I have a mod pasture with auto water and i bought 1 milk cow and one meat cow both small. When full can have 25. I feed hay bales. I will wait until they grow and reproduce and keep feeding hay. When the cows start to produce milk i can sell the milk and i can sell the meat ones too and thanks to this video i know the right time. I will only use hay because it's easy and free to get,no need to bother with TMR since i need hay, sillage and mineral and a mixer...more expenses and milk cows will produce more as they get old. If milk is not good i work with meat cows and sell the others. I have sheep and horses too.

i did this kind of stuff as a kid. it not complicated just time consuming. i def appreciate the people who do this for me now for youtube. i not a fan of the internet....... but it does make gaming easier when it comes to stuff like this. i used to play original gran turismo. i had a notebook full of laptimes, setups and each car i ran on tracks. i spent im sure 100s of hours just running practice laps each track and playing with setups..... 20 some years later i still got the notebook just for laughs. that said my uncle has ps4 gran turismo game. he wanted better setup. i did quick search online within 5-10 mins we had car running a lot smoother. obviously each person has dif style etc so dif setups pref in the final but we had good baseline to work with at least.

Cows are immensely profitable in the right combinations. Two decently sized fields. One for grass, which you can mow 3x a year when seasons are turned on to produce hay and silage and one for a straw yielding grain (preferably barley because of the high yield per acre). Fed the cows tmr and either sell the milk or buy a dairy production to turn it into cheese and/or butter. Get a chicken barn with just enough chickens so the yield of barley feeds them for a year and sell the eggs and buy or build a BGA for the manure and slurry. They fit together so well.

I did this testing way back when, nice to see it's all the same - one way to game things, is to have a general production hay barn, and a ready for sale TMR barn - move the cows you plan to sell to the TMR barn the day before you sell them (the increase is immediate) and gain the value as if you'd fed them TMR for life. Incidentally you could run a grass barn and put the kiddies in there, until they get to milk production stage (or breeding stage!!).

@FarmerCop first off, much respect for the time and effort on a video and calculations like this. i've dabbled with similar things before and would like to discuss things i noticed that i disagreed with. I'd be more than happy to discuss numbers for cows or any other animal in depth as well if desired. your tmr formula calculation has a minor error in it, largely affecting your profit results, your calculation shows silage*percent + hay*percent + straw+percent, resulting in 229 per 1000L, correcting the straw portion to Straw*percent should equal 173 per 1000L which means you're about $350 high on total feed for dairy cows, and $400 high on beef cows. in my experience as well, you can min/max your tmr mix to 50% hay, 20% silage, and 30% straw (tested on console, all mods off) which would be about $134 per 1000L resulting in almost $600 cheaper feed on dairy cows, and $800 cheaper on beef cows @1:20 you mention cows not needing straw. in info i've found from other people, and tested myself, not giving dairy cows straw, results in a multiplier of .9 on milk productions, so for hay fed 108 w/o straw vs 120 w/straw. or tmr fed 135 w/o straw vs 150 w/ straw. also, from what i've seen cows produce the same amount of slurry w/ vs w/o straw, but obviously only produce manure w/ straw. At adulthood a dairy cow consumed 95L of straw in return for 15L of milk and 200L of manure per month also, your discord link in your profile shows as an invalid invite, if yours is still up and running, i'd love being able to be part of a community where things like this can be discussed in depth

Awesome job!! That is the reason I almost always feed my cows hay only. I have an idea for a follow-up or part 2 on cows. I know on base game, the best time to sell to get the max profit (before the prices starts dropping) and get the max calves is 36 months, but I have yet to learn what it is with the enhanced animal mod. So, it would be a really interesting video that I don't think anyone has done yet, is using the enhanced animal mod and accounting for the best time to sell them but account for when calves are born and what is the most profitable way to feed them.

  • @vninga

In enhanced animal TMR most likely beats hay cows by quite a bit. With enhanced animal mod(EHM) you don't want to sell your dairy cows for profit but rather when their milk production decreases. In EHM cows eat a lot more feed, but produce a ton more product (milk in this case). In EHM I was making about 2-3k in milk per cow per day using TMR on normal. Farmers spreadsheet is based around selling at 27 months because that's the most profitable for base cow price, but that really only applies to beef cattle since I don't care about the dairy cow price rather than my daily milk production. I tend to sell closer to 4-5 years, because the first 16 months of a cows life cost me 30-40k in milk profit alone. You better off selling all calf's and buying adult cows from th store when you need to swap old cows out.

