For anyone looking to move their mattress, look no further! This method worked perfectly on our drive from Los Angeles to Seattle! We drove through rain storms, snow storms, and coastal winds with no issues. Thanks so much Sleepy Sal!!

That's great! How fast did you drive and what kind of car did you use? I'm hoping my VW Jetta will be alright on my 2.5 hour journey that will require significant time on the freeway

LegoNinja21 Our car is a 2019 VW Tiguan! We drove the speed limit for the majority of the trip but we avoided freeways as much as possible. When freeways couldn’t be avoided, we stayed 5 mph under the posted speed limit and in the far right lane. Good luck on your journey! I’m sure it’ll be great.

1:20 Ratchet straps at least 15 feet long 2:20 Unscrew the flexible antenna from your roof. Put cardboard over the remaining stub of the antenna. 2:40 Quilt/Soft side of mattress down to protect your vehicle. 3:20 Boxspring upside down on top of mattress. 4:10 Throw side with no hook across your roof to the other side. 4:35 Open any doors that will have people sitting and put strap INSIDE then shut door. This way the strap won't hold the door shut in an emergency. For seats without passengers, since they are ok to tie shut, it's ok to just thread the strap through the open window. 5:10 Take the other piece of the ratchet pair and go hook in hook, then position the hooks above the mattress. 5:20 Feed strap from interior toward exterior through the center slot of the ratchet, then pull the end down to get rid of the slack. 5:30 With one hand holding that free end down, use your other hand to ratchet up and down to tighten. 6:20 Do the same for the rear straps. Be toward the rear of the rear windows (end closest to trunk) to get max grip. 6:50 Position the ratchet and hooks a bit higher then again With one hand holding that free end down, use your other hand to ratchet up and down to tighten. 7:30 To UNDO the ratchet, hold the release button up as you pull down on the ratchet all the way down until it opens full parallel 180 degrees, at which point it will suddenly stop latching. Now you can pull the bottom strap off. 7:50 Summary. Buy ratchet strap at least 15 feet long and rated at least 400lbs strength. Need at least 2 sets, but could also use 3 sets of ratchet straps if you want to be extra secure. 8:10 You can then close your windows to have yet another thing holding the straps securely.

Honestly a single 2-inch strap was enough force for me. I did it with one. Full size mattress + box spring. 55 MPH. Because the extra compression/springs and surface conformity of the mattress creates a ton of friction to make it stay put.

This video saved me so much money on transportation. I was really nervous at first going on the highway with a queen size mattress and box spring, but once I got the ratchet straps on (I used three - 500lb straps) it felt realllllyyyy secure. I followed is directions exactly step by step and now I am 1000% confident the next time we have to move. Harbor Freight had the straps he’s using for 11.99 for the 4pack and the ones I used were 3.99 each (blue)

As I said that I will post my review after we reach the destination, We put our full size beautyrest mattress with bunkie board on top of SUV exactly as Sleep Sal showed, with the same brand racket straps. Since ours was suv we put 2 through the door in the front and 2 through the window in the rear. We drove without any issues @ 70 mph for 300 miles. We did have rain in the forecast so our mattress had double plastic cover and trussed with thick string. It took a long time for trussing this one but it also helped us in bringing down from our apartment and taking it up to another apartment. Thank you Sleepy Sal, without your video, we would not have done this adventure.

We moved from Indiana to Arizona, and this really was a helpful video for us. We couldn't afford the trailer, so we decided to put the mattress on top of our suv. Our family laughed at us, but it genuinely worked perfectly fine. This method really saved us money and prevented us from getting rid of our mattress and having to pay for another. Great advice. To add to it further, put microfiber washcloths or other soft material between the strap and the door or window jam. This prevents the strap from scuffing or scratching your cars paint or damaging moldings/weather-strip.

True, if you have a very nice vehicle, you may want to take the extra step. I have used ratchet straps several thousand times and have never had a single incident of damaged paint. I can see that it is possible, so taking the precaution may be wise on some vehicles.

I discovered that up to 35mph it worked well, but when I tried to drive faster, the mattress was going upwards. So, I didn't want to risk and arrived safely (some 50miles) driving slowly. By the way, yes, king size one.

I use the exact same straps from Harbor freight to take an extra long twin mattress on a sedan car. I used all four of the Harbor freight straps the exact ones that you used. This was a great explanation! I need to move my daughters mattress today and I drive a SUV. I’m on my way to buy some ratchet straps. Simple explanation too. Thanks can wait to see what other helpful videos you put out !

Thank you sleepy Sal! I’ve got one of those mattresses that came in a box but I don’t think I can easily get it back in the box or squeeze it into my car without damaging it haha :) this is perfect thank you :)

I just stacked a queen mattress, a full mattress and a full box spring and drove over 100 miles in a VW Passat using this method! Thanks Sal!

Thank you so much!! Ive been worried about picking up my boxspring because I only have an SUV no truck. Now I feel confident that I can safely transport it AND I know exactly the kind of straps I need. Very very useful. Keep up the good work 🙌

Update: we transported our boxspring on top of my Santa Fe SUV using 3 ratchet straps (I bought them rated at 1000lbs) and it was sooooo windy, but nothing moved an inch using the tips in this video. I am beyond thrilled because this means I no longer need to rely on people with a truck anymore ☺️ thank you! 🙏

Thanks Sleepy Sal for the very informative way for me to move my mattress this coming Wednesday and using my Hyundai instead of renting a van for $$$!!!! I only have a memory foam and only have to travel 5 miles with it and now I know how!!! Thanks again

Hey! Did you only transport your mattress or a box spring too? Wondering if this will work just for a light queen size mattress. I don’t have a box spring so hoping the wind won’t lift it up (because mattress is light weight)
