A tip to make the video easier to understand, dont change camera angles in between the stroke. Show the complete stroke from one angle then switch to another angle.

I agree. The edit does look cool but from a pedagogical perspective it's confusing with the change of angle between a single stroke.

To me this is the most intuitive stroke of all. Breathing is effortless because the upward thrust of the pull phase naturally makes your head surface to take a breath.

Also the most demanding technique, I never really worked on it much growing up and it limited my ability in 200 & 400 medley ... As a masters swimmer I am actually faster at breastroke now. Sub 2:40 200m the last 2 years with a pb of 2:37 (25m pool) at age 41. Keeping the knees together got me from around 1:30 for 100m in the 400 medley to about 1:23 ... working on sub 1:20 to get me under 4:45.

@@realalbertan I love the 100 breaststroke, it's one of the few swimming events in which I'm better than average. That being said, I can't swim the 200 breaststroke at all. I find it weirdly difficult to pace in breaststroke, like I have 3 speeds, snails pace, moderate, and all out sprint.

I have been the same! I learnt this stroke when I was in primary school and I always got told to sort of bring my legs up together, nore like knees towards my stomach, then kick them out wide like into a circle and back. And my arms were hands together, back of hands touching, then push the water out and do a sort of circle type thing with my arms too. No wonder I've always been terrible at breast stroke 😂😂

Timing varies slightly from swimmer to swimmer, some videos tell you that you should start the kick phase once you have fully extended the arms, some like this one show that the swimmer starts the frog kick as soon as he's done with the pull. I've been revising my breaststroke technique and trying to find the optimal timing by starting the kick earlier (like in this video) or later, still I haven't understood which is better for me. I saw videos that have slightly different timing. If you watch breaststroke champions from underwater in slow motion (there are some videos out there) they don't have the exact same timing. Maybe it's personal.

@@frauzehel6067 Free is my best stroke, followed by back, then breast, and butterfly is my weakest--mostly because I keep shoving water into my face and can't catch a breath. But I'm getting better with practice!

Try the 1 pull 3 kick drill. Do one pull then while you kick focus on keeping your hips high in the water. Also, the higher you head comes up, the harder it is to keep higher hips, so try and keep it low as best you can. But the 1 pull 3 kick drill really helped me. Also the more flexible of a lower back you have, the easier it will be.

This is my favorite too. And IMO, the next most taxing after butterfly (especially at competitive effort). Since it’s very inefficient and momentum driven to propel forward at speed. I easily get my HR to my peak (170 ish) when doing it at best effort.

Thanks for breaking this swimming style into logical pieces, helps a lot in understanding the mechanics of this stroke, however since focusing on my leg work and starting to push harderI have started to encounter knee pain, so I had to move to the butterfly kick to ease the pain. Do you know what may cause that or how can I prevent that? It is annoying and it actually pushes me away from the breast stroke style. Any advice would be more than welcome! Thanks!

Hi guys. Trying to get into swimming for cardio and weight loss because I have injuries to my knees and legs. I am a little confused on the timing of the kick to the stroke. Would you recommend I just master the freestyle first and eventual move on to the breaststroke?

the kick comes as you begin your arm recovery freestyle requires less coordination between arms and legs

Think of pulling your arms and legs in at the same time. As your arms scoop around, your legs do too.

I’ve always considered swimming as my nemesis. i’ve never been a strong swimmer and for some odd reason when i’m in the pool my mind becomes obsessed with how fast or slow i am going. I love the breaststroke but can never seem to master the kick. Coordination of everything including breathing has always been a challenge. Realising now as i take to swimming again (not to be defeated) i can actually use aids to isolate and work on the movements. I think the dolphin kick with BS would really work for me! thanks 🙏

Which is more important stroke - with legs or with hands, or is it both equally? I was practicing and I found that if emphasize it on the legs, I'm faster. I wasnt diving with the head though and didn't see any instructions on how to swim breaststroke correctly.

You can but this is more about creating a more rounded swim program. Breastroke builds body awareness in the water that most triathletes need to work on.

I play around with my breast stroke timing quite a bit. In one version I insert a quick dolphin kick after I straighten out and just before I pull... at least I think that's what I'm doing. It seems to add a little speed to my laps. Maybe it wouldn't be allowed in a race?

    (1) Is it a good exercise of the kick when you disable your hands by hold your palms joines together on your lumbar spine? (2) does the exhale technique matter? I prefer to exhale with my mouth loose and slightly open (like in those Mach acceleration movies) but not sure if that induces more drag. I find it more relaxing though.
