How to Swim for Beginners | Learn to Swim in Lockdown | How to Hold your Breath Beginner Lesson 2

In this week’s video I will be showing you how to teach your child to hold their breath and submerge their mouth and nose in the water comfortably for 3 seconds. Last week I was showing you how to teach your child to put their mouth in the water and this week we will be building on from that. If you missed last weeks video, please clink on this link.

Lesson 2: Holding your breath and submerging nose and mouth
Activity 1: How to hold your breath
Step 1. Teach your child to suck in air and hold in their mouth for 3 seconds
Step 2. Check that the air is not escaping from nose (if it is pinch nose)
Step 3. Breathe out
Activity 2: Hold breath and submerge nose and mouth for 3 seconds
Step 1. Take a breath
Step 2: Look down and place nose and mouth in the water
Step 3. Look up and exhale
Repeat these exercises 5-10 times each day this week, either in the bath or somewhere at home using a tub of water. Teaching your child to old their breath is something that must be done in a relaxed way. You can distract them by counting, also challenging them to hold for longer and longer each time. This exercise is recommended for children over the age of two years. I would not have them hold their breath for longer than 5 seconds each time.
Learning how to hold your breath is an important skill when it comes to swimming, but as you can see you don’t need a pool to be able to start learning how to swim.

That is awesome how much you can do at home to learn how to interact with water. Thank you, Carryn. I wish I knew that tips when my kids were small. I will keep them for my grandkids ))

Have you ever thought about doing online coaching on youtube for advanced swimmers with dynamic apnea training?

Hi thanks for your comment. I have never thought about this but maybe it is something i should consider in the future. Do you do this style of training?

@@TheSwimTeacher Yeah but because of the pandemic we haven't been able to do it properly so it would be extremely useful to have it online instead!

But for how long to hold it. A lab in the pool is not 3 seconds it’s much longer what about 30 seconds?

If I was swimming a lap of the pool I would probably not hold my breath the whole way. I would do the bubbles and then come back up for air a few times. Do you already know how to do the breathing technique?

If you are holding your breath water won’t go up your nose
