Remember: You are just another recruit in a uniform, they don’t know you. They would be yelling at someone else if you weren’t there. Don’t make it personal….
To all new recruits, Basic is only going to be a very small fraction of your career and don't think the rest of the army is like it. It's there for a reason. Best of luck.

Because them next 2 and a half months of Basic, is gonna suck ass but you gonna get to know some cool-ass people as well as some dickheads too while being in there. My advice to you is to always study that blue book and that skill level task 1 book cause that shits gonna help you on the red phase testing & the end of phase testing too. As well as learning how to zero your weapon and brushing up on some land nav. Best of luck to you soldiers and make it what you can be🫡
For anyone thats curious of joining. All you need is self control, confidence, a shit ton of patience and dont over think it. Once you complete basic and a.i.t its a walk in the park. One big thing: Learn to keep your mouth shut. My platoon was constantly getting smoked because of kids always trying to chat in formation or getting in arguments because their fragile egos were challenged. I was probably the only one with the special ability to stay quiet for more than a minute, and it really sucked having to pay for other peoples' immaturity.
Right place, right time, right uniform. Just graduated this past Friday. Don't give up and remember you're why.
I remember watching a bunch of videos like these before going to basic in 2017. I didn't think I'd stay in for long but now I'm about a month away from getting my degree and commissioning.

Nice. Stay strong.
To new recruits (ARMY atleast) Enjoy Basic. Take it serious, but don't stress yourself into a spiral. It is there for a reason, be a sponge, absorb information, as for the other bs that happens, think of it as something that you will look back upon and laugh about. It gets crazy, but don't judge Big Army by basic training. Big Army is pretty fun, and OSUT/BCT and AIT is the most fun you'll never want to have again. It's about memories and knowledge.
I fell off the bus while carrying two duffle bags and I stood up while ds still yelling at me and after we fell into formation a ds went and checked on my wounded and aided me with bandage

@feraligatr4206

Were you allowed to bring a journal that had already been started from home? Or did you buy one from the px while in BCt?
There is no stress. Stress implies that you need to worry about something, make hard decisions, face serious consequences. There is none of that. You listen. You do what you're told. You don't have to think! You can literally shut down and just absorb. It is the easiest thing ever. Go in with a positive attitude. Try to pass that attitude on to your platoon mates. Realize that the hardest thing is "hurry up and wait"
You're either gonna get smarter or you're gonna get stronger!! That's what my DS said all the time...

Don't let a veteran friend know how to mail anything to you. We WILL mail you contraband and anticipate your reaction when your Drill Sergeant does mail call.
Marksmanship was very important when I went through BCT. If you shoot well, and I mean tops in the company you will be gold with the Drill Sergeants. Shoot a top Expert score and that will improve your standing. Also, be confident with your abilities, never get down.
As someone with two kids my motivation is high because I’m doing it for them
This was my advice from my recruiter, who I actually liked, trusted, and didn't steer me wrong. (Yeah I know. Crazy right? But he was a good one.) 1. Right Place. 2. Right Time. 3. Right Uniform. 3 easy steps, and everything in the army is pretty easy. Basic is only stressful if you make it stressful. If you don't like people yelling, do things with speed, or working as a team. You will hate basic. Once you figure out that the yelling isn't personal, doing what your told quickly, and having comradaerie. Basic becomes fun and easy. Just shut up, pay attention to commands, do the exercises, bond with your buddies, and focus on completing the days tasks. Don't be a smartass, don't ask questions, don't do dumb shit. Just literally do what your told. The biggest thing the drill sgts are trying to teach you to just follow commands correctly. When they say come here, you run there. If they say front leaning rest, you get into the position, if they say form up, you form up. It is not hard at all.

I wanted to be a MP but the closer I’m getting to actually shipping off makes me not want to become one. Either way I’ve been running 6 miles a day and doing Atleast 130 push ups everyday. I appreciate these videos helping me ease off the nervousness
Great advise Chris.Granted i went to basic in the early 80's basic then has many similarities prior to and after 1982. 2 important things you can do to make your life in basic smoother. Be in shape and train hard for months prior to going in. You can never be in perfect shape but being in great shape like i was i never fell out on pt runs (entire time in the Army)or fell out running to the ranges in full gear and M-16. We were also giving a smart book which basically told you what you needed to graduate so we always carried them and studied them during lulls in training (which are many hence the term Hurry up and wait) In the military nothing is forever all things will end sooner or later meaning basic will flyby before you know it so don't worry about home life just deal with the situation you are in like completing basic training. Be motivated and positive and disciplined and things will be fine. I had one issue in basic in the beginning of learning to fire my M-16 i had problems keeping a tight shot group during zero-ing my weapon.Bottom line after learning how to relax and breathe properly i shot expert with 39/40 hits. Don't worry if you really want to be a Solider and you put 100% into it you will. Millions have before. I only seen people in poor shape fail or injured.

Keep your locker locked. A member of my basic training unit at Fort Sill had all his gear thrown out of a second story window because he forgot to lock his wall locker
Good advice. I went to basic training and AIT fort Benning Georgia 1983 June in middle of summer. Before I shipped out I would lift weights and run two miles a day this help me basic training. My drill sergeant use to say don't let your emotion get in your way stay focused on the mission. Do not let your girlfriend back home make you quit basic training because she missed you. Get your body acclimated to weather conditions outside before you shipped out . In us army you not always in comfortable conditions like at home . Just don't quit .
I knew they were always watching so I stood firm. they saw that.

