I’m hoping to be able to overcome my fear from my new bosses and coworkers. I took a leap of faith to a new job and bigger corporation and it’s been over 2mons now and feel I haven’t made an impactful to impress anyone and every time I see my VP I feel this knot in my stomach and fearful of making a mistake or not having the answers she will need from me esp next week when my boss will not be available and I have to take over the team. Praying all goes well. Sometimes this fear makes me question why I dared to change jobs. 😭

I had an very narcissistic business partner. Years later I am still living in fear even though I haven’t been involved in that business for a long time.

I can really relate to you. I have worked 25 years in healthcare business development and am definitely an introvert. I had a sever fear of public speaking as well and did Toastmasters to help. I work for a large corporation and an aggressive narc boss who prefers punitive punishments with staff, i.e., write ups, scolding, etc. My goal for this meeting next week is to SHINE and believe in myself. Thank you for sharing!

I had a boss yell at me many years ago for making a mistake on the job and it still bothers me. I don`t know how to deal with it sometimes and it irritates me. I think the job application said `no experience necessary`. Maybe I should have said that to him.

I'm scared of my boss. She once questioned me for putting black linens on the tables for the wedding reception instead of white, the correct/usual color (but in my defense, we *usually* put on black linens for *any other* event, and _I_ don't even set the reception linens in general). Oh, and she was upset I had signed up for a one-person shift, because she didn't think I could manage alone. I'll admit, I am much better with a helping hand and guide, but come on, that's no excuse for being insensitive. One of our student leader's responsibilities is organizing who works which shifts on the schedule, and my boss scolded him for not noticing I had signed up a coffee service. When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt belittled by her. She said she didn't think so, was all "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen" (something like, that, so I'm not perfectly quoting her), and she told me I need someone there to give me instructions and guide me. She is not afraid to express her condemnations and question me when my jumbled brain makes me do ✌"dumb"✌ things. I can see why she lives in her own apartment. Heck, I can see why she works so many wedding receptions. Personal compensation, I bet. Do you guys need me to clarify? Now I avoid her as much as possible. I see her in a room, I don't go in. I see her coming down the hall, I retreat (if it doesn't look so obvious). And just recently, I decided not to sign up for a morning shift to get extra money...because I started wondering if I would be alone with her. She's pushed me to it. I hope that manifests itself to make a point to her, activating her guilt.

Hi Paul, just curious, were you fire/terminated just like that even though you're performing great at your work? Haven't you raised it to the union or some employment tribunal for unfair dismissal? Didn't you just talk to them to make you redundant instead so you can get payment for dismissal? Thanks

Most jobs are ‘at will’ employers. They can fire you for any reason (that doesn’t violate workers rights laws in their given state).

My first ever job was a busboy job that I didn’t really want but had no choice. I didn’t realize that this place I would work at would be such a nightmare. I was a senior in highschool at the time but I was working 6 days a week and doubled during the weekend. Basically. Monday then wendsday through Monday. It was hectic and since I was new they didn’t hire a new bus boy so not only was I a bus boy but I was also a bar back bussing for nearly like 55+ tables. My family is the type to value work over school so I figured they really didn’t care if I had went to school. My dad tried to make it seem as if I could work there for years and work up to be the host. I was constantly being yelled at and coming in early meanwhile leaving at 2-4 am in the morning. I’m still in school but I thought all jobs were like that and every day it was just constantly hectic every single day I went into work on top of being disrespected by customers for absolutely no reason to making nothing and this restaurant didn’t let us have breaks it was just hours of work and at the end I was cool with the Spanish dudes in the back so they would make me a meal once in a while after the owner left so I could eat and not eat scraps from the customers after taking their food back if they didn’t want left overs (it was a semi high Italian restaurant) but every single day I understood how easily they could replace me and I was pressured by this burden of my parents wanting me to work (I usually come home from school and help my mom clean because she’s getting older and my dad and siblings work) they’re European so I guess it’s that homeland mentality but I ended up failing school and had to repeat my senior year (I won’t try and make a long story short but I live in a Brooklyn and in New York you need state regents to graduate along with credits and I only started to live in New York maybe after my junior year so I didn’t have my regents completed so this year I had to do all of them within the one year which was awful. I finally had the guts to quit that job because they were stealing my money (I was getting paid off the books) they didn’t pay me for my entire last month I worked there and it took them another 3-4 weeks to pay me and when I went to get my envelope it was 200 dollars :/ Now they want me to work full time wether it’s doorman or cleaning while I’m still in school trying to graduate. I’m ngl it’s hard to get up in the morning and try to go when it’s all people you don’t recognize and for me it’s not wanting to be seen by others and terrified at the fact that if someone recognizes me or something and even going makes me feel awful. I don’t go to a good school by any means so the classes I have left just require attendance and just getting up in the morning to be somewhere where all I do is sit (the commute for me is probably like an hour and 45 minutes just to get to school so to get there and back probably nearly 3 hours. I stay up late matter fact it’s like 2am as I’m writing this but I just don’t know what to do… my phobia is just not wanting to work in an environment where it’s constant chaos and my parents think it’s because I’m lazy and don’t have ambition or work ethic. I don’t know if I do or don’t all I know is if I don’t graduate and drop out I end up working somewhere probably as a doorman. If I do end up graduating I’ll more than likely end up working as a doorman. I feel like there’s a cross roads that both end up at the same place. I don’t really have any financial freedom I’m not allowed to have a credit card nor debit card (gotta give the checks to parents) I still don’t even have my license I’m used to going to the DMV to get my permit and stuff but all they do is pester me about doing it online and having to register and needing all this different type of documentation. I wonder why they can’t just take me to the dmv to do it. I’m confused I don’t know what to do I want to graduate but I don’t know if I’ll ever end up living on my own and will live with my parents forever. We want to buy a house and as a family we make a lot but we don’t own any house so we just rent a lot. Idk what to do. Any advice I will gladly take maybe I’m just overreacting or something but I have no clue what to do. It’s as if I had came to the realization that “you can do whatever you want to do if you put your mind to it” was never true. I feel like I have no chance of pursuing my dreams as I have no foundation to lean on. I don’t know