I started your recommendations about 10 days ago. Hay for cows, TMR for dairy, which I was doing already. After about 3 to 4 days, playing, I noticed all my cows in #1 to #8 pens (Texas) all had 0% health. They were on Hay only. I had to go back to TMR. I had already started to divest myself of extra TMR ingredients, silage, and straw. I'm cutting TMR a little close on supply. Their eating almost 325k per day. It might be cheaper to feed hay, but I don't see how if they are at 0% health. This video is the only one I have had an issue. Other than that, good info.

I will be interested to see sheep as I did that test myself. I wish we could distribute the products like factories without a mod though. I also did so fun calculations when it comes to time spent making a crop vs profit. I didn't account for turn around time because that can vary per equipment, but I might add a 2 second penalty per. I did it for a ha that is 100x100 to see what is the most profitable per ha for time spent. Sure potatoes are the highest per ha but you have a 6m planter vs Oats were you have a 12m direct drill that also fertilizes. A 3m harvester vs a 15m harvester. Anyways, thanks for the video.

However on your spreadsheet I found an error (probably a fat finger error). On the profit sheet in cell J39 you are adding the straw figures instead of multiplying like you did for Silage and Hay. Which ends up changing things just a bit 🙂 for the TMR figures.

Using the expandable pasture mod, i use a single pasture that can hold 2000+ cattle, and a 200 animal barn. You dont have to feed the cattle until 1 month before you want to sell, being that they dont die but gain age. Pull what you want to sell a month early to the barn and with TMR they are 100 percent health and can sell at full price.

Just want to point out that this depends on the map/barns your playing/using. Some maps/barns, have different % for different feeds. UMRV Dry creek farm barn has silage available as feed on 80% (same as hay in this test) , but hay is on 70%. If you are feeding them hay on that map in those barns, that means that their health will stay at 0%, they will not reproduce and will milk less. (Results from my current UMRV hard setting playthrough).

That money adds up and compared to solid or liquid fertilizer, it is way better to sell as much of the slurry/manure as possible. Reg fertilizer is way cheaper by comparison plus digestate is a free by product but you can sell that too(?) Anyways thanks for this test and look forward to more

So overall it is more profitable to do milk cows by a long way if you keep them past your suggested sell date since you get multiples for free since it doesn't cost you anything for the new cow they have. So after a few years and all the extra cows for free the profit must really start building up rapidly especially if you build other cow homes and fill them with the birthed ones.

There should be a daily fee for dairy cows. Beef cows require less attention per day and fewer supplements. Dairy farming is for mega farms these days. Disclaimer: Maybe this went over my head. I'm new to the game and have not done any ranching yet. Trying to do some research before I invest in cattle on FS22. The small boost you get from having a calf on TMR is erased after the second month? What is the point of TMR with beef cattle? Second gen. calves have a small boost too. Does that get erased by the 3rd month, too? Or does it make sense to finish a cow on TMR at reproduction (27 mo.) to get that small bonus? How many calves can 1 cow have? Does the cow value go down after a certain amount of time? Like I said. Maybe I missed something.

Really you could call this a game error. I’m sure the intention is that if you feed them better, you make more money off what they produce. Perhaps an accountant needs to go over this game so as to make it “add up”. 😅. I’ll be parking the TMR mixer. Which while fun to use at first, becomes a real chore after a while. I guess like real farming. Lol

I do like the concept, but they need to make it more realistic. You should be able to make tmr, or even just feed silage. They should also make a section for feeding grains as a supplement. There should be a daily hay requirement and then you supplement a ration per head of alfalfa, tmr, corn, ect. That would be awesome, because we feed hay and supplement with alfalfa or grain. I really hope they come out with calves in the next game, so you can go through realistic cycles.

Farm supplies production. Grass feed is better than a tmr. Why the game doesn't reflect that is beyond me. This factory makes hay and silage from grass like real life. Then makes tmr from those. So lets use the 1k cow pen for example. 1k are your breeders you feed. You have pens 2-4 are hold overs for 36 months of free grazing you don't need to feed. Pen 5 is your feed lot to get health up for sale price. So for mowed grass you get a tmr quality price for your beef prices. Side note: why isn't there a tmr production that uses poplar?
