Good thing you pointed out. People outside don't get you can quit the Marines in that early phase, without too many issues. The DI's excel at "motivating " poor performer's. Its in their oath. We will not give up on you, even after you've given up on yourself. Its sad when you see it. DOR is rough when you observe good intentioned people that volunteered to join get sent home.

To all the soon to be shippers always remember; be loud, be fast, do what you are told, don’t make yourself too known as a troublemaker. Fastest way out of boot camp is by graduation. Other else than that, keep your motivation up and drive through one day you’re gonna look back in boot camp and think all the shenanigans you went through and laugh about it.

You dont need to be a tri athlete to make it. Train accordingly and rest a full week before you ship out. Make sure you can run 3 miles in 24 minutes or less (aim for 21) make sure you can do a 1:30 plank (aim for 2 minutes) and make sure you can do at least 5 pullups palm out from a full dead hang (aim for 8-10) if you are at those numbers before you ship you will be physically ready for what Boot Camp will hit you with. Physically, the mental part will be up to you and how you deal with it (homesick, being told when to shower, when to move, waking up at 4 in the morning etc.) Its what you make of it. If you quit, you will spend an extended period of time in receiving a place called RSP. RSP is where your soul can truly die, so the fastest way out is to graduate.

The scene with the boot camp haircut reminded me of a couple of movie scenes where guys had their long hair get cut down to nubs. Then I also thought that some of the haircut recipients were paying homage to the barbers for their service as well by giving the barbers some long locks to cut. This somehow also reminded of a time when I was walking to my office with a Gunny from the parking lot to the entrance, and I shoved my hands in pockets because it was chilly. The Gunny immediately looked at me, and sternly asked if I was testing her. My hands quickly and promptly came out of my pockets with the reply, no, Gunny, absolutely not. BTW, I was a LtCol at the time.

The DI’s have tailored sleeves on their Service Charlies, and I’ve never seen that anywhere else since I joined NROTC in college in 1987. It looked particularly sharp because details matter. The Marines should have recruiters do the same thing. Maybe even set up a couple day period of instruction with a cadre and curriculum developed by both MCRDs to help recruiters look good in public.

We do look good in public. Just because you've seen a few bad apples doesn't mean we all look bad. You also have to remember, it's harder for us out in the streets to keep our uniforms tailored because we're usually away from military bases and the tailors out in town won't know the regulations like on base tailors would. However, as I said, as Marines we should be looking good regardless.

In 2021 they did a couple of test runs. Starting in 2023, females from the west coast began training in San Diego. Around the same time, Paris Island's 4th Recruit Training Battalion was deactivated. Recruit companies are all gender-integrated now, though individual platoons are still single gender. Most companies, in practice are still males-only, simply because there are comparatively fewer female recruits.

Plenty of people go into the military out of shape and not being able to do ten push ups, or even one pull up, and end up passing basic/boot. I'm currently in the enlistment process for joining the Army as a 19D Cav Scout. Currently 5'11 and 240(mostly muscle though) and tbh the only thing I'm worried about is the 2 mile run. But you'll never know if you'll make it or not unless you try. Send it bro.

Think hard about why you want to join and then if it’s what you want, go for it. It’s funny, I had those same doubts not too long ago. But bootcamp is not that hard, you will get stronger. Of course you should try to get as fit as possible before you leave, there will already be a lot to mentally stress about, making it less physically stressful will help you. I’ve seen short guys make it and a few fat ones too. It’s mostly a mental thing.

Don't think too much about it. Join a gym and do a combination of weight training and cardio. Cardio is going to be more helpful to you in the long run. Most recruits arrive with a history of bad eating habits. Eat healthy now, cardio up like crazy, even on recumbent or treadmills, on the soft grass or sand & lift weights. Just enough to tone. Do overdo it.

I want to thank each and every US serviceman and woman, past or present, no matter the branch (but ESPECIALLY the Marines) for their service. Please DO NOT allow Ukraine to fall, this will be a disaster for the whole of Europe. Respect and much love to the only global superpower from your humble NATO ally - Bulgaria! P.S.: Some history trivia for y'all - if Stalin, the russians and their NKVD agents hadn't poisoned our tsar (monarch) Boris III in 1943, my country (Bulgaria) would have exited the war on the side of the US and UK as active negotiations were launched and in effect. Stalin and the russians couldn't allow that to happen and we paid the price for 80 years by being violently dragged with guns aimed on our backs, to being part of the Eastern Bloc. PLEASE do not allow this to happen to Ukraine. I firmly believe the US, UK and English-native speaking nations from the Commonwealth are the bulwark against the russian madness. But now its Ukraine that needs help
