The tip about using your hand to direct your client where to look is genius. I used to do it for makeup applications but never thought to use it in photography!

This is super helpful. I’m just feeling super hopeless with my insta portfolio because of lighting and the clients I’ve been getting. First, I live in Minnesota. So it’s dark and cloudy almost everyday during the winter. It really starts getting dark around 4. But during the day time, it’s looks like London. drab and gray. So mostly I have to use a ring light. The ring light absolutely sucks. With and without the flash. ALSO during the winter, we get lots of clients who want to get in and want to get out. No styling, just blow dry quickly. Obviously, if you’re a good hair colorist you don’t need to curl the hair. I remember my instructors telling me “people curl the hair to compensate for shotty coloring technique” which I sometimes agree with. But I really want some quality photos for ONCE, and it seems like that just won’t happen till the spring/summer time. Instead, I’ve been having to take videos of them in my chair and just hope that works out well.

Beccastyles 06_11 do whatever you can to avoid a ring light! She talked about this is the video and she is so right! Natural light is best! I would take literally a day testing out photo spots in and around the salon! And find your favorites! That way at any time of day you have a go to area to bring your clients and don’t have to be frustrated trying to find light at the last minute ❤️

@@LaurenFrancesHair yes, I agree and I do use our natural light whenever possible. When I work in the evenings is when I will have to use the ring light. I should've clarified that.

When I do hair up at my mums I use her wall paper and a ring light the quality of light at my mums house is terrible and this is the best solution. I used to put a white bed sheet on my door in my flat to create a plain background. I take a mini ring light and put on my phone so to take that out with me and that works great. I did have a Samsung s9+ but had so many issues with it I ended swapping it with the apple XR it’s a great phone takes good photos it’s just it can’t do portrait on hair I’m hoping they will do it on a update soon. I agree invest in the best camera that’s what I did. your tips for a ring light I do that. Great tips

eyelightangel when you don’t have a clean background, the best is to create depth of field or “blurry background” you can make the perfect background everywhere ❤️
