Social media messes with our expectations because it convinces us that we should be doing everything, everywhere, all at once.
But the reality is that we should focus on doing one or two things extremely well, in one place, consistently over a long period of time.
Today on the pod, I talk to Noah Kagan about the type of consistency and habits that lead to wealth.
Noah created his own wealth out of self-belief, learning from failing and being careful with what he gives a f*ck about. Noah’s story is compelling as he shares how he found success over decades, by never ceasing to try.
If you’re looking for some raw talk to get you motivated to go out and do cool sh!t, this is the episode to sink your energy into. Enjoy.

I’m always interested in the take, “Anybody can do this” coming from people who have made it. The big point they always make but breeze over is, “money and fame did not bring me happiness, it actually was one of the darkest parts of my life”. Yet many times, those same people will talk about figures like the Buddha, who went from being a prince to discovering enlightenment when having it all didn’t bring him the peace and happiness desired. Having it all was a prerequisite, and something that it seems many people forget or lose sight of when teaching their points of view. I think that making it to the top is often required and needs to be experienced in order to discover this bliss; that it cannot simply be taught by those who have already trod the path. Hearing these things and trying to take action from down below for years never fills that “but what if I had ____” gap. You need to have had the thing and learned that it didn’t matter. Or perhaps I am the fool who cannot learn from the wise. I don’t know.

Like Nassem Taleb says, "to be a philosopher king, be a king first, then a philosopher. " It's easy to say something doesn't matter once it's already been achieved. The people who don't achieve it take that failure with them the rest of their lives

I think it makes better sense to ask yourself "how much is enough to make the basic financial worries go away? I'm thinking about housing costs, food, clothing, hobbies and entertainments. Maybe a car, if it's paid for in cash. If you can kill your debt, you might find that succes is closer than you think. The fact that someone else is making more money than you, does not reflect badly on you. It's a data point, nothing more. Get a handle on the basic stuff, and you will be doing way better than just getting by. You will find contentment

Well its like you buy equipment for your business, thinking " I will never have to work manually or something"..... people rush too much, too fast.... because fast food industry taught people to have instant food instantly, clicking a button, to have everything instantly.... but relationships don´t work that way, everything goes slow, to teach you to "ENJOY" life and to "ENJOY" a present moment...... As Deepak Chopra said its wrong to live in past or in future.... The ones who live in future and constantly think about future, can never live in present moment....and they feel not satisfied, because when the future event finally happens, they are no there, living in present moment, be connected with the present self... .....their mind is again in the future, What he means is this....... He thinks: When? When? , today?....yes yes yes, it happens today.... I am happy...... wait a minute...I can not be happy today, at this moment... my subconscious mind learned to be constantly in future, every minute of my life..... because I taught my subconscious mind living in future.... so I am not here, I am actually there in future.... I can not be connected today to my true self to my current feelings....... I can not be happy now and enjoy my house and car and my current wife....that I was trying to attract for 5 months, with so much effort, I tried to attract her, and didn´t feel comfortable at the moment and not enjoying present moment...but it dost matter, i would rather sacrifice my current happiness for the future that I dont have time to enjoy.... my mind is constantly planning the future. Wife: Where are you darling? I made a lunch. I hope you will enjoy it. Husband: I am in the future planning our future. Wife: Can you come back for 15 minutes and enjoy a moment with me? Husband: No I have an important work, I have to work for my future that I don´t have time to enjoy actually, but I will come back for one minute maybe if my boss allows.😄 I heard on social media that if a man is connected to his feelings, he is not masculine enough....because he can not focus if he decides to feel some emotion.... Wife: But do you want to enjoy your life right? so you need to feel some feelings and emotions at least. Husband: Well you are right,....Now I see they were lying about masculinity, I don´t need so much emotions I just need a stoic way of thinking....But the stoic way of thinking will not happen if I am affraid of emotions. Do you know what? I decide to feel emotions, ....so I can finally pass them and not suppress them inside.... and as I pass the "toxic" and unwanted and non-productive type of emotions I may finally leave them in the past, because they don´ work for me and my productivity.... ...so now I may enjoy only the good emotions and happy emotions with you, because the unwanted emotions are left in past I feel free to pick the feelings and emotions that suit my true personality, because I may learn to connect with my true self and true self feelings....(not the feelings of my toxic neighbor, his opinions are his, its his journey that he wants to try that he has a 100 percent right to do, he will learn his lessons that have nothing to do with me) and in my future I want to nurture the good emotions, some call them "elevated emotions" like love empathy and joy and gratitude....and i will nurture them with you because you as my loving wife , you are inspiring me... you are polite and kind and understanding.... .... because you are my wife that cares about my wellbeing and my happiness because I realised that my happiness affects your happiness. We may create a happy family together.

A question for any Americans reading this 🙋‍♂️ Is it common in the US for people to brag about things like achievements, success, money, etc.? Lately I've noticed that in quite a few of the podcasts I listen to there's a lot of bragging being done. It could simply be due to the kind of podcasts I listen to (self-development) but it occurred to me that maybe it's common for folks to brag in the US

You only pay attention to, or take advice, from someone who knows what they're doing and has walk the walk. So at least in this case, it's a way of stating they're worth your time. Imagine watching a 'how to riches' video by a guy you have no idea is broke or not.

I think if you're single, not married, with no kids. Sure take your time and become as successful in making much money as possible. But I would like to see more messages of "if you live an "ordinary" life, happy with your job, finding balance between work and family, how to achieve happiness and find beauty in ordinary moments". For more than 50% of the population, by sheer statistics, we're not going to be an entrepreneur millionaire who can afford to take massive risks as we have others to care for. It's getting harder and harder to find KZread channels I can relate with nowadays.

