I think the biggest fear I have that has been preventing me from doing my work is my fear of failing to reach my full potential... I have way too high of expectations of myself, but it's because I know I can accomplish a lot if I set my mind to it and stay disciplined. But the mountain of expectations is so high and daunting to look at that I scare myself away from even starting my work. Does anyone else experience this or is it just me?

Absolutely ... do you think you are a perfectionist? I am to a degree and that tends to kill my motivation. That is, if I can see what my goals look like in perfection, but I can’t see exactly HOW to get to that level, I shut down. And that makes no sense ... because: 1) virtually no one knows exactly how to achieve perfection without trying/failing 2) perfection doesn’t really exist in the first place ... if you see someone achieve perfection, chances are they would tell you that they have several criticisms of their work ... you see it as perfect because you can’t see the original vision in their head So I’ve been having some success with breaking down my goal into very small pieces ... there’s no pressure to achieve perfection with just a portion of the goal ... and give myself permission to work on it in a messy attempt to master that little aspect. Then I move to another. Starting a non-goal is much easier, and when you put the pieces together you are either happy with the result or you’ve gotten far along and can continue to hone it. That said ... are you sure you don’t have a fear of success instead??

Im still suffering from extreme fear of failure to the point that that I’m totally dysfunctional and started doubting myself and to perform any task if any. My biggest concern is that you don’t have indefinite amount of times you fail. People around ( workplace, university,..etc) are unlikely to have the patience to wait until you succeed. They will get frustrated and then desprate measures are likely to follow ( expelled from university, forcing you to resign, ..etc) That makes me totally uncomfortable with the idea of failing, and I try to avoid being in such situation as soon as I feel threatened by the failure. Very sad :’(

But what about the regret if you don't try? Read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. If you think fail, you will fail. @kristinakostadinova1836

In order to make yourself try something new without the fear of failure, then don't set goals for this thing (at least initially). You need this in order not to put labels of whether you succeeded or not - determining success would be impossible if you don't have a goal. Also, choose activities where "success" is very difficult to see or define except if you try hard to put some measuring system. For example, have a walk in the mountains, don't define how long or anything, just go there just as a hobby, literally, even if it's 5 min, even if it's 1 min. If you like it, continue doing it and before long the people will know you as "the hiking person". Then there you have something of importance in your life! Secretly your goal will be to just try new things! And if you just do it, without thinking about success or failure of the new thing, then you would succeed in trying new things and eventually find what inspires you the most. Then you can transition in being better at it etc. Other examples - try origami, without thinking how the piece will look like at the end, the important part would be that you tried to fold a sheet for a while! If you found the process nice, then just do it again. Or try gardening - get a few yoghurt cups, will with soil, get some seeds of a random herb, e.g. basil. Seed, water and just watch!

Sadly, most of us live in a society where failure is discouraged in the form of people lambasting us like we are the worst thing to happen in this world…. >. But I guess in the eyes of many, especially higher-ups, people who teach this will never be good teachers because they want factory-grown “perfect” people….. Oh, and I find it ironic that schools teach about great people, nevermind that most of them had failures too and not the perfect beings they love glossing over…..

Thank you for this video. My job involves public speaking. I have fallen into a pattern of butchering my way through, with little prep, and then fall way below my own standards. When I finished my speaking today, a colleague said I did well, but my client told me how nervous and underconfident I sounded. About 12 hours later, I’m still sitting here disappointed and ashamed and guilty over my performance. There have been plenty of times I have butchered these moments and just let myself spiral out in shame and hide...and I realize failing to prep is part of that hiding. I am not new to my career which makes it more embarrassing that I’ve let this go on for so long, but I’m ready to practice to improve, instead of living out a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure because I don’t try to improve because I’m avoiding the pain of future failure. I had even changed my mantra from do your best to basically “do the amount that you can live with.” Maybe I’ve even fallen below that. I have been giving myself tough love all day and am ready to change and put the work in and show up, but I also came here for comfort and encouragement. Anything anyone can spare. Have a good day

Hey man , thanks this video really helps . I am an student of 10th satndard and you know I have been brought up in. A surrounding where if you fail , you are mocked for that for your whole entire life. My family members do it too whenever I try doing something they don't like , they just make me recall of my failure and how everyone just made fun of me . Thanks man . This really helped. I just hope you have a happy life ahead

Great explanation and advice! From my experience, I truly believe that if the situation is not out of our hands, we can overcome the problems that lead to a failure by a diligent planning and consistent practice! Thank you!

I completely agree with the stoic philosopher Epic-Tities on the concept of things being outside or inside someone's bra of capabilites.
