To sum the video up. Planted grass is better then wild grass. Tests I have run. Rolling after harvest only adds a stage of fertilizer and changes it to the first growing stage. No yield increase over fertilizing normally. Harvesting in March may, August, November. Will result in the highest yield over a season. You must roll (grass care only roller) after harvesting in November for it to be ready to cut in March. Tests that need to be ran. Will mulching a field increase grass yield one cutting or all cuttings after. Will rolling a field before planting increase yield. One harvest or all? Will rolling a field after planting increase yield one harvest or all? Will cultivating increase yield deep ir shallow increase yield. Obviously plow lime and 2 stages of fert do.

I've done some testing myself, and I might be wrong, but as far as I can tell there is no difference between meadow grass and planted grass, as long as the meadow grass is within the dark "field areas" on the map. The meadow grass within the fields will get to 100% fertilized state. The yield is identical (my testing gave a bit more yield to the meadow than the planted, probably just due to minor inaccuracies). If you use the landscaping tool to edit the ground, and then paint a new meadow on top, you remove the "field" shown in the map, and it will no longer be possible to fertilize it. You can see that the darker field is removed on the map around 7:16 in the video. In other words, if the testing area for meadow was untouched before the test and it was fertilized to 100% as well, the difference between the planted grass and meadow would be much less than shown here. Plowing, cultivating and seeding a new field on top of the fields shown on the map seems completely redundant.

great vid for sure bud...but as a real life dairy farmer of old here in the states I have never heard of rolling down grass. lol lol. our pastures here we mow twice a year and we didnt waste comercial fertilizer on grass. we spread manure and slurry for sure. we also dont spread lime on them. grass was one of the crops you forget about till its time to mow, usually about waste high before the grass seeds. owning just over 150 acres of grass pastures we would start mowing early morning even when the grass was wet from the morning dew. and in less than a few days we started tedding...great info for in game tho....

The areas where you crossed the field boundaries with the roller also seem to have picked up a fertilizer state, but they didn't regrow in the video. Your pasture grass had about a 50% yield bonus over the meadow crass (12,000 * 1.5 = 18,000). So watching the video just gave me more questions: 1) It looks like a 25% bonus per fertilizer state. If you've rolled to get to dark blue, does fertilizer have any effect at all? 2) Did liming the field have any effect on yield, or did it just make the "needs lime" go away? 3) In your test, you created a field, so obviously it wasn't in a "needs plowing" state; if you plant grass in a field that needs plowing, is there a yield penalty? 4) When you roll meadow grass, does it ever recover and regrow, or does it just delete the plants? Do you think that's a bug? 5) Two of the grassland rollers have seeders; does having a seeder on your roller actually do anything after the initial planting? This seems like a waste of money if it doesn't. 6) If you roll the field before you seed it, does it keep the fertilizer state like it would if you applied chemical fertilizer before planting? 7) What about the mulchers? Do they do the same thing to a recently mowed grass field as a roller? 8) Does unfertilized pasture grass yield the same as unfertilized meadow grass? 9) Another commenter mentioned a slurry spreader that can add a fertilizer state to meadow grass, and you've managed to change the fertilizer state of meadow grass with a roller (although it didn't regrow in your test); is fully fertilized meadow grass as good as fully fertilized pasture grass? 10) You pointed out the seasonal difference in the appearance of fully-grown grass; is there a difference in yield in different times of year? 11) FS19 had multiple "Ready to Harvest" states with different grass yields, but as far as I can tell, there's only one in FS22; is that correct?

I think, pasture grass is time consuming and adding meadow grass regrows without the need of replanting. So, technically, you have infinite meadow grass once planted. Also, if you plant oilseed radish and once it has grown, cultivate it into the ground and it acts as stage 1 fertiliser. Just plow the field, sees it and let it grow without any fertiliser, it will grow and be beneficial for your yield.

for grass i just use the weeder rake tool after the first initial planting/fertilizing/liming and rolling of the field and it works and a natural fertilizer as well as pull weeds up for every cut afterwards, cause it usually stays at 50% fertilized state after the planting of the grass. i don't worry about getting the grass turning to silage cause i use the fast baler that wraps the grass to turn into silage bales, and it only takes a week in game for it to work since it takes about a month or 2 for the grass to grow back to be cut again. and it counts as regular silage as well so saves a bit of cash in the long run.

  • @Plisko1

Something that can mess up measurements is that grass has a hidden growth stage. Or maybe you could call it an "early harvest" option. You can harvest every 2 months. It says "ready to harvest" at that time when you look at it. BUT, unlike other crops, there is one more stage if you wait another month for a total of 3, you will get a whole lot more. Maybe 30% more... on top of all your other growth bonuses. Meadow grass also does this but it never seems to have the yield of tended grass.

As far as I know, where I live in Switzerland, farmers don't plow or cultivate grass fields and seed them anew, but they certainly fertilize them with slurry and manure, because they have it. They wouldn't spend money on machines and more time to take care of the grass, because similar to the Erlengrath map, it's everywhere and of natural good quality. I find it peculiar that FS doesn't allow to fertilize it, maybe it's just to give people more things to do.

On this map I run a small-ish dairy. As of right now I am mowing large amounts of grass (all steps for TMR, I have some straw in a field from barley) is it really worth all the extra effort of plowing out these fields and constantly maintaining them? At the larger scale this seems less efficient (moving hundreds of thousands of L of grass).

In your video you rolled after planting the seed and I have a question. The roller has the option to squish small rocks down so you don't damage you planter. If roll before planting to squish small rocks do I get the Yield bonus. If not that would mean I would roll to squish, plant then roll again after planting. Hopefully you might have an answer to my question on this. Hopefully I get the yield improvement before planting.

@@Scroft Concerning the "field/soil roller", how can you use this for the 5% bonus after the first harvest? There are no rocks, you haven't just planted so seedbed state won't happen. To me, using the roller is a one time 5% bonus on first harvest, and then you will never get it again. The only way I'd be convinced is with a much larger test (to positively conclude the 5%), on two fields which have already had first harvest, one you soil/field roll even though you get no texture change, and the other field you don't.

I'm only 9 min in but I think the yield from the planted grass is going to have to be much much better to cover the expense of all the extra machinery, lime, seed, and fertilizer... and extra time... ... I won't bother with the math but getting only a 3,000 unit increase seems a bit short. Does the grass grow faster than meadow grass? I'm still back on FS19 and I'm just doing passive research watching how to videos
