Personally I thought that quote was far off the mark the moment she said it. What she said immediately after was a good correction. "The songwriter has an ability to convert the emotional experience / the human experience into redeeming beauty, long after the pain has passed."

I had a really sad heart because of a girl and I wrote a song about the whole situation. The moment I finished it, I no longer felt sad but rather felt a huge relief and joy. As she said, it was framed and I could relive it from a more positive perspective.

I remember watching this when it came out. Entranced by her and her artistic ability - desiring more than anything to be able to do what she does. Here I am, watching it 4 years later, and I have my own set-up and am producing / writing my own music on a daily basis. The connection to source through this solitude is very pure. She's incredible in her expression.

They do not seem to be moved because not many musicians, no experience of what she said, simply curious. Anyway, they clapped at the end of the speech. So I think they get her point, and she had a successful speech to describe hard concepts for those who have no experience of it. That is what Ted is for, to spread ideas.

As a musician who has a very identical approach what hits me most is that she is able to produce such feeling in front of a pretty much dead audience. I have always waited for a sort of dialogue. I lay out my feelings and someone will nod and reassure me. She doesn't wait for the audience to agree with her. She just shouts her feelings, knowing that if they are sincere they will reach those who are eager to listen. thank you.

I would say that maybe that's because she is really close to what she feels. It's so intimate, and at the same time there is no doubt...she knows very well how to "look" and navigate inside, whoever is watchinh outside. Also, yeah, sometimes silent and respectful observation is actually the space you need to be given in order to express yourself.

Mushrooms merely confirmed what I already knew.

She can see and feel music literally . I can tell. Some of the audience may see it as just “music”. But this is an extension of life and expression that only certain people have the gift of understanding. It’s like a 6th sense. I wish I was there live. And I love how she incorporates the metronome at certain parts, because it’s not only just to keep tempo. She’s using it as an instrument.

as an artist, we are trying to express the human experience.... she perfectly articulated the artist experience

YT is filled with musical artists that have been doing this sort of thing live for over a decade. Making music in one's humble home studio and then sharing it with the world is an honor, even when the world couldn't care less. Many great YT musicians don't get the honor and respect that they deserve. Almost all do it for free out of love for their craft. The competition for viewers is astoundingly immense, and great music will go unheard too. So, if you do come across some music that you think is good, give them a thumbs up rather than just moving on to another channel. It helps the musician and it shows respect for something that is given to you free of charge.

I literally cried hearing this woman speak. The imagery she invokes with her attempt to put sound and music into a language that we can talk about is nothing short of amazing.

Her level of coherence and knowing herself is extraordinary. What she doesn't specifically say is how difficult of challenging it is to connect to her emotional life. However, in her communication she does all of that and more by inferring that her emotional experience is definitely hers and therefore so is yours, ours. There is a profound sophistication in her sharing her artform. She is truly genius. I am so inspired. And also find her so freakin attractive, as she, by truly being herself, made herself approachable and vulnerably safe to enter her world. WOW!

@Justice Briana Coming from an empathic place, "getting it" is a tough word 😅. People fall under aspects and get some things and not others... you know what I mean? Broken qualities of good and bad add flavor to the world of imperfections made "perfect" through our own living experiences through it 💞. I know what you mean wanting to find those that "get it", trust me! But they maybe closer than you think and you just don't have the right frame of reference to see them. A great example of this would be the cover album of Santana, a lion drawing at first glance but more if you actually look at it, or the old lady/young lady ink drawing. Our "senses", upbringing, and environment have a way of distorting what is and isn't. Seeing clearly is the great divider.

Same here. She has such an amazing thought process. Definitely gave me a new way to look at composing.

She strummed my pain with her fingers and sang my life with her words.

As a musician.. the only place I wanted to be other than playing in front of an audience, was in the studio. There's nothing quite like taking your raw ideas, much like a woodworker with an untouched piece of wood, and building and shaping and molding and layering and laboring your idea into a refined piece of work. To listen to your ideas come to life, and listening to the final product is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world!

I think she's one of those people who thinks in abstract thoughts and doesn't think in voice

what an inspiration! A professional musician for 45 years, I lost the use of my hands due to severe arthritis. I'm now beginning to retrain myself using phone Apps. hearing the beautiful musicality that Rachel can bring forth from what most people would dismiss as button pushing is truly a wonderful inspiration for someone like me. as I became increasingly disabled, two things became apparent to me. One, I am a musician, still think, and hear, and listen like a musician. Two, my creativity started coming out and all sorts of strange and funny way of such as learning how to make toys for children out of bamboo, which I grow. You can't keep creativity down.

