MASHUP MATH VLOG-EPISODE 01: Making Fraction Kits
Hands-on activities are an awesome way for students to engage in exploratory activities and develop a concrete understanding of difficult math concepts. Fraction kits have been around for a while and many effective math teachers use them to help their students gain a stronger grasp of fractions. This video demonstrates my approach to creating a fraction kit and was designed to serve as a follow-along activity.
Unlike our animated math lessons, this VLOG will walk you through a hands on, real world math activity that explores fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, number sense, and even as a decimals introduction activity later on. This fun math activity is perfect for homeschool, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and middle school and even high school as well.
The required materials for such math activities include construction paper, markers, scissors, and a ruler.
Our lessons are perfect for flipped classroom math teachers and students. This lesson is aligned with the common core learning standards for math and the SAT math curriculum as well.

I just did this activity yesterday and used the fractions 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/8. There are great games you can play with this fraction kit such as 'cover up' or 'uncover' where you make fraction dice and kids work with a partner to play one of the games. You must have exact fraction to move or can trade equivalent fractions to make a move...kids love it.

Hi Holly! Could you explain the games further? Would love to do them with my students :)
Love that you said to let kids make mistakes becuase they may correct themselves or if not once they realize they have made a mistake you can have a great discussion about what went wrong and what the student can do to fix the mistake. Great video! thank you!
I used this activity the morning of receiving the video. I teach fifth grade, I precut the strips, gave basic directions, listen, execute, and listen again. I did pause the video so everyone could keep up and not get frustrated. I gave NO verbal directions. They really enjoyed the hands on activity, then concluded with the worksheet. Once again, little verbal instructions. I am extremely pleased at the independent learning going on right now in my classroom. We began months ago with a Mash Up math puzzle, it was quite laborious. Now, we do numerous puzzles a week, and they whip right through, making it a competition with the winner receiving a food prize. Thank you for your dedication and creativity to teaching.
You made my heart smile and thank you. Teachers need to find simple ways to teach math that helps students to grasp concepts and not simply leaning how to find the correct answers Fractions are difficult to teach for many of us. This activity is great for all learning types. No more excuses. We will get students to start saying "I love math." Yes we will. Thanks again.
Perfect hands on lesson for conceptual learning. I was looking for something to use with adults and this is just the thing.
I'm 33 years old, and you just showed me how to make fractions make since!! Thank you very much!
I have always preferred using multi-sensory activities to reinforce math topics, especially more confusing ones like fractions. Creating fraction kits have been around for a while and they are super easy, but I like how this tutorial could be used by a student, since it is very easy to follow along. I am looking forward to viewing more of their vlogs as I am always seeking new ideas for helping students.
I've used this strategy as a flap book for several years and found it to be useful, especially for ESE students. It gives a visual, hands-on look at fractions. Thank you!
Great video! I'm a Special Education teacher and I have been looking for a simple (and inexpensive) hands on activity for my students to help them get the concept, and engage them. This is perfect! Thank you!
Great video! I do this activity with my 4th graders every year and it always helps me learn about my students. We have some great discussions. It's a very visual way to find equivalent fractions.
What a great find! I was trying to help my niece and I am way behind in some things 😔 but these videos are very helpful and I look forward to using them to help with my grand daughter when she gets of school age. Thanks so much! You’re awesome 👏🏻 😎
Just came across your videos. As a homeschool mom, with a child struggling in math, I am super excited to implement some of your resources. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your passion and talents.

That was a nice way of teaching fractions. I LOVE this channel because you guys get down on the child's level and ready teach, the lessons break down what a student may think is a complicated problem, but really very is and non-stressful concepts. My son has learned alot. Thanks.

