You're a lifesaver thanks for the information. Had a truck there was so much slop in the 5 wheel, thought the Kingpin on the trailers were going to break, drove it for a whole year complaining about it to my company I drove for. They would never fix it , the company , said I complain too much about maintenance and they fired me. So after that, they finally replaced the fifth wheel plate and rails, the mechanic for the company only put in every other nut and bolt on the fram rails, the person that drove it next was shut down by Colorado. DOT. because of the missing nuts and bolts. Wish you had made this video about a year ago. I could have killed somebody , and the company would have just blamed me. You can't put a price tag on your CDL.

I like a long slide blockable 48" tall air slide. In 28yrs in a truck the above setup can pull everything. And I need 15 ft from kingpin to centerline of steer axle. In a Small bunk Cabover. If your pulling older trailers get a kingpin go/nogo gauge. I pull new old all the above.

A new cusion ring and jaw is $500. You don't need to take the top plate off to rebuild the 5th wheel. In less than an hour you can rebuild that 5th wheel. Jost has made these super easy to adjust and rebuild. Save your extra money for fuel.

One more good reason to have a sliding 5th wheel is, you can get your trailer closer to the truck for better air flow / fuel mileage

Get 12000 lbs on steer to maximize the gross weight. My truck weighs 18000 lbs. I pull Alot of 40ft Tri axle trailers. it helps with the trailer pushing you in the curves and rain.

Ryan, great videos! My go to mx place. Thanks. I have a question regarding 5th wheel placement. So are King Pins alwasy built in the same place or same measurement from the front of the trailer? And so then how do you figure where to mount a fifth will slider plate? I have seem some on a 3-axle tractor that looked way too far forward. And the sliding portion was very short (back and forwards). I have seem some tractors where the 5th wheel was way the heck back. (i realized you dont scale out w the 5th wheel like that). But how do you know when is right or not right? And how hard is it have the whole kit moved back ?l Thanks I guess you need a whole "5th Wheel School " video!!

All of that depends on what type of trailer you'll be pulling. When pulling open deck trailer you might need more space between the cab and trailer for front overhang. With an rgn (removable gooseneck) you might need it to be at the tail of the truck so the drives will clear the deck when turning.

Hi Ryan, I just recently bought my first used truck and everything seems to be fine so far until I noticed that the 5th wheel is completely flat and it stays flat when its normal position supposed to be tilted down when not hitched to anything. I know some people lock the tilting function on their 5th wheels when hooking up the truck to frameless trailers and thus the 5th wheel will have some modification to accomplish that. However, I looked at mine and it seems stock with no modifications. I have a JOST 5th wheel like yours... so is my tilting seized and needs some sort of repair or does it need to be hooked up to a trailer and give it some flexing by going in and out of driveways to loosen it up? Your input will be greatly appreciated Ryan

5th wheels are super easy to adjust. When they run out of adjustment you can rebuild it easily and cheaply. Just get the service instructions from the manufacturer. It's hard to believe any mechanic would replace a top plate just because the old one needs a new spring and an adjustment.
