Addiction to substances like nicotine, alcohol, and drugs can be incredibly difficult to overcome. These addictions harm our mental and physical health and deplete essential nutrients in the body, particularly NAD.
NAD is a crucial coenzyme involved in over 500 different chemical reactions in the body. It plays a vital role in energy production, DNA repair, and maintaining proper cellular functioning. However, addiction to substances like nicotine, alcohol, and drugs can significantly deplete NAD levels in the body.
Symptoms of NAD deficiency include fatigue, muscle soreness, weight gain, difficulty sleeping and concentrating, brain fog, and decreased stamina. These symptoms can make it even harder for someone to overcome an addiction.
To combat NAD deficiency, consider taking vitamin B3, also known as niacin. Niacin helps increase NAD levels in the body, improving energy, helping to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and aiding in addiction recovery.
Some people may experience a flushing response on their skin when taking niacin, which can be uncomfortable. In this case, no-flush niacin can be used instead.

ex-smoker here (13 years, almost a pack a day); I tried quitting 3 times, the 4th time I prepped myself by reading books about anxiety and depression and that's what finally broke off my addiction to nicotine - you just have to know how your brain works and from there, you can retrain it. One of the tricks I used was to constantly tell myself that I had a life before cigarettes and I wanted that life back - so the 4th time I tried to quit, I was successful. Been smoke-free since 2016.

completely agree, knowing what to expect, with regard to very negative thinking that encourages you to pick up again is key. Meditation also helps with this, learning to be able to detach from thoughts if/when cravings occur and exercise for me is absolutely necessary

I did the same thing and quit for a long time. Then life hit he in a completely different angle and put me back on the smoking train. I can go a week or two without one but geez it's insanely hard now a days to completely quit all together.

@@outofshapecartoons4138 Ive done the same thing as well and completely agree its insanely difficult to get motivated to give up again. Have to be ruthless in life with addictions. Putting people aside if needs be, changing your environment if possible. Trying something new in life, always good for the brain. Hobbies, learning to cook nice meals, which youll love with actual taste buds. Weight gain is way less unhealth than smoking. Hope you get motivated again.

There is so much more to this than meets the eye. As a recovering alcoholic. About 4 years sober now. I am noticing that the different substances are not the ONLY issue. I am noticing I also have a lot of addictions to my emotions (How I feel). AKA "emotional addictions". We must also recognize that it is just as easy to NOT have a substance abuse problem but to constantly go through a "vicious cycle" of returning to places in our minds that make us "feel" better but that are not good for us at all. Years of our lives are lost due to "chasing our feelings" just to never reach what we thought would fulfill us or make us happy. We must conquer and overcome our "emotional addictions" as well. There are hundreds of unhealthy behaviors that we could attribute this to. I am learning and realizing more and more of these daily. Thanks for the video, Dr. Berg.

Good for you. Im 56. Smoked pot and drank since junior high school pretty much. Much more so in my adult years. I finally got tired of it. Tired of chasing and the burden it all comes with. Same thing happened in my early twenties with cigarettes. Got tired of it. Bothersome. The chase is a false positive to say the least.

From there city job and other people that smoke socially/drinkers and yeah? Ive since left work and now drink and smoke more often in spare time to catch up with random friends and colleagues from the past. It feels great sometimes just breaking for a bit but when you have a smoke again after a whilw jesus its so nice! They are all like anything else lusty in life... its just great to never go full hardcore but easier said than done... more so when drinking and avoiding smokos is very hard. Congrats to you though!

Good luck!!! I'm slowly reducing the amount of cigarettes until I get down to 5 a day. Then I will just quit. I'm at 10 a day right now. I stopped smoking in my house and car, which was a BIG help. We can do it!!!

Emotional and psychological attachment is the most difficult to brake when quitting a bad addiction.
I was smoking 3 packs a day and drinking 2 bottles of wine a day, I woke up 1 morning and said "I don't smoke and I don't drink" and haven't touched it since. I don't know why this worked but I do know that I bought a lot of supplements and started taking them. ❤

Well did you look at your Associates and see what state of mind they were in? Your family? They explained the family disease to me at the Milan treatment Center in Seattle (1983 when ACOA was only 2 years old) when we were trying to get my Dad sober.... take a Calder Mobile & place everyone at the end of the rods that are balancing in the family UNIT and AS one person gets sick and progressively goes downhill, whether it's alcoholism, cancer, or whatever it is everybody on the mobile has to change their position in order to keep the family balanced....for example if the father is the alcoholic the wife has to become the head of the household...where he is the one to carry out the garbage now the sons or the siblings have to carry it out and when everybody takes over his responsibilities in the family "resentments" develop which creates a negative behavior pattern... resentments are the main cause of a drunk going back out drug addicts are even more fragile
I smoked 3 1/2 packs of cigs a day for 14 years. I quit with out anything. I just did not smoke another cig. Didn't take a drag and didn't go out with a friend while he /she went for a smoke. Just don't do it. It's really that easy. The cravings lasted for over a year after but only for a minute at a time. I haven't touched a cig in 4 years now.

