I can't recommend the silicone bandages enough. They were amazing and you literally can't see a scar now. Hope that helps.

@@emilyd.4136 I took mine off each time I showered but reapplied it after. I wore it all day and would remove for a few hours in the evening to apply aloe gel to it for a while. From my reading on it they say for the absolute best outcome, you should wear the silicone bandage as long as you can. I definitely slept with it on all night too. I found that just wiping the silicone side of the bandage with a wet tissue sometimes made it stick again (you just wiped the body oils off it). Hope that helped.

I think keeping it clean is important but just as important is keeping it well moisturized (I highly suggest a natural organic Aloe) but to really minimize the scar as much as possible you have to consistently wear the silicone bandage for quite a while. Remember the skin heals on the surface much quicker than the skin below which can take as long as a year to fully heal (depending on the natural of the scar). Good luck.

Thanks for addressing this. I have post surgical scars (2 months old) that I'm dealing with. I've tried silicone scar tape, which led to some pretty bad inflammation of the area, and has taken several weeks to get under control. Scar gel may be my next choice. Your videos are better, when the two of you are together!

Thank you for sharing this, great info! I had surgery a few years back and was left with scars on my rib cage and microneedling has done wonders to help with the scarring. Since I also suffered with acne scars and have consistently used an at home microneedling stamp, the Banisher 2.0 from Banish, I figured I would try it out on the scars on my side and I'm so glad I did. They have healed so much, and I even apply their Vitamin C Serum after that helps to build collagen. I've seen the scars go down about 60% so far.

Thank you so much for sharing this. Badly placed/sized keloid scars can have so much effect on a persons self-image and desire for connection with others. It’s life-changing to know of the options out there ❤

When we were kids, my best friend fell on a space heater and burned her outer thigh, it was not horrible because the heater was pretty low because it had been turned off but it was enough to cause a dark hatch mark and peel (she has dark brown skin). Her grandma told her to apply a bit of onion juice from a sliced onion on it several times a day. She never got a mark. So the old wives tale remedies can work :)

I have a scar from an acsedent when I was little it left a scar that is just lighter than my skin tone but doesn't tan. It definitely affects my confidence I'm happy I found this video cuz now I know where to go to treat the scar! Thank you so much!

I had a partial thyroidectomy 19 years ago, before that incision was made on a wrinkle or line on the neck. This was back when it looked like you were partially decapitated 🙂. It did turn into a hypertrophic scar and somewhat darker. The scar has never bothered me so I just let it be. Almost 20 years later it’s barely noticeable. It’s lightened almost completely and it did flatten on its own. The ONLY thing I’ve always had a problem with is the sensation on the scar itself still to this day.

Could you please include information for dark skin tones. Specifically Africans. A lot of your examples are tailored for fairer skin. Redness doesn’t show up as red on our skin. Thank you. I love the videos though

A friend & I were discussing Sepsis, which I survived in 2017. A big warning with white skin is loss of pink, skin is abnormally pale. She asked about black skin. I did not know. Blue, grey, noticeably pale. A rash may be present. Test with a jar. The palms may be easier. You will feel increasingly unwell. Everyone needs to be sepsis aware.

This video came out at the perfect time, I underwent a surgery in July, the incision I had has developed into a hypertrophic scar. I visited my derm yesterday and she recommended getting a corticosteroid injection after 6 months. This video has been extremely informative for my scar management journey. Props for making this video 👏👏👏

@@sajenshrestha9061 so I did get the corticosteroid injection as prescribed and it helped tremendously, it has flattened out my keloid and the pigmentation is also gradually fading over time. Additionally my doctor has prescribed using silicone gel (hexilak ultra gel) or silicone sheet aswell as tazarotene 0.05% (tazret gel) to improve the appearance of the scar over time. Please keep in my mind that a surgical /incision scar can not completely vanish. We can only minimize the appearance of it and make it less prominent. I might consider lazer ( if it is an option in my case) maybe a year from now.

@@sajenshrestha9061 also I'd like to mention that if your wound or scar is still fresh (I.e. it's hasn't been a year) any topical treatment that you will use now would be more effective now than a year later when you scar has fully developed and matured. Your scar management strategy should be to try to keep the scar as flat as possible and prevent it from developing into a keloid, in case it starts developing into a hypertrophic scar/ keloid try to get a corticosteroid shot as soon as you can and try to use silicone gel/ or sheet in the meantime. I cannot recommend getting a corticosteroid injection enough, it the best you can do early on in your scar treatment. It also helps with pain, irritation, tugging sensation and itchiness that you might have in the area of your scar/ wound.