That's beautiful. I'm glad you still have outlets to channel that energy and creativity. I lost someone close to me this year, who was a prolific guitar shredder! Ever since I first watched it, that part has lived rent free in my brain. It is just so smooth and I loved the musical homage to the lyrics. It was perfectly in sync. Really, this whole thing was just stellar, and made me want to cry. I had a gut wrenching reaction to some of her instrument and note choices, which tells me what my own inner world vibes with and gives me a sort of compass to seek out my own direction artistically one day. I watch this periodically when I feel I need to connect to the inner world and the source. Just a beautiful gem of a talk.

6:43 She put perfectly into words how I feel about producing music as well. I do enjoy working with other people, but working in solitude (often in the wee hours), I seem to able to tap into something I can't when there's others around. Funny how this also goes both ways though, working with others can also give you fresh views and ideas you haven't had before.

It felt like pure relaxation, not having to worry abt anything and I could just FEEL the music. I always have like 1000 thought in my head at the same time so it felt really good having my head empty. IDK how to get there tho, just happens randomly I guess?

Absolutely loved the track! Oh and, her explanation how D minor isn't in fact the saddest of all keys -- people carry the sadness inside them. D minor just seems to be a harmonic match for a particular kind of sadness. So true.

Well, certainly IF you come from the same or congruent cultures, otherwise NOT. This has all been researched thoroughly. The shift in the values for the "right" pitch alone screws the pooch. A=440hz. Or 432. Or 442. Or 436hz. Uh-oh.

One good thing about music: when it hits you feel no pain

I remember Trent Reznor saying, at the beginning of his group Nine Inch Nails, that he gathered a band to play live because the thought of playing on a stage alone was terrifying to him. This lady has talent and a huge amount of courage. Respect!

I disagree with that outlook of everyone can do everything. Id prefer realism and honesty and appreciation of the talents of others without needlessly showering them with praise and overloads of positivity. Not saying that's what you're doing here of course, just in general I think we'd benefit in the long run from all having truthful understandings of the world around us rather than the idea that every person could and should be a model and a rock star. lol

Man, I was having a real mentally bad moment. I've been trying to write a song for the past few hours and my lack of progress and direction have been chipping away at my mental health. I was sitting here with my guitar while watching this, and when she started playing, I just started jamming along with her. And it felt so natural, and so fun, and it helped me rediscover what drew me to music in the first place.

There's a beautiful atmosphere to the style she plays. I love massive sounds and soundscapes, and her chord progression was well selected. She demonstrated her skill with scales and knowledge of the field. Not to mention, you have to have a good sense of time to know when to change the parameters of each sequence while singing lead vocals! Quite inspiring, really.

I remember those feelings she’s talking about, that ”zone". When a single note could make you mentally and almost physically fly away, disappear into another universe. Just me of 14 years old, a guitar, a synthesizer and my voice in a tiny 15 m² apartment with no family left and no friends just the ”zone”. A long time ago now but when she speaks I feel it as if it was today.. In a good way.

Sometimes you have to get inside the cracks that exists between the words or at least between the feelings that already have names and you have to kind of blindly and bravely feel your way around that very non-illuminated space until you stumble across the light switch in the hope that non of the monsters are real. In art in faithful self-expression you go until you've lit up the dark space.

She is HUGE! She just told us that frequencies can resonate to express images and feelings beyond our limited language... that is the expression of another sense and another dimension of perception. She is a human being, beign a real human, using all the human brain capabilities to flow through the web of consciousness.

i’ve never related to something more in my life. as a singer song writer and practising producer, everyday is a wonderful struggle to try and translate feeling into sound. even tho my knowledge of music production is limited right now, i know i must master this language because no one can manifest my vision into this world like i can. i am excited to learn, change and grow through music and show the outer world my inner world. thank you claudio, you are an inspiration! 🖤

What did I just listen to ?? I felt it deep within my body.. My gut was tighten up for no reason ? I was clinging to the voice of a beauty, as a bass player I was fixed on the bass sound, "killing me softly" freaked amazing...

It is, by consequence of the sheer white knight of it against the obviousness that she’s in need of attention for not having anything to offer besides the d minor, and that like any musician, translating feeling into sound warrants her the special spot on TED.

I play it all along, every time. I love languages, translation psychology, Music, Electro music, and ... EMOTIONS. It brings it all. Together. Thanx @Claudio !
