I spent 7 years with the 101st airborne division ( 187th infantry ) and a year in Korea at Camp Casey, got out in 1998. The year in korea was in the middle, my time with the 187th ( part of the 101st ) was with 2nd battalian C company and 1st battalian C company when I returned from Korea. My last deployment with the 101st was operation Desert eagle in Daharan Saudi Arabia after bin laden destroyed Khobar Tower with a truck bomb. I got to keep one of the desert uniforms they issued us for Saudi and both pairs of desert boots. Plus all my normal uniforms, boots, gloves. And the duffle bag, we got to keep that. Me and alot of the guys in my unit had lots of extra equipment that we bought at the local flea market or pawn shop or from guys that were getting out and heading home. Ruck sack, load bearing vest, canteens and canteen pouches, ammo pouches and at the time we still wore the load bearing straps attached to a utility belt for parades and stuff. Lots of guys bought cheap uniforms and socks because you would destroy them out in the field. You could get a decent looking uniform pants and blouse for as little as 5$ and for 10$ you might get one that was freshly pressed. There were so many available I could find one with almost all the correct patches sgt strips, expert infantrymans badge, air assault wings and the screaming eagle patch... for training, lots of us would use shoe goo or fabric glue to just glue on an old nametag. I would get home wearing a uniform that smelled like a dead body, was held together by 100 mile an hour tape and sometimes stitched back together. I would undress on the back porch and just toss it in the garbage. We might save on crappy uniform for work details like if we were painting, mowing grass or something dirty. When I got out I kept 2 sets of summer weight BDUs, my Class a uniform, my jump boots and two pairs of green jungle boots ( my favorite ) I had one of the small ruck sacks from a flea market( infantry units only use the huge ones ) and I kept a poncho liner ( the best blanket ever invented )... I also kept a full load bearng straps and belt with canteens ammo pouch, 1st aid pouch and a few M249 Squad automatic weapon ( saw ) pouches and my butt pack... Stuff I used for camping. And a woodland camo goretex jacket that I snagged when a guy went AWOL. The gear they have now is soooo much better. Comfortable boots that are like sneakers, uniforms with velcro pockets, MOLLE gear... I moved to Thailand last year... I have my class A uniform jacket and some unit patches I plan on putting in a display... nothing else.

First of all, why do people think they should be rich serving in the Military? Obviously it isn’t meant for that. You want to get rich you’ll need to find a side hustle and become rich. I’m 19 years old about to visit a recruiter for an Air Force position and been working out lately for basic training. I know military ain’t gonna make me rich but it’ll provide enough money for my pockets and a place to live and with the tiny money they give me I’ll invest it in buying assets such as getting your damn car and house whilst working your butt off to get there. I’m joining mainly for the experience and hardship because although the military pay isn’t very good, their training is something that is basically priceless! I’m excited and America’s younger generation can rise if they stop focusing on money all the time!

Basically, you get to keep what you were issued in reception or basic training, except sensitive items like you mentioned. And there are always pawn or surplus stores off base that have a variety of things you might want. I wanted to keep the extreme cold weather flight gear until I found out how much the army was going to charge me for it. Btw I got out in 1984

My son only has two weeks before BCT because it took a long time to prove that he didn’t have asthma, after meeting the recruiter in may. I’m really concerned if he’s going to be able to get through it even though he’s been trying to run and get ready for about two weeks I don’t want my son to be sent home after all, he’s accomplished so far Will someone advise me?

I was there from SEP 01-02. Great first duty station. Drove CSM Gogue, used to PT and do BJJ with MAJ Andersen and even got to spend about a month in the Scout platoon. Drove Secret Service around before and during POTUS 43 visit. Good times. PCSed to Hood from the JSA and went to Iraq with 4ID. 2 of the guys in my mortar platoon came from Greaves. My JSA PCS plaque and armband are hanging up in my local American Legion Post and my belt buckle is in a drawer around here somewhere. In Front of Them All!

For the continental 48 states, Hood and Bliss were at the bottom along with Sill, Leonard Wood and Polk when I was serving in the late 70s and early 80s. Eustis, Hunter AAF, Carson and Lewis were usually most requested from what I can remember that long ago.