This is great!!! Thank you for the tutoring idea.
Thanks! Going to post this for a hands on learning for my students!!
thank you for the activity :) I was wondering, when it comes to helping a kid intuitively look at something and divide it into 3rds or similar - would it also help to use clear measuring cups of various sizes and asking the kid to fill it half way - then turn it around so they can look at how much that measures out to? Once they're comfortable with 1/2 moving to 3rds? and so on? I'm trying to think of how to help a kid when we say something like ' fold that in thirds and they're different sizes
thank you it made fractions clearer for me !
Love this activity! We will for sure be doing this in for a homeschool activity. Thanks so much!
THANK YOU!!! please continue making these incredible videos. you have no idea how much we appreciate your time making them.

Great lesson! I do a lesson similar to this, but the fraction bars are already on the construction paper. I really like the concept building from the folding and cutting part of this lesson. Do you go back and do sixths and 12ths?
I had Math workshop and this channel and websites were recommended. Glad I found it!!!👍👍👍🕶🕶
The best lesson I do all year about fractions! Kids use these fraction strips all during the year in y third grade class during math lessons!!
I am teaching basic math skills to English Language Learners who are also SIFE (Students with Interrupted Formal Education) and this is a great activity to introduce the concept of fractions! Thank you so much!
You can't possibly imagine how much this has helped me and my sons
This is fantastic! I'm an Education student and I'm working on some lesson plans and I really like the hands on aspect of this vs a worksheet. I also love the growth mindset attitude! Thanks so much for sharing it!

Loved the hands on, visual, and exploratory way of teaching.
im in 6th grade and this helped me with understanding how to do a fractions wall
Thank you so much this really helped us with understanding and studying fractions this morning
SO helpful! i will be doing this tomorrow with my class as i introduce fractions! THANKYOU!
Thank you!!! I am from Honduras, C.A. I am going to be doing this with my students. I love it!!
thank you for the video, i want to try this with my kids right now!
Hi I really enjoyed this video. Great to see the message of visual and hands-on activities to introduce and consolidate concepts in math. I am wondering if you have a preference over using a rectangle over a circle for this task? Obviously easier to measure out a rectangle, would that be all?
Great idea! I'm looking forward to using it. See what questions arise from it.

THANK YOU!! great job. you can tell you love what you do. awe-some
This is always my favourite beginning lesson for my students. they make so many great connections and it really helps them get that base understanding.
Thank you. My daughter struggles with fractions and I will try this with her and see how it goes.
including questioning while doing the activity would be helpful to younger teachers or others knew to the concept being taught. thanks for the video !!!
I like this hands on training. I like the flexibility of the training. Very easy to add different denominators to equal one whole.
I will definitely be using this and sharing it as well. Thank you for being on our side!
this is really neat, looking forward to using it next week :)
I really like this. It's simple and meaningful. Will definitely use this.
I really appreciate your videos. They really help simplify teaching my son concepts he didn't quite understand in his class. He does really well with these hands on activities like this. If I could make a suggestion though I would ask if you could break down your videos in a playlist format to easily find the type of concept you're looking for. So I can know the start to finish progression of which video to start with and understand a concept of before moving on to the next. Another thought is age or grade based playlist to help organize your videos. Thanks for you time and effort!
Thank you so much. This really helped me write my lesson plan on defining fractions. ...xx
Love this, will be using it!
I love this! And asking that question in the middle was clever!
Extremely helpful in my 5-8 grade special education math classes!!! Thank you!!!

Those repetitions have a solid purpose. They build automaticity. When kids get to the real world, they are not going to be able to carry around their fraction strips. They need to be able to do it without the strips.
@Sherlock910
3 жыл бұрын
Well, of course. Repetition has it's place in education and mathematics. But that's not the point of this video or activity. The fraction strip activity is designed to help foster conceptual understanding as students progress through the enactive, iconic, and symbolic stages of development. The automaticity will eventually come, for sure. But it shouldn't be rushed.
Thank you, my 9 year old loved this activity
i love this activity. This will give chn a chance to see for themselves how fractions can be equal. i will do this in a group activity to let them work with each others strength as well as their weaknesses. Isee firsthand how chn can learn from each other. Thank you, hope to get more ideas from you guys soon.
This will be a great resource for my grade 3/4 class and how amazing to have a free resource to accompany it! Thank you.
Love it! I will definitely be using this activity.
I certainly will be doing this exercise with my class on Monday. Really cool! I love it.
Thank you so very much!!!! I use your video each year, but I'm not sure I've thanked you! I am all about visual and hands-on conceptual learning!
Here's something cool, do this project with rice crispy treats using different colors of sprinkles. Have your child cut each strip into a different fraction. :) thanks for the inspiration!