Just don't get discouraged or beat yourself up when you "slip up". Just remember that you are a human and that's what humans do. I'm sober from alcohol for 15 years now. It took a long time and a lot of relapses but it finally came after a lot of praying and some time in prison, but if that's what it took for me to get sober, then I'm ok with that. At least I don't drink and cause massive heartbreak in my family or friends anymore. Cigs are proving to be a lot tougher for me. I'm gonna give it another shot with this new info to me. L-Glutamin works also a bit against cravings in general . Black Seed Oil still a bit craving for morphins. Each accident creates a stone. After a while all thesecstines getting a sokid ground to walk on. It's part of the healing journey. ❤
I believe stress and lack of sleep increase the lose of control over addictions, so the person needs actual rest for enough time.
The hardest addiction to beat is sugar. Fasting helps tremendously with coming off of sugar and a high carb diet.

The best way to get rid of sugar addiction is to get enough sun. check out HRM sun gazing. one of the effect of sun gazing is reduced hunger. I believe sun gazing jumpstart the body's ability to start burning fat as fuel, as oppose to only running on glucose. and you should be making home cooked food whenever possible. without getting rid of the MSG, it's going be hard to calm the body down enough to start fat burning.

I was reading the section on alcohol addiction and the story of Bill Wilson and Niacin. About twenty minutes later your video came up! How weird is that? I must have mentioned Niacin out loud and Mr algorithm must have picked it up. Whenever I have a health question I always go to your channel and type in the issue. just turned 30 march 18 and april 10 was my one year mark from alcohol and all the extracurricular activities that came after, and have been clean from marijuana since halloween 23’. been drinking and smoking since 16 getting over FOMO was the biggest thing for me. had to be selfish for my own needs and wants and everything else follows. Helps that i’ve inspired my lady to join too. life is beautiful

I knew a man who solved his drinking problem by switching up his sleeping schedule. He would get up a 3:30 AM so he could nap through his "danger zone" period from 3:00PM to 8:00 when he would consume alcohol. When he woke up at 8:00 PM, he would eat and get ready for bed since he would be getting up early the next day.

It's best to stop eating 2 to 3 hours before going to bed so that wouldn't have been healthy unless he finished eating by 830 and didn't go to bed til at least 1030. But then that would only be 5 hours of sleep which isn't good either.

@@lamnuck Are you fn serious? Get off your high horse and take a look at the fact that being an alcoholic is way worse than eating too close to bedtime. Once he's overcome the alcoholism for a certain amount of time he can tackle the other things but that was obviously number one in priority and difficulty.

Honestly. Overcoming trauma, become your true authentic self, your inner child. Heal, and I mean really heal. From inside, start listening to your gutfeeling. That is what will be your most valuable tool against all of this. Everything else is just extinguishing fires. Not taking control over the root issue.

I completely agree. But, dealing with the underlying trauma is easier when you feel supported physically. So taking vitamins, minerals and particularly amino acids definitely help. The physical, mental and emotional all work collaboratively.
I'm 28, but I have been relatively addicted to video games since I am 3 years old I believe, I started binge drinking at 13, I remember the first time I ever binged, my body looved it. Smoking since I'm 15, binging p*rn since I was 13, exercising a loot since I'm 13 aswell, anxiety/depression/suicidal varied from 14 to 26 years old, I feel physically addicted to many many things in my life up to this day and having sequels of my mental health issues, even tho I've been working on myself/thinking about all these the entire time I've been doing them. I'm watching your videos for a long time and I find it quite interesting that I always did a lot of things you advice , sometimes without even knowing scientifically that it is helping me, like I'm taking Niacin ( with other vitamins... ), for like 6 months now I attempted ( with no deep motivation/conviction ) to stop smoking 4 or 5 times, never managed to handle my 3 weeks later cravings, just not livable, I stopped going out to not start drinking 5 months ago, after 1 beer I just can't stop, and I can't go out without 1 beer I attempted to stop masturbation few times, after 3 days I'm just going crazy mentally/physically Last time I stopped playing video games, I was binging all the listed above, Working out 4/6 times a week, only habit I truely can enjoy and feel is worth letting myself going in. I'm doing good these days, but I believe some people like me are physically screwed, or at least need a huge and constant amount of efforts/research/test to balance themselves, from my perspective. In additional to what Dr. Berg says about Niacin and NAD being helpful for overcoming addiction, I believe that NAC is also helpful, alongside, methylene blue and grounding. I believe that symptomatic of addictions is the inability to truly rest. I've found that taking methylene blue and sleeping grounded makes for extremely deep sleep. Our body is very resilient. I will be praying for you. I know our church has a group for people recovering from all addictions. As I’ve spoken to many of them over the years, they’ve told me that the only true and lasting change comes through relationship with Jesus. This makes sense since we were designed to be in fellowship with Him and when we’re not, we resort to all kinds of other things to make us feel whole. I will pray that the Lord makes Himself real to you in a way you can’t deny and that He helps you turn from your addictions and gives you lasting peace. 💗

