Loved this test video in FS19 and now for FS22. A couple thoughts. 1) Could you change the terrain to dirt or grass. I have heard rumors that the terrain impacts traction and I am thinking the asphalt gives all tires a somewhat equal playing field (pun intended). 2) I think having a higher horsepowered tractor would test traction more. An underpowered tractor won't get the wheels slipping as much as a higher hp tractor. In a nutshell: High HP towing a big load up a dirt or grass hill. Or High HP towing a big cultivator through a ploughed field! Thanks for all your content FC!

You want the tires to be the weakest link in the test. The weakest link in this test was the tractor engine, and that was a constant.

I agree on the notion of this being done on a plowed field. Also a test between brands, on the top performing setup, perhaps. Great testing video!

I was recently down to 4km/h cultivating a big field when on the uphill run on standard tyres, having the mobile workshop installed I changed to duals and gained 2km/h to 6km, thought I'd try wides with weights and got an amazing 9k. Beware, if using courseplay and you change configuration of the tractor using mobile workshop it will delete the courseplay course so save it first. After some more experimenting not all makes of the same style tyre work the same, bkt will surprise you compared to the big names.

I haven't noticed much different in traction for changes in state except plowed I used little electric tractor and was struggling couldn't get anywhere in plowed ground then switched to duels and worked fine after changed was acting like was high centered not as much like stuck so I think it could be the small tractor size plowed land makes tractors tip and shake like a built in mechanics

I feel like the better tires help me more when it’s wet. Also I feel like pulling across a field would have different results. It could just be all in my head though. Thanks for another awesome video!!!

Might be a little complex, but a front weight guide/test would be nice to go with this. From my own experience of FS22, I've seen that a larger weight can sometimes greatly help, and sometimes makes things way worse. IRL, the front weight should be proportional to the trailer type and load, but I can't really tell for sure if the game models that correctly. By trailer type, I mean, how much weight is placed on the trailer's wheels vs weight placed on the hitch (lifting the front end up). I use JCB Fast Trac's a lot on my farms, where the balance is perfectly in the center by design. So if I get the front weight wrong, I lose the front end on a corner. Which is a major pain when you're carting silage bales across the map, to a sell point. Maybe 2 tests, a cornering at speed test (with trailer), and an implement pulling test?

seems that the weighted set up on the wheels works better with the lowered cultivator, so rule of thumb would be Weighted for anything being dragged through the dirt, for example that would be Subsoilers, ploughs, Cultivators and maybe seeders and planters. pretty cool and thanks for doing the testing.

Interesting. Also, I was thinking the duals were more for spreading weight OUT on the ground to avoid compacting the fields and sinking in too much IRL vs just increasing pulling speed. So maybe that's why the duals didn't speed it up as much in this test. I wish the game had more realistic traction and such in the fields, like where narrower tires might sink in or just spin, and/or compact the soil more, so you'd have to actually determine if weights are better (for pulling in slicker mud), or duals are needed (for protecting the field while working it).

The only criticism I would have from the test method, is you may want to run each test 3 times and use the average from the group of three, and definitely wear a lab coat 🥼 However I also understand this is done out of curiosity, and that would triple the time needed to perform this test. Thanks FC for being Dr.Farmer Cop for the day. I suspect the variations in the times may have more to do with the weight of the tractor than traction, the wheels add weight, I don’t think friction is necessary modeled in the physics engine.

It'd be interesting to see this test as far as Traction on say Plowed ground to see if width/duals play more grip difference there. The other thing I'm really puzzled is, why would Front Duals make such ah difference. I made a modded version of the Case IH AFX Connect Magum that has Duals on Front but not rear and it's far better than Duals on Rear only... So seems like FS22 calculate pulling power based more on Front wheels than Rear...

I believe the last set of tests I saw, there was also a difference for with/without front weight. I believe the general conclusion is that more surface area gives better traction, but adding weights front and back made a difference too (especially the front weight) - if you don't have the weight to complement the surface area you can end up just slipping the wheels. Not sure if surface type makes a difference or not - concrete vs mud (vs wet mud??!!) But also if there is no wheel slippage, then adding more rubber doesn't make much of a difference - there was possibly no traction issues with the heavy rock trailer, so it didn't matter if you had lots of rubber, or more weight!

I think the test going uphill on pavement is an equal struggle for the same tractor with different tires configurations. So equal struggle, equal results. I've seen comments where people are saying use this or that machine. That only tests the different machines, we were testing tire traction. I don't know if this is a solution to that problem, but my thought is to find a piece of farm equipment that weighs a lot, and a tractor that barely fits the requirements. Then perhaps it might struggle more in the fields with different tire types. Thus, showing an actual gain in performance. But again, if the tractor still tops out on speed it will have no effect. So, I don't know. But I love the attempt at finding a difference.

Usually the wides are not meant for better traction but for distributing the weight better. Mid-width tires have good traction, but depending on the terrain, because they have a smaller contact patch they can dig into the ground and not pull that well. Also IRL wider tires reduce soil compaction when pulling heavier equipment (less soil compaction can yield better plant growth). Same logic applies to double tires. What does improve performance when the tractor is losing traction is the grove pattern and depth. The softer the ground you want more groves to dig into it and pull you forward, but on hard surfaces more ground contact is better. Reason why on airports you will mostly see car like tire patterns on tractors (almost slick tires). All of this is talking about real world, not the game, but that is what simulators are aiming for right? 😅

Use a high HP tractor in cultivated ground with an extreme load. Then tire slippage or traction would show better.

In that test I think it was the engine being small and not pushing the tires to hold traction that made the difference be not much. Personally I have noticed in plowed fields pulling seeder than tire size makes a difference.

For the next time you do these tests, count the frames/time in post and do a voice over with the results perhaps.

I think you need the biggest engine, I never saw very much slip, seemed like it was more or less just maxing out horse power

Pro tip, on GPS you don’t need to delete the leading zero on the heading. 090 is the same as 90.

leave 0, and press alt+end(?) to rotate by 90.

I can certainly say wider tires give better traction, especially in fields pulling a plow up a hill. Duals are even better. I also like duals when using front loaders for more stability. I don't like duals when trying to fit in tight places.

Test going through plowed and cultivated fields?

Try it without a front weight next time maybe the weight is kind of pulling the tractor down hill

Perhaps wider tires save fuel? Because more grip/less slippage means more engine power actually goes into propulsion.

Also maybe weight based but I had some extreme hillside area (literally flatten ground straight down status) and some tractors will slide while side hill (unrealistic mind you were talking almost 90 degree slope) but weight seemed to make difference heavy tractor xerion with weights slid when turning vs other vehicles pickup and skid steer could drive without sliding downhill but was tracks vs tires tracks slid but was 3600 lbs weight added on tractor vs pickup and skid steer no weights

No mention that HP and Torque add to the pulling times?

They matter a lot. To me... emotionally... I love big tires 😍😄

I use wide or twins more when I need turning stability. Tipping over isn’t fun

Maybe pair a tractor with an implement it can barely handle. The tires going uphill might make a difference and reach normal operating speed versus below operating speed. So basically, an implement that needs 160 HP and you have 160-170 HP on the tractor. I am sure the dual wheels could reach a higher speed under these circumstances. Just a thought.
