How To Train A Samoyed To Stop Barking

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

How to train a Samoyed to stop barking. That's a tall order for many Samoyed owners. It helps to understand why they're barking. Your Samoyed doesn't bark, just to hear himself bark.....ok, maybe he does, because his voice is beautiful....to him. They bark, because they want something. As a dog, or Samoyed owner, it helps to know why they're barking, so you can stop them, from barking. Yeti and his Mom explain, in today's video.
Check out this video for more tips on how to stop barking:

Thank you Gufo64, we really appreciate it. I’m so glad to hear our tips have been helpful. We’ve done quite a few videos on new puppies and training tips. Sammies can be stinkers until they’re 2 years old, but a good way to way to prevent that is, never let them get bored. Active dogs = a lot of energy needs to spent. Yeti wakes up instantly from a deep sleep. His entire body leaps up onto all fours and he says ‘Mom, I’m ready to go. Play, give treats, walk me.’ Sammies have zero patience and they’re like alarm clocks. Once they get used to a specific schedule, they need that schedule to stay. They get upset, demanding and bark a lot when you’re not doing what the schedule says you have to do. Yeti kept me on track during the beginning of our KZread channel. He’d get upset if we didn’t film a few times a week. They keep you on task.

I have to say that "talking" and "barking" are completely different things. My 2 Sammies talk at me all the time. One just makes little howly noises, which are very sweet. The other makes kind of growly low pitched grunts and growls. They don't bark, so I don't mind at all. They only bark at two times: 1) when a dog walks by and 2) when they are going for a walk and are very excited. When they are going for a walk, it makes sense because - well, I don't know if you ever experienced a dog sled team when they are being hooked up before a run. They are so excited that they can't contain themselves. To train a Sammy to not bark, don't yell - they just think you're joining in, don't give treats when they bark - like you did in the video, and be very quiet and don't make eye contact with them if you want them to calm down. They will bark at you at first, but then after a while they get the idea. You have to be vigilant, as all dogs - Sammy or not - will train YOU instead of the other way around.

Due to the power of editing, it appears like I rewarded for barking. I do not. It’s simply due to having made cuts in my filming. Yeti always must be quiet and calm prior to getting any treats. He gets them once he’s quiet and calm. Never before. The reason it appeared like I gave them to him prior, was because of how I edited. My first Sam, Chewy, used to talk and bark. Yeti doesn’t talk much. He barks. He does get super excited to go on walks, especially prior to sled dogging.

Yeti always picks the most inopportune moments to bark. Like, within 5 minutes before the end of a show/movie, when the big moments are happening. He does it to ask for treats, rubs, more treats, film KZread. All we need, is just 5 more minutes, to find out who gets kicked off ‘Survivor.’ But, no, he doesn’t let us. A show that would take a half hour to watch, takes over an hour. Yeti is a wonderful dog, who I love so much. It’s fun having conversations with him. I love it when he tilts his head, side to side. I just periodically need a mute button.

They sure are, Sliph. I do really like how expressive they are. Yeti isn’t as expressive as my first Samoyed was. Yeti likes to bark. My first Samoyed, would howl, awhoo and woo-woo all day. It was in sentence form and you could understand exactly what he was talking about. It takes some work understanding what Yeti has to say. When he begs me for treats, I know what he’s doing, but I like to tease him. He’ll glance at the treats, glance at me. When I still don’t ‘understand’ what he’s saying, he’ll sweep his head toward the treats. They all have different ways of communicating with us. It’s all so precious.

I was able to teach my first Samoyed, Chewy, 'quiet' commands. But Yeti's like, nope, heck you Mom. I'm gonna talk when I want to talk. Which is when he knows he's about to go on a walk or get treats. What I do, is I get him to sit and quiet. Once he's silent, he gets hooked up on his harness, or gets his treats. You never want to acknowledge the bad behavior, but do acknowledge their good behavior the moment they do what you want.

I wouldn’t give Judah Pepto, unless it’s advised by the vet. Call the vet to ask. They may need to do a stool sample, to see if there’s a bug. They’ll probably put him on some dietary food for a few feedings, to help clean up the poopy butt. Poor baby fuzz. Hopefully, it’s just some type of bad tummy. Don’t give him anything meant for people, unless you’ve spoken to his vet.

I also don’t know if I should get one as my first dog. Could you give some tips?

