A lot of people struggle with fractions, but these methods are great. Thanks for sharing!
This was very helpful and I am excited to share with the kids.
Wow! This is a game changer. I have never used pattern blocks like this! Thank you for posting this mini lesson!

I am so glad you found this helpful Kelly!
I've always used fraction tiles, but I like the idea of using patterns blocks as well. Thanks for the ideas!

Glad it was helpful! I love both manipulatives for different reasons!
Perfect timing. I'm starting 5th grade fractions this week with a group that really struggled with virtual.these past two years. Got my tic tac toe boards ready for kickoff of the unit and my More than half review game ready to give them some initial success. Needed this primer for keeping the end in mind. Thank you for always inspiring me. PS I sent you a FB dm if you ever have time to read it!💕

Hi Sherri! This makes me so excited to hear!! Please let me know how it goes with fractions during the next school year!
This is awesome! Looking forward to one about dividing fractions. Local school just got rid of lots of math pattern blocks and I am the recipient! Yeah!

Oh my goodness Emilia, I am so glad to hear that! That just made my day. :) Are you moving to another long term sub position or are you searching for a permanent teaching job?
Thanks! I'm a middle school teacher and am also teaching 5th grade this year. This is really helpful!

Fractions can be tricky. I like this approach.
Thank you for the clear directions in your video. I teach 7th remediation and I am almost certain that my students have never been exposed to using manipulatives when multiplying fractions. I will be able to use this in small groups!

You're very welcome! That makes me so happy to hear that you can apply this to what you're currently doing for students! Math manipulatives make all the difference!
Still LOVE these videos
3:04 partial groups
9:19 combine both types
The video is great since she uses manipulatives and it gives you a clear understanding. But in high school we don't use much of manipulatives. They just use calculators.

Why did you not simplify the answer of 2/6?

Hi Laura! Thanks so much for reaching out. Simplifying fractions is not part of most 4th/5th grade standards, and in this case the manipulatives represent sixths and not thirds. If you don't already, follow me on instagram @mixandmath and check out my story highlights where I go into depth on my thoughts on simplifying fractions in 4th and 5th grade! Please let me know if you have any more questions! Have a great day!