THANK YOU x a million. So happy I came across MashUp Math. I'm a first grade teacher...but currently homeschooling during this Covid-19 Pandemic. I was never great at math, so teaching my third grader fractions has been interesting. I guess he inherited my math brain, lol. Anyway...great stuff. Will definitely share this page.
Love this! I'm a special education teacher looking for great ideas!!!!
I teach someone, she is in 4th grade and able to do adding and substracting fraction. But she got confuse when we come to this concept,
Great idea. Thank you for sharing. These kind of videos are perfect for us as homeschool moms.
Fun video and lesson! I'm looking forward to using this in my math games class.
I am a teacher candidate working on a lesson plan to submit to the credential department to obtain my multiple subjects teaching credential. I thought this was an exceptional activity! I am starting a lesson on on fractions with a fifth grade class, but many of the students are having a hard time conceptualizing fractions (I know this from a fractions pre-assessment that I administered to the students). I really want to try this lesson, because I believe it is fundamental for students to understand unit fractions before moving on to other operations involving fractions. Thank you for such great tutorial!

Great lesson! Thanks for posting!
I will be starting this concept Tuesday and this will be my launch pad!
This was a great video on showing fraction parts. Can anyone tell me what the name of the worksheet is that goes with this activity? I cannot find it.
Thank you! I am going to be working on this with my 8 year old today!
I absolutely love this. I am going to try this with my son and students!!
Thanks for doing this. My two kids (6 and 9 years old) found it helpful.
I use this every year to teach my third graders. Thank you!
Wow, this is awesome!
Thanks for telling me how do I make the best hand-on fractions activity! I appreciate it very much.
Love all your math activities. 2 Truths, What doesn't belong...Kids always expect there to be a right answer.
I liked that the activity was simple and didn't require a lot of materials to make the concept clear
This is awesome! I'm sharing it with my teachers in Tanzania!
Thank you for providing the worksheets. I am a student teacher and FREE resources are extremely helpful. I loved doing this activity with the special ed students.
I like when you said to let them make mistakes because I strongly believe they learn from their mistakes... A wonderful activity. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing these wonderful videos, they are a great help
Love it, did something similar but the simple act of going back to ask about 1/3 gave me more to do.
I love that cute little activity for fractions!
I'm going to use this for online learning with our grade 3's. We have done this at school and the students really like it.
Our class just had a blast completing this activity!
i found this so helpful i have summer activity workbooks and sometimes the topics are confusing but your videos are so helpful thank you sooooo much!
Great Lesson and visual !!!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am teaching summer school to 10 fifth graders who are struggling with some of these concepts. I am going to use your suggestions and see what happens.
Having students this activity will help them understand the concept of what a fraction is and also equivalent fractions. Thanks.
Love this My daughter starts fractions after spring break we will definitely be doing this activity before she goes back
Super helpful, thank you!
What an awesome explore activity. Thanks!
Love this! Going to do this with my Grade 3 children next term!
Nice job, I will be using at home with my children and at school with my students.
Hi. I went to the Math Mash-Up website to access the free worksheet which goes with your vlog, but when it opens it is the emoji feedback sheet. Perhaps your link has the wrong title on it?
Great activity. My class is going to back up and try to get a better understanding of fractions. I think I will try this with them . . .
