There must be so much room in that bouldering wall! My local is so small that you have like 5 problems starting from any place along the ground.

This is actually quite a complex topic and I assume that you are using the assumption friction is proportional only to the normal force which is only true for some systems. In the case of climbing shoe rubber on rock, the surface area most certainly affects friction. For a good example take tape, if you take a very small section of tape but layer more bits on top, it will still have a much lower friction than a longer peice of tape with the same mass.

@A K That's under a simplified model of friction called Coloumb friction. Geckos certainly don't let Coloumb bother them. Even Ohm's law for resistors is only an approximation to real resistors.

@@provuksmc6619 physics crash course should help. It`s a complex question. Drag the same box on the different sides and measure force.

@@MushookieMan yes, it`s simplified of course. I totally understand that`s an assumptuion, but this is the science we have for the moment :) I suppose bigger muscles and more precise control makes us feel like it`s more friction. Anyways, it`s a discussable question.