So educational, thank you! And your editor has a sense of humour so it’s educational and entertaining to watch!

Omg thank you so much for mentioning and talking about laser treatments!! I found myself a clinic that hsa many different scar reduction options and now I'm going through different laser treatments and chemical peels and sometimes with some dermapen and microneedling action too to get rid of my deep acne scars. Getting done treatmets like fractional resurfacing, IPL, iPRF. It's not cheap but I see results so fast and can't wait to get fully rid of my scars!!

Remember, all wounds heal from the bottom up. You need to keep the wound clean and covered with the dressings that your doctor prefers. You will get wound care instructions when you leave the hospital, outpatient surgical center, or office. Don't deviate. If you think it's healed, it isn't. Keep treating until the skin has healed. I tell my patients to keep the wound treatment up for 3 months after the epidermis appears healed.

used appropriately, Elase ointment (fibrinolysin) and Silvasorb (antimicrobial wound dressing) can aid in healing with minimal scarring by keeping edges of the wound from drying out and forming cicatrice scarring

I have missed you two SO much!! Please do these videos as frequently as possible. There are very few reputable doctors that can be trusted to give honest advice via KZread. Please don't stop!! This video was especially helpful for me. I had an accident 3 weeks ago and have a huge abrasion on my knee cap. I've been keeping Vaseline on it per my doctor. I just purchased the Scar Away sheets and liquid because I remembered you recommending it in a previous video. Thank you both.

I used Mederna back in 2002 after having an antier lumber fusion. My scar was from my belly button all the way to my pubic bone. After using the Moderna, the scar was barely noticeable. My surgeon was amazed. The silicone may work well also, but I was sold on Moderna after it worked so well on that large scar. I love all of your informative videos, keep them coming!!

Thank you. As someone with a self inflected 4 centimeters radius 2nd degree burns who had over 150 stiches for deep wounds during the course of my life, this helps a lot. You are of huge help for people struggling with symptoms of severe mental health ilnesses, because once you come out of the hospital psych ward, you're kind of on your own, because for some people, it's very hard going to see an actual professional who is not a psychiatrist and say "I did this, I did this on purpose". The open wound burn took over 6 months just to close, so I'm not quite there yet, so I am guessing the time window is a bit different for me, but as soon as I notice the wound actually healed and seemed "robust" enough, I'll be moving on from vaseline to silicone sheets. Thank you again.

This couldn't be a more timely find! Thank you so much! I just had an ACDF 2.5 weeks ago so I have a fresh 3-4” scar across the front of my neck. I had been using bacitracin until the stitches came out per my surgeon's orders and now scar tape, so I'm really happy to have the regimen confirmed. Extra delighted because I have EDS so my scars are unpredictable. Years ago I got a huge and very deep Harley bite (tail pipe burn) on my right calf. After the danger of infection was past with a few weeks of silvadene, I applied zinc oxide and a single layer of gauze to keep dirt out of it for about six months. There is literally no scar at all. Nada. I can't discern where the burn was. So I still think zinc oxide is the best treatment, but I do scar tape because everyone tells me to.

From what I know a scar can take up to 1.5 years to really know how it will look. I got a hockey stick to the eyebrow and it was pretty big. I did not go to the doctor because it was done bleeding and did not need stitches. I put antibiotic cream on it until it completely healed and had no scab. It’s about 8 months in and looks significantly better every month. Do you think cream does anything past the point of healing up? I mean sure I can see it getting to the dermis or epidermis, but a scar is like an iceberg when it is from blunt force trauma or a cut.

Thanks so much for this informative video! As a recurring skin-cancer patient this is extremely helpful in verifying my silicone treatments.

What are your thoughts on microneedling the scalp for hair loss + a natural topical (including those you have recommended like pumpkin seed caffeine, rosemary oil and supplementing saw palmetto and curcumin) + aquaphor to lock in oils overnight? The aim is to speed up the microneedling recovery phase and absorption of the topical. Cheers!

Omg this is 100% correct. My bf had a bump removed and staples put in. They said clean with soap and water, apply vaseline and cover for 2 wks bfore staple remvl. After they removed the staples you cant even see where the scar or opening was. The skin sealed soo smoothly together it was beautiful. I never saw anything heal that beautifully lol.

It’s very true!! Vaseline is amazing.. my husband had a skin cancer remove inside the ear and on between his right eye and side of his nose.. the dermatologist doctor told him just use Vaseline and the scar is hardly visible at all

I had surgery that required an incision from in front of my ear down to my neck (as well as a drainage in my neck). The silicone gel was easier to apply, but I switched within a couple of weeks to the silicone sheets that were more effective. I used them for four months. I'm happy with the results. However, I never got the sheets to stick for more than two days. I put a new one on every day after my shower. It also takes practice to figure out how to apply them yourself. Shop around for prices, because some stores charge double the price. I hope this helps someone recovering from surgery.

