Signs you are afraid of failure: 1. Not actively pursing your goals 2. Perfectionism 3. Procrastination or other ways to self-sabotage Five ways to overcome this fear: 1. Broaden your definition of failure and success 2. Realize that failure is not always about you. There will be circumstances outside your control. 3. Don't focus on other people's endpoints. 4. Imagine the worst and prepare for it. Confidence to handle the worst will give you confidence to do your best. 5. Appreciate failure. You learn everytime you fail. Go ahead with what you know and fine tune on the way

Dr Tracey, thanks for your content. I love this one particularly because I definitely identify with all three signs of fear of failure that you mentioned. When I saw the title of this video, I was afraid it was going to be another video telling me to toughen up, as it will be another ‘failure’ as I fail to become brave as I “should” be. Turns out, I think your suggestions are really practical and kind, especially for people who are already critical toward themselves. I think fear of failure has a lot to do with our self talk when we don’t meet our expectations. I used to have really punishing, critical, self defeating thoughts that associate every little ‘failure’ with my entire self worth. I started avoiding more and more things. Soon, it felt like I was living half a life, seeing opportunities come and go, and I was paralyzed by fear from truly committing to anything. Eventually my self esteem became really low because I wasn’t doing anything in my life and I felt like a huge failure. It was only until I started practicing self compassion in these past two years that I learned to become more accepting and forgiving toward myself, and was able to see things from a different perspective. I’m now able to deal with ‘failures’ more healthily, and am trying to be more active in pursuing things that I care about. It’s still dead scary, but I want to try to move forward a little more. Thank you again Dr Tracey. I learned a lot from your channel. This is my first time leaving a comment. Just to let you know you have a viewer from Malaysia ❤️

Ok Dr. Tracey! you really pegged me on this one. Your video is right on time. I’ve struggled with this to some degree all my life but I noticed my fears became worse once I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and I wasn’t able to consistently achieve even small goals. I’ve feared disappointing others ( by not being the old me) and I myself have been disappointed. It has all taken a mental toll on me. I don’t give up easy so I will find a way through this. I miss setting and achieving goals. I believe my whole mindset will have to be different. I believe I have to allow myself to dream again for starters. Somewhere along this 10 year journey of illness I became hopeless, but I want different. Thank you so much. 🌷

How do I began to seek counseling for mental illness? I’m dealing with complicated grief and guilt. It’s almost 3 years since I lost my husband of over 20 years. I still cry everyday. I’m stuck mentally. Can’t get out of bed. Don’t enjoy eating. I need to exercise, move my body. Despite this pandemic, there are things I could do I.e. walk at the park, there is a social distance line dance class (I was an avid line dancer before all this). That used to help going 3 times a week. Sometimes that’s ALL I was able to do all day. I feel hopeless and stuck. I watch your videos all the time and they really help by giving me a different perspective. Dr. put my on Zoloft to help with sleep, panic attacks and ptsd (I watched my husband die in the hospital). I was on about a year. It did nothing! I weaned off. I’m diabetic, so I’m aware to eat better and try hard to help my health. I’m just really stuck. I haven’t really had suicidal ideation but feel useless. I volunteer throughout the month, restricted right now but I do what I can. I had a little counseling from hospice right after he died but moved to another city. How do I start now to seek more help for myself?

Oooomg this is so important!!!! ❤️ I wish I had this kind of information in my teens 😭😭😭 I've been practically taught to avoid failure by theory based planning and to not waste expensive resources, so I internalized this as everything needing to be perfect or I failed because I was being wasteful. I cannot figure out whether I have CPTSD or autism or ADHD or some combination thereof (my formal diagnosis is dysthymia and generalized anxiety, but I think they stem from something more fundamental, that this is a very superficial diagnosis, but SSRIs do help...), but it would help so much in deciding how to make the most productive decisions in my life 😢

Is fear of failure a close relative of the fear of rejection? I dreaded situations that arouse wherein sides or teams were to be chosen in social settings. An example would be gym class where teams picked. I was afraid I would be the last to be chosen. As it played out I was among the last to be chosen. I felt absolutely terrible. I started avoiding situations of that sort. I've never heard anyone talk the way you do. I surely could have benefitted from such advise many years ago as I am now well into my sixties. My hope is that young people today can learn how to cope with these devastating fears.

Thanks Joseph. if you are talking about Christian beliefs, there is the element forgiveness and recognizing that no one is perfect. It's worth looking at where your guilt is coming from. Is it spiritual conviction because you’re not trying to do what’s asked of you or is it because people around you are judging you or are you being overly hard on yourself? These are questions you could ponder on

Dr. Marks, I can't hold a job in fear of doing poorly. Does this ever go away? My last job last 2 weeks. I can't even get a job now because my resume looks like garbage.

I understand what is being said and agree with it. BUT there is no mention of the pain.. how bad it hurts. I can - and do fail over and over again and its not a problem for me... I just keep plugging along. BUT then there are things are very painful when I fail.. it doesn't work out. Those instances are the issue and that is the area where my life is frustrating

You talk only about the fear of failure but what about the fear of success too. I have severe fear of failure that I don’t attempt so many things like learning a new language because I don’t think I can learn it at my age.

Failure, ADHD, procrastination, underachieving and the list goes on. Is there any hope for me? Frustratingly no. I like to think i have something to offer the world.

01:22 I don't think I want to be things perfect to avoid things. I think I avoid things because I can't stand the long struggle with things not perfect. While playing music for example...even with friends, it's impossible to find it enjoyable enough and free of toxic perfectionism I have to deal with every single moment I'm playing

Search for some low cost clinics. In your area. I know someone who was only paying five dollars a session based on their income. these kinds of clinics are usually funded by nonprofit organizations.