Hello, Thomas Yuan. Samoyeds are great dogs, who bear a lot of responsibility. I would encourage you to have your parents also watch Yeti and I, as it will ultimately be their decision on the type of dog for your family. Samoyeds bear a lot of responsibility and a lot of grooming. I don’t have any doubts you and your dog would have a lot of fun wearing one another out. But, a Samoyed has a giant, long, thick double coat of fur that sheds epically. They require extensive daily brushing, which takes a long time, using multiple brushes. If you convince your parents this is the right dog for you, both of your parents will have you brush your dog. When I was a teenager, my parents made me brush my dog everyday. My dog loved being brushed, especially his belly. I can tell you, it takes time, energy and effort, to get your dog to enjoy being brushed. Again, please have your parents watch our videos too, so they know the type of dog you want and what they can expect.

Yeti does the same thing. So do Quimby and Bigby, so did my first Sammy, Chewy. In fact, all the Sams I’ve met and known have done that. They’re such a happy breed, which oftentimes makes them very loud. Calm them down first, by getting them to sit, which may take a treat to distract. Once they’re quiet and sitting nicely, have the person say hello. When I’m able to get Yeti to sit, which could take a treat to entice, they calm and quiet down.

  • @YetisPlace

Hello, Aespirin. It’s up to each breeder to decide who they’d like to sell to. There are many factors a breeder goes through. It may not just be that you don’t have a yard. If you haven’t owned a Sammy before, that could be a factor. They’re working dogs, who have boundless energy. If they’re not provided a lot of activity, plenty of long walks, they become destructive. They’re also extremely talkative dogs and become more so, when they’re not given what they want. They shed excessively and need nearly daily grooming.

Bring him a long walk, with plenty of playtime, prior to putting him in his crate. Make the crate enticing, by giving treats. I would backtrack a bit on the crate training. Start training while you’re home with him. Leave the gate open, lure him inside with a tasty treat. Plenty of verbal praise. Don’t close the door. Stay in the room with him. Do this multiple times a day, when you’re home with him. He knows that when he goes in his crate, he’s going to be left alone. Sams don’t like being left alone. Walk and play a lot before putting in his crate. Tired puppies, make easier to train puppies. Praise, work on training while you’re home with him.

  • @YetisPlace

Wait until you own a home, or move into an apartment separated from others. Sammies not only are extremely talkative which you really can’t stop, but they shed epically. Landlords wouldn’t allow Sams for those reasons. Their fur would clog all heating/cooling vents, when they get bored, they become destructive and would destroy an apartment. Sams aren’t good for first time owners. Their training requires different techniques than other breeds.

No. If you are too lazy to bring on multiple mile walks daily and play a lot with your dog, a Samoyed isn’t a good fit. Much too active of a dog. When they’re bored, they will literally eat your house and destroy everything you own.

Sammies are so routine oriented, it’s humorous for them, but not as much for us. You could shift his bedtime to a half hour later. 9:30pm to 6:30am. Or 10pm to 7am. Keep him up by playtime and a final outside potty check immediately before bedtime, followed by good boy treats.

I hear your pain. I’m the late to the bed parent. I bring Yeti outside before my bedtime. My husband is the early to bed, early to rise parent. Yeti has the routine though, of following me to the bathroom, where he lays outside the door. A bit after I go to bed, he lays right in our bedroom doorway, panting profusely and loudly. Wakes my husband, to drag him to the family room, or upstairs to another, cooler bedroom. Yeti doesn’t like sleeping alone, but the bedroom is too warm for him.

I think my older girl, Anastasia, just likes to hear herself bark. I do try to figure out what she's barking at. I try to tell her I don't speak Sammie. She gets quite loud when trying to make a point. She's very sassy, and it's harder to train my younger girl, Petra, when she's around. She will bark at me to stop training her... I guess out of wanting the attention on her? Just not sure, but still trying to learn the Sammie language. XD

  • @YetisPlace

    @YetisPlace

The Sammy language is they always want you to do what they want to do. Mom, bring me on a walk. Mom, throw my ball. Mom, throw my hedgehog honking/squeaking toy so I can watch it fly past my head and then I can bark at you so you can go get it for me. Mom, I want treats. Mom, rub me….psyche! Mom, catch me….you can’t catch me because I’m faster than you. Mom, did you say my buddies Quimby and Bigby are coming over in top secret code?! Mom, your show is 3 minutes from ending, now’s the time for you to play with me again. Mom, I wanna go outside so I can hang out and just sniff the sky. Sammies get us to do what they want. We’re not in control. They’re in control. If we choose to ignore them, then yes, you’re right. They bark harder and louder and get up right in your face. You can hide under a blanket, but they just think, OH BOY! Mom’s playing a game! I love games! You can’t stop a Sam from barking. But, you can understand what they want and try to beat them to it. You’ll get to know their crazy facial expressions before they’re about to bark, so you’ll be able to curb it.

