In this episode we show you how to throw a cast net without using your teeth or going over your shoulder. It is a simple and effective way to open up the net and catch live bait. This works great for nets from 4 feet to 8 feet.
For cast nets 8 feet to 14 feet, we recommend the triple load method as seen in this video:

I agree, I especially like that I don't have to put lead anywhere near my face. I was throwing pancakes in my front yard and then of course, couldn't get the net to open when i was in the boat... damn pogies were ramming into the side of the boat and I kept coming up empty.

This is by far the best net method I've seen and i would say it took about 5 throws to get it right. I was throwing my 8 footer in the park last week and a guy across the road came over and asked me how i was throwing it so well, he disappeared over to his boat parked in the yard and asked me to teach him with your method. Captain Mike, you are a legend.

Thank you! I have had an 8 foot, 3/8" mesh cast net for fifteen years and never used it. I watched your video and practiced your technique over the weekend and took the skiff out today to cast for shrimp. It worked! My casts are not 100% perfect, but the net opens 80% of the way 80% of the time -- good enough, and I am getting better -- and I occasionally get a perfect one. It is a great skill to have. Your video is much appreciated!

This is by far the easiest way to throw and fully open a 6 to 8 ft net. I’ve tried all possible ways and this is the best. The triple load method is complicated and requires tons of practice and only needed for 10 or 12 foot nets.

In a day I was throwing oval, working towards pancakes. For me, the secret was in the secret sauce, took a bit to grasp the concept. You,ve done and excellent job in the tutorial. I put your way to the test on an 8ft castnet. I compared it to another castnet method. Your method was faster loading and opened the net wider. I did it on a brad new net fresh out of the box and not smoking in fabric softener. Very smooth. I live in Indian River County and catching live bait is a must. The mullet run is coming up in September. I have been crushing tarpon at night on live mullet and greenies in the Fort Pierce Inlet area. Your videos are great and I have been recommending them to beginning anglers. Keep it up.

Capt. Mike, It's funny, I watched this video last year, followed the steps, and it didn't work on my 7' Betts. Then, your vid popped up again today, and it worked perfectly. I figured it out. I wasn't grabbing the half of the net that crossed over in the middle to make the upper level, but was just letting it hang. When I grabbed it in the middle, to make the "two levels", suddenly it works perfectly every time. Because you just use your arms and shoulders, this method is more tiring, but it works great for lighter nets! I still use the teeth and spin method for my 10 and 12' nets, but I'm about to re-watch your big net videos, and I'm guessing they will work, now that I'm thinking right. Thanks for taking your time to teach others.

Captain Mike, I ran across your video as well as a hundred others on throwing a cast net, everyone seems to have their own spin. In the end its what woks for you. Anyhow I tried your method as it seemed about the easiest to load the net than others that had like net in my mouth or two groups of led on over each shoulder. Anyhow I practiced your method for few days and kept thinking what I was doing wrong that I could not consistently get a full spread. In my head I understood that one group of lead had to go one direction the other group another and the leading end in your hand had to trail so it was forming a triangle in a way as you release to get a full spread. I think the one key component in you video you let out that would get people to catch on quicker is for them to understand do not try to just chuck the net straight out into the water but there is a release method. You must throw and release in a circular motion as you toss so you get the lead leads goin in two different directions as your trailing hand just barely hangs onto the last piece of net. Once I figured that out you loading process is a breeze. After about 4 days of off and on practice I got, throwing an 8ft net, matter of fact I think I could easily throw 12ft net now. Anyway appreciate the video it got me started in the right direction.

When I was a boy in southern Louisiana I would throw a cast net many times every day catching shrimp and small fish to use as bait (or sometimes just to eat the larger shrimp that night). Apparently I lost that skill along the way because I could not remember for the life of me my old method. I'm not sure that your method is what I used to do (I remember I used my mouth to hold part of the net?) - but your method works perfect. Throwing perfect circles again. Thank you for the video and sharing your knowledge.

You learn something new every day! Can’t wait to try this technique tomorrow! You have one of the absolute most informative channels on the The Tube, always great info and super easy to follow directions! I just ordered one of your shirts too, I’ll get a hat too if you ever offer fitted hats! Thanks Capt. Mike!

South Florida native, Been throwing my net the exact same way since I was 6. Always would be soaked in min but constant pancakes lol I found this video a week ago and decided to switch it up, pancake after pancake boys and not soaked at all. Moray don't show the technique as clear as you. You make it simple and easy. Got 5 days in marathon key in about 2 weeks. Looking forward to filling the bait bucket!

I used to throw a net when I was little (and was good at it) but then after years of being away from it and now having dentures I found myself struggling to throw the net properly. I looked at a bunch of other videos on how to do this without putting the lead line in my teeth (lips) and all of the other methods didn't seem to work for me. I came across yours and VOILA! Got it to open close to perfect circle first time which I am sure will only get better with practice. I appreciate the time you took to make this video. Thank you.

Amazing! I've been trying occasionally for the last year to throw my cast net without success. After watching your video, I can make a perfect circle cast everytime. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hi Mike, I have a 8th footer net since 1993 and I have never learned how to use it, l admit that I have been frustrated with my fishing experience but this is all about patience and leaning techniques from the best and you have a great method for casting,, I casted three times and I had two pancakes, not pretty but it was a circle, and I am practicing in my backyard, thanks again, a I want to learn surf fishing to catch Pampanga, whiting and whatever is good eating, then pier and finally fishing from a boat. I whish you blessings, thanks.

Thanks Capt Mike. I really appreciate your instructions on how to cast a net. I watched your video and my confidence began rise immediately. I had never cast a net ever. Now, I feel pretty confident when casting my seven footer. I continue to practice each step to ensure my net opens on every cast. Thanks again Sel

Mike, I've been an offshore mate and/or Capt for more than 19years (85% of that time has been in the Mid-Atlantic and when I was out of west palm I had another guy on board who was Fl native and could throw pancakes with the 12-14'er every time so I didnt stress it) Well, my castnet illiteracy has been bugging the hell out of me so I've made a point to improve. YOUR STYLE FINALLY HAS ME THROWING A DECENTLY SUCCESSFUL TOSS :) The only problem is now I can barely lift my right arm, lmao. The tinker Mack's wont stand a chance on our next overnighter:)
