Shallow Cultivation (disc harrows and some cultivators) = preps field for seeding, no small or large stones, increases weed growth. This means you don't have to hire a stone collector and field prep is more straightforward BUT you probably spend a little more money/time on weeding if you have that switched on. I shallow cultivated and then seeded a field waited just one day and the weeds were already above 50%. Normally theyd grow slow but I hadnt tested wether a dragged weeder would work. Likely outcome is that shallow cultivation is quicker for planting but the weeds grow so fast that you spend a lot on Herbicide as a trade off. It all really depends what you can afford. Some power harrows can be attached to seeders or even attached to the front of tractors so you can cultivate and see at the same time, like a makeshift direct drill. It's great that we have this wide variety but the tooltips / help info aren't exactly explanatory of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of field prep.

So essentially from what you're saying, what Farmer Cop tested, & from my own gameplay, we trade stones for weeds assuming weeds are enabled. So if weeds & periodic plowing aren't enabled, should be able to use a shallow cultivator to avoid rock damage & have the least maintenance, while being faster than some of the other equipment. Nice, but can be boring for a small farm & a bit more convenient if playing a very large operation.

  • @olympiad013

With the subsoiler the weeds jump to 100% growth and spraying only reduces it to 50%, if you prepare the seed bed they grow to 50% and you can get it down to 0%. Much better to use a plow and get no weeds IMO

I think there should be a min till (minimum tillage) bonus. Like if you used disks or maybe the shallow cultivator for 3yrs without using others you would get a 10% yeild bonus, because the low disturbance (working only on the first few inches/centimeters) preserves the bacteria in the soil and keeps a nutritious seed bed. Whereas with plowing and cultivating etc. you are moving large amounts of soil and disturbing the ground, you dont give the ground the chance to build as good nutrition. The disadvantage of min till in fs could be that you need to use herbicide twice, once after agitating the ground with disks and once when sown. Keep in mind I don't think direct drill should have the bonus because you save time, and from personal experience irl, direct drill brings up large amounts of stones. Idk just an idea.

TBH, from a "realism" perspective, I'm kinda sad periodic plowing doesn't work for ALL fields like it did in 19 and prior. It was something to plan for, and made sense, that after a certain number of harvests your field would need "rejuvenation" by plowing, deeply turning the soil, versus just skimming over the top with a cultivator over and over and over.

Hello FC, hope you are doing well. I noticed that my new fields on no man's land where showing being in the 2nd stage of fertilizer before I even put any fertilizer down. The field was all grass that I mowed and collected before using a subsoiler to create my fields. I am using the create fields with cultivator mod, version 1.0.1.0. . I created a new game on Elmcreek with no mods at all. When use the plow to create a new field on lot 56, that field shows fertilized at 50% when I look in the map it shows that field with the first state of ferritization. When I ran the plow through the unharvested field of oats the area the plow went through showed a fertilize % of between 10 and 20%. I got the same results when I used the subsoiler on the existing field. When I turned the mod back on and created a new field with the subsoiler I got the same results as the un-moded test with the plow. Looks like the made the change after your video but I haven't yet been able to find it in the patch notes.

The ingame "cultivators" are considered to be chisel plows (they chisel and turn over the topsoil) The ingame "shallow cultivator" is more than likely to be a field cultivator. The big stones happen with how often you work the field. So for example; if you plough once, then cultivate... The rocks get bigger, regardless. If you mulch, plow and then cultivate the field will produce "Large Rocks" purely because of the fact you have worked the field 3 times. I figured that out the hard way 😅🤣

It might be worth a comment with the mulcher you said you testing it doesn't add the field to a ready state which is correct but your testing with the Broken Seeders as they have a power harrow that is currently not working so it would be worth saying tested with the seeders power harrow turned off as when giants fix these it could give the illusion it does.

If you mulch and then plough would you in effect get a 20% yield increase?

  • @FarmerCop

    @FarmerCop

    2 жыл бұрын

No, it would be a 5% yield bonus for mulching and you would avoid the -15% yield deficit, its important to note that by plowing you just bring the yield up to 100% as opposed to 85% and by mulching you could go from 100%yield to 105% just as fertilizer would bring you (per fertilizer state) from 100% to 123% yield

Mulching is needed tho for a 100% bonus to yield.

Thanks for the video, great details for a NooB like me. Would you do a follow-up on the BEDNAR FB3000-TO6000-PT6000 please ? It has the subsoiler which lifts the rocks, has a cultivator and then a roller to re-bury them. It also has a fertiliser option (but couldn't get that loaded no matter how hard I tried). It's really expensive, but if you can do all these functions in one, it may be worth it. Not sure. Thanks again.

YES PLEASE! I saw the title and I'm in! I had this problem last night. I used a shallow cultivator I guess and it wouldn't let me plant with the seeder I had early on. Do you happen to know which of these actually counts toward cultivating? Because the shallows don't apparently. I know regular cultivators and subsoilers do. I think disc harrows too.

From what I remember during farmcon the developers said that's different plows have different yields. A normal plow will give the highest yield whereas cultivators will not That's why you have different ground textures for each field prep device

I don't feel like the stones are functioning properly in the game yet. The roller is supposed to push the small stones back under the soil, yet it doesn't appear to function that way (from my experience).

Roller pushes the small stones under and can only be done after a cultivation stage, if you seeded it the stones are locked in. Will need a stone picker to remove large ones. RIP my harvester.

Very good video and I agree with the periodic plowing, it is a huge step forward. But at the same time they also made three steps backwards with the direct seeding and as a licensed farmer I'm very pissed off about that. For example, the first three seeders don't allow direct seeding. But they literally are power harrows with a drill hooked up. You can't even separate them anymoore and just use the power harrow to cultivate like in fs 19. You have to buy the exact same power harrow separately and that is just steaght up stupid.

Ploughing gives a bonus which you lose by cultivating, but does your environmental score go up by not ploughing, would this counter the loss?

So in order of machinery use is 1) mulcher, 2) plower, 3) cultivator… optional 4) shallow cultivator… and then final with the seeder machine … is this correct?

All of those matter. Width means less passes which means less fuel/wear/time/wages (therefore less cost) Cost, well that's kinda key to the game, you can expand quicker if your profits are high Speed, again this means wages are less and time reduced. Sure time isn't as important as fs19 because of the seasons but you don't want to sit at 4mph doing 10 acres especially paying 1$ a second for a worker.

Should do a test on workers, their cost per hour if it's different if your just traveling , transporting or doing field work. Idk cause I feel they are very costly compared to fs19. I would like the details on it and am much to lazy and would be good content I believe lol.

i posted in the stream and doing so here, cause it needs attention to i think. and i'm not big enuff to make a complaint lol. when using the field markers on the side of planters etc.. it will plow up a row of rocks. so you have to plant a row, then pick up a row of rocks then plant that row and do the same.....very annoying or just dont use field markers which i've gotten used to... so sad.

Well either turn fieldstone off, or just leave them til the next time you clear the field. A couple small strips of stone isn’t going to ruin your whole field.
