YES on the Base 10 blocks! Students pick up the concept so quickly using these manipulatives - especially regrouping. Kids can also draw them quickly if they want (a square for 100, lines for 10s, dots for 1s). Thank you for your videos and demonstrations!

Thank you!! Base 10 blocks a must!! I also have a bead board I use for subtraction. 10 beads on a hanging rod and they are hung to represent top number (beads are removable for ones) minus the second number is written underneath. You can show how we need to borrow a bead rod from tens and break it up to represent new number and now subtract!

Received a set of base 10 blocks for my 8-year-old daughter. She's struggling with addition and subtraction, so I'm curious to see if these help her.

Hello Please guide me about the subtraction method on fingers. We used the method for addition as 3+3 three fingers in my mind three fingers out. What is the best way for subtraction? Please let me know Thanks

Hi Aisha, I believe finger counting isn’t recommended any more because kids memorize addition up to 10 and kids are taught to use math concepts to arrive at the answer. If you must use fingers try the German way of counting - begin with the thumb (for example count 1 on thumb 2 on pointer, 3 on middle, 4 ring and 5 pinky). For 5 minus 3 you would hide your thumb, pointer and middle fingers. You have the ring and pinky fingers remaining and arrive at 2 for your answer. Again, fingers are not the preferred method. Watch more of Susan Jones Teaching videos - she does a great job of explaining things.
