How to Talk to Kids About Substance Use Disorder

One of Dr. Becky's favorite parenting mantras is choose truth over comfort. And when talking to kids about difficult subjects this is especially true. Whether it's substance use disorder, illness, or death, prioritizing truth over comfort is key. Clinical psychologist, Nicole Kosanke, joins Dr. Becky to help us understand how to talk to kids about substance use disorder.

Today’s episode is brought to you by Airbnb: When you travel with kids, you get really good at expecting the unexpected. But Dr. Becky's last family vacation? She didn’t expect it to feel, well, like a vacation. She found an Airbnb with all these really personal touches-games for the kids, fresh coffee for her, and a really comfortable couch that she could sprawl out on and watch Netflix after the kids went to bed. The place reminded her a lot of home, and it made her realize that her place could also make the perfect Airbnb-and so could yours. We’ve put so much work into creating a loving, beautiful home for our families, whether it’s the kid’s playroom, a cozy reading corner, or even our favorite coffeemaker, and those same personal touches could also create the perfect getaway for another family. Plus, it’s an easy way to make some extra income for your next family trip. Your home might be worth more than you think. Find out how much at airbnb.com/host. (airbnb.com/host.)

gee, this seems like a good opportunity to tell us how to talk to our kids about geneocide in Gaza, or is Dr.Becky going to continue to chose comfort over truth? parents can be Palestinian too, don't she know that? i'm not, but i hate how this podcast erases them and their suffering... makes a healthy person want a drink (or something stronger)

The obvious topic of conversation here is substance abuse. Drugs, alcohol, etc. Most if not all of Dr. Becky's episodes contain information that is beneficial worldwide. I do not see a direct correlation between this topic and Gaza and I don't see it as erasing anything. I'm sure if you want to listen to something pertaining to genocide in Gaza there are plenty of people talking about it. If it's something you'd like Dr. Becky to talk about she gives all listeners the option to send in a request for a specific topic..

@@mikalahs977 i have been asking her to address this topic for weeks... maybe months; time has no meaning when genocide is happening so far, i have not seen any youtube content on parenting even acknowledge Palestinian parents, and the correlation is the high number of children being effected. ignoring this for 7 months while a child dies every 10 min in Gaza is a political choice on dr.becky's part, and it is extremely disappointing... i guess she cares more about her sponsors than what's right, which contributes to despair, which statistically leads to drug and alcohol use, obviously

She has info on this on her Good Inside website. Her first article about this is from October 11th 2023. Your whining here is pointless. There is information, you are not willing to get it.

@louisaruth no there's information out there but u gotta put the work in to find it. This topic is about substance abuse not cultural parenting. If ur looking for advice on cultural parenting then perhaps dont listen to a substance abuse audio