But the Noah Kagan is well off, and for him to say money isn't the answer is like telling someone dehydrated "hey having a lot of water isn't the answer" if you have a lot of it. I'm not saying people should strive to be there best, but if their best is the ordinary 9-5, provide for kids, and retire later on, I think that also should be celebrated and happiness can come from that.

Do y'all find that being ignored is way tougher to deal with than actual rejection? The trying/asking/rejection thing isn't a major issue for me. Getting constantly ghosted or ignored is a major bummer. And not in an emotional or ego way. Whether its putting out a new project, dating/romance, and even self-improvement, lack of feedback due to non-response leaves me in place more confused and directionless. Like how the fuck am I supposed to course-correct if I don't know what I'm doing is right or wrong?!?

As a person who has been blatantly ignored, I learned to focus on those who DON'T ignore me when I approach. It's hurtful, but if someone chooses to ignore me, I feel as though I am dodging a bullet; I do not want 'those' kinds of people in my life anyway. It's important to feel seen and it hurts, but I don't let it get me down because there will always be someone else who will REALLY see me. Don't give up! Just be friendly and try to be a good listener; I find that if you ask someone questions RATHER than talk about themselves, THEY feel seen/heard and will be more likely to reciprocate. You can do it! Just ask questions that make them express themselves and beliefs; trust me, a good listener is rare, so asking questions is a great way to have people feel drawn to you because you're showing interest in them. (Sometimes you can get a narcassistic blackhole who only talks about themselves, you have to sort those people out lol easy way is if they ONLY talk about themselves and hi-jack convos - keep an eye out). Hope this helps

I just didn't follow their scripts and ask for the card right away. I focused on the stories and used the pictures they gave us to get people emotionally invested first -- then I'd ask for the monthly donation. It taught me a LOT about rejection, storytelling, sales, and audacity, though!

I'm a long time fan and I think I've watched all of Mark's recent videos and this is the first one that really fell flat for me. I guess there is nothing super wrong with the video or Noah, but it felt like generic optimism from an eccentric tech bro. I'm happy that he's enjoying his life and I wish him all the best, but there does seem to be an underlying "just be like me" feeling to the whole thing. The conversation doesn't seem like it really gets super deep because I don't think there is an authentic connection. I think Mark's just getting through the interview the same way a late night talk show host would... trying not to be a good human and being respectful even if he doesn't necessarily see the world through this lens. This is admirable, but it doesn't make for a great listen.

It's very much worth pointing out though that when he says "build", I'm pretty sure he is hiring someone to build it. I know a bazillion people like that, 99.99% of them never accomplish anything, and when they do they get the credit for something they haven't built. I think it's all ok, but I think they should specify that they helped build it or maybe marketed the thing, it's very misleading to say he built it.

It's a strange confirmation bias at play. I do think we as a people need to be able to be more risk literate, though

Tim got that from Noah. Give Noah the credit he deserves. He is honestly the smartest entrepreneur/business minded person I know. I loved his book, "Million Dollar Weekend" for step by step actionable tasks in every chapter, fill in the blanks with questions about how well you know yourself and interesting stories about his youth. Great book for anyone wanting a job hustle or financial growth.

I love your podcast and this conversation with Noah Kagan was entertaining, fun, and better than anything on tv. However, I see a lot of “how to become a millionaire” lately on you tube, and how much money people make, etc. It is very inspiring to know how normal people have achieved this status, that takes time, failures, get advice from their experience, etc. However, is this content putting the bar too high for people, making them feeling losers if they do not achieve the millionaire status? And how people that do no so well-paid jobs should feel about this? I work in cancer research, I love what I do, and I am good at it, making discoveries that impact people’s health, I trained hard with a PhD, but yes, I have a shit salary and this bothers me, should I just quit and become a you tuber?

I didn't find bragging. I found years of insecurity that was hard to overcome and how a person becomes successful. Here Noah is talking about his failures in a transparent and open conversation. How is that bragging?

Disagree wholeheartedly. This is not bragging but being proud of how hard you worked to overcome adversity and build up a successful business. Would you rather hear someone talk about how they lack ambition, how they barely make a living, don't take advantage of all that the universe has to offer, cry and complain about how unfair life is? I don't want to hear that. It makes me happy for anyone who can achieve success like Noah. I am motivated to hear his stories.

One of the very Best podcasts out there. However, your dating advice toward the end is actually not going to work. Other dating coaches in the past have tried that technique to make people do crazy stuff in order to help them overcome their social anxiety. It is true that social anxiety is a big component in dating failure. However, it is not the main component of failure in your sex/dating life. Life. The main component of failure in your dating/ sex life uses a different brain pathway than that of social anxiety. The main component of dating/sex failure has to do with the very real feeling of sexual unworthiness that men carry inside them to different degree. You can cure the social anxiety and have them be charismatic to the point that they convince random stranger to good skydiving with them in a chicken suit, I guarantee you 100% when it comes time to ask that 10 out for date they will crash and burn again. This is because social anxiety and sexual unworthiness of two different cognitive pathways

They just yapped and dropped subtle flexes the whole time, only good advice I got out of this was in sales, think about how you can make it a no-brainer for your customer, example was when he was applying for a head of marketing position, he spent 70 hours devising a strategy and said, if you like what I show you, you can pay me for it, if not, no problem
