❤️ Have you ever studied for hours, only to feel like you're hitting a brick wall? That feeling of burnout can be crushing - and I know it well. In 2017, I very nearly quit medical school as my energy and motivation fell to rock bottom. This experience changed me, and I've learned a lot about how to avoid burnout since then - in this video I'll share with you the most important strategies I use to fend it off.

I feel that writing down my thoughts helps me a lot when I am burnout out. I feel that having a clear idea about why you are burned out, what your goals are, or what you are worried about helps you focus and helps you understand why you are feeling a certain way.

100% Agree. I once got to a point of desperation and burn out which was a bit depressive. I just started a rant in my notebook about everything I was facing and basically jotted down whatever came to my mind. I realized after that these thoughts were gone, as if I had transferred them from my mind straight to paper.

This is the healthiest productivity video I’ve ever watched. I’m so sick of “read 10 books a month”, “wake up at 5 am” like, these things have only made my mental health worse and this video is so comforting. I’ve literally stopped in the middle of the video to go write down a spectrum of things that energize me and things that drain me and I will start organizing my day based on this, it makes so much sense! Thank you, Izzy!💖 And you got a new follower because I absolutely want to watch more of your videos🩵✨

    0. 0:00 Intro We have to study to go up and not down, let's learn how to. 1. 1:37 The principle of energy management time x effixiency of study techniques × energy We need to focus on our wellbeing. Try to discover what drains your energy and what re-energizes you so you can organize yourself in a way that work flows. 2. 0a a Scheduling for Sustainability We need to study and we NEED to rest. Understand when you are able to perform more, is it on the mornings? Put your most important tasks at morning! Is it the afternoon? Same goes for it. 3. 0a a Strategies for study efficiency optimisation Understand that you can see your work as something good for you. A. Organize your workspace An organized place changes EVERYTHING. No distractions, just you and your studies. B. Find a study community A partner, a group, it's up to you. Studying with other persons can increase your productivity and make you feel relaxed. C. Vary your studies You don't need to be always doing something heavy in order to be productive. D. Gamifying tasks can bring joy to a stressful day, you can always try it. *something that seems to not work that much for me idk E. Make sure you're optimizing your time by using study techniques that *works for you*. 4. 0a a Active wellbeing management Understand what self care means to *you*. You don't need to go out and buy clothes or drink alcohol in order to distress and enjoy your free time. Anyway, you can do that. The point is, lifting wheight, running, meditation, reading, there's a lot of stuff you can do that doesn't involve spending money. In order to take care of yourself: I. Sleep (please, sleep) Make sure you have enough time to rest. Not resting will drastically reduce your productivity II. Stablish a routine where you have moments of walking, move your body. III. Meditation The practice of medidation changed her life and can do the same for you. IV. Go out! After all, we're still animals, staying in contact with nature is key. V. Eat right. You don't need to be a nutritionist in order to comprehend what you can eat everyday and what you need to avoid on your daily basis. Balance is key. 5. Resume

I think that finding a community to engage with is the most important part. Trying to force yourself to find something appealing in a given subject might actually have the opposite effect of increased energy usage rather than its mitigation. If you have a study group, the people around you act as a sort of safety net for when the lulls inevitably come. Essentially, you don’t have to have a passion for something in order to act, and study groups give you the framework to realize this.

I’m an incoming 1st year med student this September, and I really appreciate the things you mentioned in the video. I wasn’t able to practice a healthy lifestyle and school-life balance during my premed days, so I’m eager to do better this time for the sake of my mental and physical health.

I have only just started studying (literally three days ago) but what i hated about the first day was the silence. I was completely unable to focus on my book, even though i had devided it into 30 pages a day (since i want to finish it within the month, it is over 900 pages) and had a rough plan, and even with music i was really struggling. What i found really helped me on day 2 was watching «study with me» videos, in particular the ones without lofi music, but ambiant sounds (like fire or rain, or both) and in those they also stucture them to be 25 minute intervals with 5 minute breaks. It was amazing, i was able to stay completely focused, AND finish all the pages (including note taking) in roughly 4 hours (it really didnt feel like that long. It was like having a study partner, even though we didn´t talk to each other. I hope this keeps motivating me, because these past two days have been great (im gonna study again shorty, just have to finish my breakfast haha) Thank you for this video! I´ll keep it all in mind if ever I feel this burnout!

Thank you for this video Izzy! Everything is structured and helpful!!! I think one more thing that one shouldn't forget about is still being kind to yourself 💗, if the energy is still not there, even if it seems like we're doing everything in accordance with the schedule: rest, sleep properly and eat wholesome food. I was just discussing this with my therapist, who told me that there are always underlying biological things that we can't control, and they can give us a spontaneously poor sleep or sleepiness even after a night with a proper sleep 😴 If I remember correctly, you even mentioned something similar in one of your videos about studying tips. You said that one needs to adjust the routine, based on the current needs/circumstances and study material.

After watching your video, I seem to have some motivation and methods to make some changes again. Thank you.

I like learning new things, because of my curiosity to know and understand, what's happening around me in this world..I am also very consicious about avoiding getting mentally drained out by overloading things in my mind, in my pursuit of knowledge...so its a very delicate and fine balance that we have to maintain, when we try to learn about new things, at the same time not exhausting our mind...this is where, meditation, yoga, other exercises comes in, to free our mind and body... meditation truly provides the ultimate sophistication of calmness, which our mind requires, everyday...I believe in meditation, it's a purest form of exercise that helps us to sustain a good healthy mind...as I grow up,I realise that our mind is so powerful than anything in our lives... well ! Coming back to the habit of reading, meaningful reading habits, surely provides certain enlightenment, reading raises our awareness levels and reading also brings us certain level of calmness too...I support reading 📚📖...good job Izzy. 0:28

for me i just needed a study buddy, for like 3 mo I'd grind straight 6-8 hours of studying without burning out at all, just limited by exhaustion. However, in those 3 mo I did NOT socialize at all, so my productivity would decrease by a lot, I'd prob only last 1-2 hours but then I started studying with someone and it made me feel so much better to have a second perspective.

I really wish I saw this video when i was preparing for my board exams. I took 3 tuition classes on total…and i was so sleep deprived…I studied so hard and I didn’t rest much…back then i never knew the term “burn out”. And constantly studying all the time w/o taking proper breaks resulted in burning out. I worked hard the whole year but i did not prepare the day before the exam…i was so tired and I couldn’t study anymore and i scored only 70%…wish i knew about this earlier.

Thank you for this info, Dr. Izzy! Just a question, does being full makes you lose your focus in studying? why do I feel sleepy?

It's nice to see these videos seem to have been more organised lately, after what appears to have been some time of irregular uploading. Is this just for the summer, or will this be a new routine?
