How To Test Standard Batteries With A Multimeter (AA, AAA, C)-Tutorial
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video, I show you how to test standard batteries with a multimeter. It is a simple tutorial, and I go over some basic steps that you can use to find out the voltage of some common batteries that you probably have lying around the house. These are the batteries that are commonly used in converters and various other small household electronics. With that being said, I show you the exact setting that you should be using on your multimeter, and where you should be putting the probes in order to get an accurate reading.

Some of the dumbest people I've known in my life openly thought they were smarter than everyone around them. I have a feeling this guy fits into that category. He's showing the part that most people already know how to do without giving you the info that's actually important... Like what the values of the readings hrs getting mean and what the battery voltage of a full battery should be. Instead he thinks people can't figure out that you test a AA battery the same as a C battery.
with all the complaints I am seeing in the comments I am surprised that some of you super techs aren’t catching the fact that he’s putting the positive lead on first. Young man this is supposed to be helpful for you. Whenever you’re using any kind of test equipment you always use the black or ground first otherwise if you use the other end first then your ground is already charged and that’s why you get sparks. Granted you’re not gonna get sparks from these little batteries but when you get into testing bigger stuff will have your current do you want to use your meter properly. Always use your black lead first. See folks I actually might helped him with something.

Glad you added that. The Gardner Bender instructions I have are pretty explicit on that point.
The information you probably came for!! This depends on the device. A dead battery will have a voltage of 1.25 or less (Kid Toys, Motorized device), but some devices can run down to 1 volt (TV remote, calculator).

Aaaaaand the winner of the removal of the dislike button is: this guy
Only problem is you didn’t tell us what is an appropriate voltage for a battery to be functional.
this method doesn't tell you if the battery is still good or not as there is nothing really drawing energy from it
How do you know what voltage represent a dead battery? Is there a chart somewhere for different types of battery?
This video made me realize TV and radio personalities actually are pretty high on something when they do their work.
Thank you. My meter came with instructions about the plugs, but not where I should turn the dial for different batteries. I needed to test AA, so this helped. Ignore the rude comments. Meters come with some sort of instructions, but may not be thorough enough for someone like me who never used one.
Wish you had explained which plug is which and what they’re used for. Otherwise, tested my battery successfully. Thank you.
It's easier to hold your negative probe/negative side (flater side) down first...then attach the positive probe

why did this video rate so high in my search result on Google? It has twice as many downvotes because he never explained what the values mean. And it appears from the comments he wasn't testing batteries the correct way either.
the definition why we MUST have a dislike counter. wasted a couple of minutes before realizing how bad the video was. Frick you, youtube.
So what's the standard for when after testing the battery you determine the battery is good or bad????

Exactly - the one piece of information that would have made this video useful was omitted.
I couldn't get past the "Heyyyyyyyyyyy everyboddddddy!"
What if it shows 1.4 or 1.3? Does that mean the battery won't work or it won't work as good as 1.5?
While I appreciate the enthusiasm in this video I am afraid it provides incomplete information. Merely probing both poles of a battery, which is at rest (not powering any device), does not tell you if that battery has enough charge to maintain that energy flowing to do work. The correct way to tell would be to measure both poles while also placing a *load* in the circuit with the battery, such as a 100 Ohm resistor. The resistor will put the battery under load and, if the battery has enough charge left in it, then it will generate an electric current in the circuit and your multimeter will read a voltage close to the battery's rated voltage. However, if the charge left in the battery is very low, then the reading on your multimeter will show a noticeable lower voltage from the battery when it is under load as opposed to when it is at rest.
What is the lowest reading for a battery and it still be good?
@red2965

Stephen it depends on what your using them in. If you're using them in a high voltage draw item you may still be able to get a little more out of it by using it in a low draw clock. Do not out them in the fridge that's a myth.