How was it?
Here's the biggest advice I would give to anyone deciding to join. Never take anything personally. You're going to find yourself in situations where the entire platoon or squad is getting smoked because 'somebody' did something wrong. It might be you that caused it, it might be someone else. Its going to be someone. And its not going to matter how well everyone did, the Drill Sergeants are always going to be able to find something. When you get smoked in this 'mass punishment' its a scheduled event. That day at that hour was scheduled to be 'Remedial PT'. It is the Drill Sergeants' duty to get everyone in shape, and unfortunately morning PT isn't enough to get a formation in shape. So they have days usually once or twice a week where they do extra PT and its grueling. But they use this event to enforce discipline as well. They'll find a wall locker unlocked, a bed not made to standard, an unsecured weapon, something.. even if they have to make it up. In either case, know that you are going to go through this event several times during your cycle. Never EVER take it out on the one who 'caused' the smoking. And if you happen to be targeted by it, understand that it was remedial PT and you're not as screwed up as you might think you are. Just tighten up and get through it.

I remember a guy in our platoon was given the instructions to hand over his weapon to the drill sgt, in which the drill sgt preceded to yell at him for losing his weapon. As soon as the drill sgt told him to drop, we all dropped. This was 6 weeks in, and we were a pretty tight platoon. The next couple hours we got smoked, but there was no yelling. Just commands for exercises. During our graduation, our drill sgts told us that our last few weeks, we had no errors, and they gave up finding issues. They just told us to go outside and start exercises.

Basic was only the beginning. You will be smoked constantly, AIT was at least as hard, just enough freedom to fumess thi gs up. Arrived at Ft. Polk, infantry. AIT and Basic only started the real experience. Permanent Party was was hardcore. Most men enjoy basic training. Most men find the instruction at basic better than high school. Most men find basic easier than they anticipated. Most men are surprised how much money they earn
It's all a game. Everyone is worried about doing something that will get the platoon smoked but it's basic training. You're gonna get smoked anyway. If they don't have a reason to smoke you they will make one up but you're getting smoked no matter what you do. This is important to remember. When the drills say why they are smoking you it's a reason they picked out of a hat. Unless it's something really bad and really obvious, like a soldier not making his bed, all their reasons are made up even if they blame someone for it. So don't be giving the poor sap the drills single out a blanket party because even if that soldier hadn't messed up (and most likely he didn't mess up anyway) recognize that it's just the drills playing a divide and conquer game.

I do not get this stand out or do not stand out mentality. Basic training 1982 Ft. Jackson. I was in Hollywood longer and much to the ranges. My drill sergeant was a paratrooper so when I platoon everything seen on a more quicker pace and we did things different than the other platoons. PT all the time at range anyplace most times on hills facing down push up. Never took rides from range fast paced marching. So did I stand out Yes I did motivate and get the rest of the platoon to stand out. Graduated at super trooper maxed PT both, range, super bowl. Receive my first AAM. Psychological with the hard part but prepared me 9 month later for PLDC which was super hard psychologically and physically Baumholder Germany 8th ID. Stood out all my life did not see any reason not to stand out bring it and I stand tall and take the challenge. Just saying. It's about the team and with define you and permanent party. Smoke me drill sergeant smoke me. Stand tall young men and women.
I find these videos funny......just the title "Survive Army Basic Training". I went through basic training in 1978, and later as a commissioned officer was the XO of a basic training company in 1986. There were no videos on it back then and in 78 I went in totally cold and uniformed. But I was a three sport athlete in high school and freshman year of college. I treated BT just like going out for another sport. The secrets, be in shape before you get there, keep you mouth shut and your ears open, follow orders and have fun. If you go in shape than you won't stick out. I ran cross country in high school and college, so I already had great endurance. Army basic training is not Ranger School. Just have a great attitude, go in shape physically and you'll have fun. We didn't have some of the negative influences as kids today. No social media to be addicted to, no hours and hours on cell phones or glued to a computer. Back then kids spent time outside running around not stuck in the house isolating. BT was an awesome experience. I'm 66 and still remember my Drill Sergeants, DS Kirkbride and DS Bailey. The greatest NCO's I've ever met and role models!

I went through in 77, and I could not agree more. Fine men my DS's, the officers not so much.

Just show up!
I joined the ARMY in 1981 as a buck private and my ETS was 1984 as a SGT E5 , Let me say you will not like every unit you get assigned the officers and NCO above you can be a holes and unfair.
I have the ultimate tip for me to pass basic training!……I already did 😂😂😂😂
Okay I don’t understand what a recruit would need to do to stand out in a bad way, even though they’re doing everything they think they should be doing to get a promotion, but I don’t know what they could have done to stand out in a bad way. I’m confused. It’s something that I worry about often before going to basic. I feel like I could do really well, but then I’m worried others will look it’s me like I’m being a kiss ass because I’m older and I’m doing well.

No, don't let it make you 2nd guess, trust me!. If you are not a teen, and you are an adult, take full charge, don't let your life experiences in the civilian world be in vain, you can use it as an advantage. Don't let the young ones ruin you and others and your time and to power over you.

Standing out in a bad way is like someone that don't do the correct thing and your platoon/company gets punished for it and everyone hates you.

It's not kissing ass, you won't be kissing ass, kissing ass is someone in my platoon at basic trying so hard to be liked by everyone and being a fake friend, a snake, etc., to get the attention, to get others to like him, trying so hard to bully others of threats/intimidation/manipulation, etc.
Biggest thing just don't let them know your name...

They'll put you in a special program while you're at it. It'll give you more exercises and discipline training. As long as you're strong mentally or if you're very good at dissociating then you'll catch up in no time.
Do exactly what you're told no more no less don't think you no a better way

Making your bunk use a hanger to smooth out wrinkles, 15 mins early to everything, for males if you not use to shaving every single day. Start before you leave, don’t be the guy who has cut marks on skins and bleeding from shaving.
Just get through Red phase and then you'll realize that its easy