Sammies love training. It’s just not a simple sit, stay, down, come. They get bored too easily and will bark and destroy things. You just have to make it a game for them. Then they bark because they’re having a great time.

Hello, Reese Maile. They are difficult to train, because they’re very smart. One of the world’s smartest breeds of dog. You have to think like they do and always be one step ahead of them, to be able to successfully train one. That can be sometimes be difficult, even for a seasoned dog trainer. They’re not good dogs for first time owners, due to the difficulty training, endless shedding and their talkativeness. They bark all the time, even while sleeping. Very talkative dogs. They talk for happy reasons. They love and adore all people. Kids are their favorite people. They are good with other family pets, if you train them that the other animal, is a pet.

Hello, Jade_Draws! Start small. Introduce to small groups of people. Work your way up. Samoyeds are really excited and happy to meet everyone, but they must learn not to be overly excited. Calm them down, have them sit, prior to meeting someone. Once they’re sitting, then have the person say hi. Start small, with small groups of people and work your way up.

Sammies are very talkative. The reason they were so talkative, was because they had so much energy. They had to play, to wear off the energy, so they’d be quiet. If you own one Samoyed, that’s walks, playtime, have them help you carry sticks and lawn debris. Then, they’re quiet. You want them to live inside with you, otherwise, they will bark non-stop.

what tips and tricks we do? we ignore our puppy til he kinda silences himself than we reward him and play with him cuddle him. whatever he whants really. works like a charm. He is kinda getting sassy wich he does alot. When he whants to walk he tries to grab the leesh. Bring it to me or the lady i have if he gets it. Than we go with him. if he playes with my pants and leesh we stop 2mins max or til hes calm and than walk more. If he jumps or is to exicted and barking outside that i do not really are about. I only care if he is to exicted. Wich usially means trying to grab leesh zoomies with leesh on and trying to grab my pants. Than i sit him down and he just have that cheeky smile. on closed playground i dont care what he does. He can bark zoomies and sniff around and poo and be silly all he whants. Espesicially when we bring hes playmates. Than let them have their me me time. We only care if he starts acting a bit to much stupid. The usial grabbing things he shouldnt or digging he shouldnt. Grabbing my wifes jacket cause its funny thats a no no. and my pants ofc. Thats the only time we react. We also train him in obidience and he is very obidient we do have treats with us juuust in case hes a bit exicted.

Sammies do love hunting rabbits, squirrels, rodents, woodchucks.…SKUNKS. Yeti too, has darted off super quickly after any of them and has taken me with him. I suffered a rotator cuff strain as a result of his adventures. They’re very powerful dogs, who love great chases. The positive thing about their chases, is the suburb energy release. One of the purposes of Sammies, is hunting small prey and herding reindeer. Unfortunately, we are unable to control that sudden excitement and very quick, forceful lunge they feel when they catch grass and leaves rustling, due to a small animal. Dog parks are phenomenal energy releases and are much easier on your body. You can unleash your dog there, giving your body a bit of reprieve. I’ve also found walking Yeti in town, on sidewalks, through our neighborhood, is more comfortable than walking on a trail. Especially as my strained rotator cuff recovers from Yeti getting super excited. If you choose to walk in town, stay away from dog treat stores and ice cream stands. They also result in extreme, stubborn, powerful Sammy pulling. Your Sam might also become awfully determined to go the opposite direction of you. In that case, sometimes you periodically have to give in. I have found that treats are a great distraction, so please bring them on your walk.

Xiomara is a true Samoyed! They sure do get excited when asking for treats....and everything else. For some reason, Bigby is normally really quiet. Probably because Quimby talks enough for both of them. Bigby is stealthy. Yeti is a good in between. Quimby has been squirted in the face a few times with water. It doesn’t help. It doesn’t work to get him to stop talking. Quimby adored my late Samoyed, Chewy, who was older than they were. Quimby kept getting closer and closer to Chewy, when Chewy would bark, telling him to back away. Chewy bit Quimby a few times, because Quimby just never learned to back away when Chewy started to snarl at him. Quimby always thought it meant to get closer. Yeti sometimes has to run and hide from Quimby. Quimby still hasn’t learned to back away. Yeti just thinks, ok, I’ve had enough, going to hide in the bathroom. Yeti always enjoys hearing me read your stories, Terry.