Never explained what the numbers mean. What is a good functioning battery supposed to read? What's 100%?
@ericgeorge5483

Thank you, someone with common sense.
Nope, you can get a normal voltage reading same as the battery. But the battery won't work under load. You need to use a resistor to put the battery under load while you test it.
To test a battery you need a resistance in series
The content of this video can be summarized in two sentences. Black wire is negative and red wire is positive. Turn multimeter to 20 V DC to test batteries. Everything else is meaningless banter.
The other question is what number means the battery is good to use or to dead to use which wasn't answered, testing ok, but what does the number mean
Wrong. This doesn’t test the charge level.
I HAVE FOUR AA BATTERIES. TWO ARE FACING IN ONE DIRECTION, AND THE OTHER TWO ARE FACING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. ALL FOUR AA BATTERIES ARE POWERING A SYSTEM AS A COMBINED POWER BATTERY PACK. HOW MANY VOLTS IS ALL FOUR BATTERIES COMBINED?
@JohnAlexanderBerry
Жыл бұрын
6 volts (assuming all 4 batteries are connected in series).
I tested myself and i am running about 15volts. Is this normal?
He been sticking them probes some place other than his battery terminals. I thought perhaps this would demonstrate how to use, oh idk, an ANALOG multimeter. Because let's face it, if you need a video tutorial for using a digital, well then, uh, natural selection everrrrrybaaaahhhhhdy!
Um. Ok. What is any of this supposed to mean? Also my multimeter doesn’t have DC or AC labeled. I see a wavy symbol and a line with 3 shorter lines under it so I’m assuming that is supposed to tell which one is which.
What if they are bad what will the voltage read?

They can still read exactly the same.. It's why you need a 100 ohm resistor to test them properly. This test in the video is absolutely meaningless.

@@kelway74 Yes indeed.The only way to test a battery properly is to use a good quality battery tester which applies a built-in resistive load (such as 100 ohms or more) to the battery, rather than a simple ''open circuit'' multimeter test directly across the terminals.

How to find the current of the battery?
Be gentle; I'm a beginner. Questions: Since these are 1.5V batteries should your meter have been set for 2000mV=2V? Does it matter? Would the 20V setting be more appropriate for a car battery (I think they are 12V)? (I just bought a cheap multimeter and I'm guessing I can't use it on a car battery because my meter only has 200m and 2000m settings.)
@Pyrolonn
6 ай бұрын
Yeah it doesn't matter, the settings really just tell the multimeter how many digits to produce. He picked the correct one you want to have two decimal places so it doesn't round up to 1.5. You actually want to use the same setting for car batteries too. You can always change the selection, it just changes the precision of the display.

1.58 but you didn't say if that was a good charge or the reading when it's a full charged battery.
So you didn't let us know if those were good or bad readinding, what would be a good reading be and what would be a bad reading be to let me know if the battery is good, or bad.
What is good or bad reading??????????????????????
You never said what the voltage should be for a good or bad battery should be. Also you should test with a resister under load to see if the battery is bad. But if your point was only to show people to put the probe on the battery. You were successful.,
If you want to put a video on then maybe you should say what's the lowest minimum and also when you're testing the batteries if you don't have the amps to push your voltage then you don't have anything
The video lacked many details, is way too long for what it says, and I wanted information, not to be talked to like a child.

It is good that is what a brand new battery will read.These. are 1.5volt batteries but brand new will always read a little more than 1.5. They usually won't read any more than 1.6 but between 1.5 to 1.6 is 100% fully charged.
This video is the perfect example of why need to be able to see dislikes

Very poor as useless just to test the voltage without putting a load through the battery

Now this must be a former employee of Dizzyland! I was waiting for him to say Hi Boys & Girls! Never finished even half way, went straight to the comments...this is HOW NOT to make a YT video!
Not a good test as no load is applied unless your DMM has a battery test selection for batteries on the selector. The DMM shown didn't have this, so you were looking at a no load test. Not valid. To do this properly, this is a good video to watch: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fJ55zrmjYMmsiJc.htmlsi=q205rFTRwPTKVtsB