Thank you for this info. My daughter has a liver disease which causes extreme itching and they are trying to find the right medication and dosage to help her. She has wounds all over her body- I mean an extreme amount. People stare at her if her arms or legs are exposed. She’s 29 and it breaks my heart. She has so many autoimmune diseases and since the age of 15, has had several PEs, a DVT, a HVT, pericarditis and PSC which is what causes the itching. She has so much on her plate that if we could help with this one thing, it would help her self esteem some. I would love some advice to at least help minimize the scars that are several years old, if even just on her arms and legs. Thank you for this info to at least help with new wounds. ❣️

Curious if you ever researched (or tried) wound-honey or manuka honey. I'm not saying it can help something that advanced, but merely letting you know it exists.

I found this video JUST IN TIME! I had a freak accident with a yankee candle and had to get 5 stitches on my finger one month ago to the day. I started using a scar sheet yesterday (have been keeping it in a moist environment with the cerave healing ointment - changed daily) up until yesterday. Looking forward to the advice in this video! Just found y’all’s channel but love it so far!! (EDIT after watching the video: I’m so glad I’ve done the right thing so far! And I’ve already got the scar sheets! Woo!)

I'm thankful for the emergence of young experts here. Before, when I needed to research about skin solutions, there were a few skin doctors who are less likely to recommend an affordable drugstore product. I don't resort to home remedies if I need at least 6 ingredients to mix in a bowl.

My damn!!! As a disabled veteran with plenty of scars, diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma in February of 2022. I now have a 6” scar across my clavicle, 5 surgeries later, the entire time being told to alternate Vaseline and raw vitamin E oil I’m LIVID!!! Now I have to tell people “there was 6 attackers” 🤦🏼‍♀️🤬👎🏼 and at no point was onion anything brought up 🤬🤬🤬 EDIT: I might fly in to see either one of you to please help me unfuck this situation. 🙏🏼

Loved this as I have a number of surgery scars I've collected over the years. You didn't say how best to treat hypertrophic scars though. Would you treat them like normal ones or keloid? I have a rather large one from a laparotomy so would love to know so I could try to improve it.

Love this! I had a laparoscopic surgery mid-May and I used silicane sheets consistently for 2.5+ months for 22-23 hours a day consistently (June, July, & August)... but then I fell off during a birthday trip. For the last couple of months, I still used them but not as consistently. I know I was supposed to use them for AT LEAST three months based on the data, but I lost the habit. I've picked it back up now. Hoping I still have some hope! Unfortunately, one of my scars as a little bleb of hypopigmentation, but it's really the 3 little lines from the insicions that I want to make sure vanish as much as possible. One problem I do have though... is I may have to get another surgery. I wonder if it's safe for them to enter back into the places they did before. If so, I'm doing all this work only to have the scars right back again.

Same here. I may need the same surgery again in the mean time I need to get rid of or minimize the current scars.

@@ebo7310 The silicone sheets really did a great job! I did a lot of research before my surgery to understand the stages of scar healing and followed those to the T for the first 2 weeks after surgery. Then I used the silicone sheets after that. I bought the ones for C-sections and then cut it up into baby strips for my scars (saves so much money). Everyone else sys they're barely there, but (of course) I notice them alot. However, compared to other scares that I've healed on my body, I can say that they absolutely made a diffrence. Still a lot of healing to go though. I decided I'm going to keep using the silicone as long as possible. Sounds like overkill, but I just want to give them every chance to heal nicely. After my second surgery, I'll probably try CO2 lasers.

Such a nice and pleasant surprise with a new video on this boring Sunday evening (Europe). I have also read that at home red light therapy could possibly speed up wound healing. I am trying it out now on a rather deep wound on the knee from a fall with my bicycle. I am of course also using vaseline and band aids ( does anyone know how to get rid of vaseline spots on clothes - they do not wash out in a normal wash?).

Scrape off the Vaseline with a knife, don’t rub off it will just push it into the fabric in farther. You can then use powder to help absorb the oils from it. I use Dawn dishwashing detergent and hot water to get it out. Good luck, hope this helps.

Is there any way to fade or remove scars from cuts and burns through objects? I have quite noticeable self-harm scars that have become a trigger for me and are now associated with my PTSD. It's been years but the scars have not gone away. Any advice would really help :)
