How to tell if your car or truck has a limited slip differential

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video shows you how to tell if your rear wheel drive car or truck has a limited slip differential, and also what gears it has. It is quick and all you do is read the tab on the differential pumpkin, or lift the rear and spin the tires... While moving one tire by hand, If the tires move in the same direction (or one doesnt move), it means that it is most likely a limited slip (posi traction) rear end. A limited slip rear uses a special additive to the gear oil when you do a gear-oil change, and it is necessary or damage could occur. An open differential (like the one in the video) does not use the special additive and the tires spin in opposite directions when one tire is spun.

4-10 doesn’t mean “4 to 10” for your gear ratio, it means your ratio is 4.10 to 1. (Your driveshaft will turn 4.10 times for every revolution of a wheel).

So I just learned the hard way.....I couldnt read the tags....so jacked up my jeep CJ5 with Dana 44....spun the wheels....tires went opposite directions. I ordered an auto locker, pulled the diff cover and lo an behld....I have a Trac Lok with worn clutches If the clutch pads are no good....a Trac Lokwill behave like its open. If you drive a Jeep.....look at the tag or open the diff BEFORE you buy any parts....the old spin trick isnt reliable every time

  • @chrisfix
    @chrisfix11 жыл бұрын

One of the best ways is to look at the tag because so many companies make different differentials and they react differently. This is specifically for Fords and Mazda but does work for other manufactures. It is only a reference tho. Check the tag on the differential to be sure!

It is def not a method to rely on but if you know a little about your car, you can use it to figure out what kind of diff you have. Also, thanks for the gear info. I dont know if you saw the annotations, but I corrected myself with that info. I misspoke when making the video.

The video instructs us to jack the vehicle up, so that the wheels are off of the ground, and to place the vehicle transmission in "Neutral". As a professional mechanic, I just wanted to note that the transmission does not need to be in Neutral. An automatic transmission can be left in "Park", or a manual trans can be left "in gear". If the vehicle has an "Open Differential", the wheels will spin in opposite directions. Some locking units act like open diffs, until the engine applies torque.

Essentially. A LSD will spin one axle a small amount before locking them both into a posi style axle(That's the "limited" in limited slip). It makes for much better cornering. With a Posi you see a considerable amount of "wheel hop" during turns. I thought they were the same thing too until just recently when a Ford guy called me out when I said my mustang had posi lol.

Did you look for the tag on the diff? Sounds like it might be a limited slip diff or an electronically controlled diff.

Are there any situations on any cars out there that the tires might not spin when the car is in drive or park? Not everyone has this type of diff and I cannot tell you that other diffs will react the same way, but isolating the transmission is just one way to prevent someone who tries this with problems... ya know what I mean

You will get different results. I am not completely sure what would happen because there are so many types of diffs and each one reacts differently. If both tires are suspended and the truck is in drive, you might not have any movement or one tire might move. If both end up moving and you put some resistance on one tire, the other tire might stop moving. It all depends. Def be careful because if anything happens, such as leaving 4x4 on, the car falls off the jack stands, etc, you could get hurt!

You must have a little more wheel speed before the spider/side gear interface will create enough force to close the clutch packs. Until then, it will APPEAR as if it's an open diff.

From watching Engineering Explain's video on limited slip, there needs to be a certain amount of rotational speed before some cams swing out to engage the limited slip. Therefore, this test wouldn't identify it.

This does not tell you if you have a limited slip. you have to spin the tire at a higher revolution then just rotating slowly around. a limited slip will grab when the tire spins at a specific speed or torque to drive the other tire forward

I have an 04 interceptor. All the tags and stickers point to limited slip, but it acts like it's open. I'm not sure if the differential was swapped at some point or not. I don't want to open up my differential to replace the clutch packs if it turns out I have an open diff. Would the wheels still spin opposite of each other if the clutch packs are worn? Or would one just not turn? Thank you.

So in my experience a limited slip differential (LSD), posi, or various lunchbox lockers require a certain amount of rotational speed before the clutch packs engage. You can lift it and spin it as you are you just need to do it with some power. It is dependent onnthe type of clutch pack whether you need a friction modifier. You may also have a limited slip diff, but either due to not having the friction modifier added or the clutch packs which are washers coated in a friction material like breaks are worn down to the point they will not lock the rear reliably, & this is a very common issue. Good try, but there is a bit more to how these work & how we can check for them.

amazing how in all the comments people dont know the terminology. "Limited Slip" is the generic term. GM calls limited slip "Positraction"(posi) Chrysler calls it "Sure-Grip" Ford is "Trac-Lok" all are limited slip. Auburn makes the limited slip called the "Detroit Locker". As opposed to open differential or the always locked up, "Spool". and there are many other brand names for LS from all the others, Porsche, etc, and ways that they work too. I suggest y'all read the wikipedia page, just google limited slip.

I just had an Eaton posi unit installed in my Chevy 10 bolt rear end. With the vehicle up on jack stands, the rear wheels will spin in opposite directions with the trans in neutral. I'm not a professional mechanic so I had an old hot rod shop install it. While the rear was on the jack stands with the front tires chocked, I started the engine and put the vehicle in "Drive". Both rear wheels started spinning forward normally. I then carefully and slightly slipped a piece of wood under one spinning wheel to slow it down and the other rear wheel picked up speed. I don't know if this is a good test. I did Google the Eaton posi website and it did show that this might be a good test when one wheel has more torque than the other. I'm driving the vehicle carefully for now to let everything seat in. Forgot to add that I had a 67 Mustang with a 9 inch rear end with limited slip differential. Both wheels did turn forward at the same time when turning by hand.

Great Vid! I have a question: I have a 3000gt vr4 with a vcu type rear diff. With the car jacked up in the air, when i spin one rear wheel, the other rear wheel doesn't spin. Does this mean my rear diff is not working?

I know mine is a open diff because only one wheel would spin when i got stuck in mud in our backyard to unload pallets from my pickup which unfortunately is only RWD. Think it was last winter and most of the ground was still frozen solid for the most part, and i happened to find the one spot that wasn't i sank into. Was a small hill to gain entry to the back yard, going down it loaded wasn't a issue for some reason. Was when i went to go back up empty that the ground ate my tires.

If you have a Chevy/GMC truck that has a G80 Gov-loc posi unit it will act like it has an open rear if you test it like in this video. The G80 will let one wheel spin first and then will engage the second for posi traction when centrifugal force engages the locking unit. Check the decal in your GM truck glovebox for the G80 code. It will follow the gear code. Example: mine says GT4 G80 (3:73 rear gears , gov-loc posi).

As the surefire way to tell if a RWD vehicle has limited slip or some form of locker is to jack up the rear of the vehicle as those try moving one tire while watching the opposite as if they spin in opposite directions the vehicle likely has open differentials or torsen LSD as lockers would make the tires turn the same direction. Another way to tell what ratio is in the differential is to tape a piece of string to the driveshaft and mark the tires as those would ensure the transmission is in neutral while rotating the tires once while counting how many wraps the string made.

Some LSDs operate from rotational momentum so turning your wheels slow like that will not tell you anything. Some other LSDs (clutch pack LSDs) operate from the thrust of the pinion. The trust from the pinion shoves the ring gear over a little and locks the clutch pack together. Same with the spider gears and the axle gear on the opposite side of the differential. Also meaning that turning your wheel like that doesn’t give you accurate information. However, a full on posi differential will turn both wheels the same direction. At the end of the day, it’s more beneficial to run serial numbers or tags/codes (in this case) to get the most accurate information.

Dear Chris, I did the procedure you mentioned to find out what kind of differential my car has. I would like to mention that the vehicle has Manual transmission with transfer box 4H, 4L. When I did the test 4x4 was off so the vehicle was on 2H. So, both rear wheels were turning in the same direction. So that means the vehicle has LSD. Then, I jacked up one rear wheel and started the engine and I tried to move forward with the first gear. I guess the car was supposed to move forward but it didn't and the lifted wheel kept turning. Is this correct? If yes, what is the purpose of Limited Slip Differential?

ok a friend of mine explained that worn spider gears can cause an open axel to react simular to limited slip obviously not as effective but it has helped me in the snow. darn it another thing needs fixed im restomodding it anyway

A GM g80 locker will spin opposite like your Ford open diff. I just replaced a complete rear axle on a 99 silverado 4x4. When the customer dropped off the axle they bought i checked out before i installed it and i was doubtful at first it was a locker because it would spin opposite when i turn either side. I checked the number code, removed the cover checked the carrier and even called a driveline shop. all three confirmed it was a GM 3:73 g80.

Tony D yes a g80 is open most of the time and will lock only when it senses a slip by the passenger wheel and there is a little clip type thing that locks them good under normal driving but not for any kind of abuse don't go doing donuts it won't take it I know from experience lol

BMW? Does it use a Torsen (True trac) by any chance? There are a few traction-aiding differentials that cannot be tested simply by rotating one tire, the Torsen-style is one.

I have an 88 Olds Cutlass Supreme Classic. It came with a stock LSD. The way I know that is because when it is jacked up from the rear and is in park, I would try to spin the rear wheels but couldn't. When I changed the diff oil, I took off the cover and saw the "S" clip and springs in the diff housing. I didn't pay attention to the tag on the diff. If your vehicle is in park or gear (manual transmission), the park brake off and you spin one drive tire and the other one spins in the opposite direction, you have an open diff or a LSD that has gone bad. If you cannot spin a tire then you have a LSD or Locker.