i'm 59 and used to drink pretty much every day 3-6 pints of beer. 4th of May last year i stopped, bought alcohol free beer for about 3 weeks, then stopped that too. hopefully i am done with it, my only regret is not doing it sooner.

I quit alcohol, smoking and drugs after years of trying. I tried many things, supplements, healthy food, exercise to overcome the physical problems, the one thing that worked best for me, by far was cold showers. Don't know if it will work for everyone but worth the try. Number 2 was fasting for 24 hours.

I've been taking Niacin in doses of 250mg early morning before shower and at bedtime. The flush lasts anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes but I don't mind it knowing the true benefits of it. The flush proves it is working and gets easier as your body adjusts. Yes the redness, heat and tingling are intense however, your mind can make that much worse if you allow it too. Self-control is key not fear. Your body will thank you. Great video!!

I have a painful autoimmune disease and have been on opioids for over 20 years but when my insurance stopped paying for my regular meds and wanted me to start fentanyl or morphine, I quit all of it. It was a rough couple weeks but that was 4 months ago and I don’t have any desire to take anything. Pain is there but my head is clear.

After lots of prayers to God, looking myself in the mirror and repeating that I need to say no to Sugar, and watching/listening to the numerous videos by the Dr. Berg that detailed the physical harm that Sugar causes to the body; I have finally overcome my addiction to Sugar!

I'm currently in the hospital with a enlarged and bleeding seen. I am a full blown alcoholic, smoke like a chimney and smoke weed. Since I got in here I haven't even had a craving for any of them.

If I were you, I'd take it very seriously, my brother died this year from liver failures in his sleep. He was only 41 but drank spirits habitually.. I wanted to take him out bush for a couple of months but I couldn't get him to agree.. I gave up 13 months ago and I will never drink again. It's a poison and I treat it as such.

I quit smoking without consciously trying to for no reason. It’s like my body decided it was time. I just stopped buying them one day and never picked it up again.

Thanks Dr Berg. Hidden unhealed emotional wounds often play a direct role in substance abuse and over eating. Humanity suffers on the whole with feelings of being not good enough or unworthy. We also deal with trauma that often kicks us to seek a way out. It’s a vicious cycle. With eating, we overeat to protect ourselves if we’ve suffered from abuse or we eat to nurture ourselves if we didn’t feel loved as a child. There are many reasons people turn to alcohol and drugs but in my view not necessarily to get a boost of energy. I will try Niacin to see if it helps with my weight loss. Love you and your channel. You’ve helped tremendously. ❤

Had so many addictions. Suffered from alcohol, porn use, shopping to make myself feel good and better. I let God take control of my life and started living for Him and He took away every addiction. Not overnight. Not without struggles but I have been sober for 2.5+ years and the other vices have gone away. I tried everything and nothing lasted long term until I let God lead and my wants/needs/dependencies decreased. God bless you all. Jesus is the answer!!!

@@dustin4344 One morning I was sick and tired of everything so I got on my knees and said the most heartfelt prayer I've ever said. I surrendered myself and my way of living and I asked God to help me with my character defects (like laziness, lack of self control, etc). For the next week I continued to pray and talk to God about giving Him my life and he delivered with miracles every day. I also listen to a lot of Christian praise music, am plugged into an amazing church group and have new church friends. It takes time but give your life to God and surrender your old ways 1 day at a time. IT WORKS!

Being a Muslim I tried to quit smoking several times and I couldn't and one day after Prayer I raised my hands and asked my Creator to Help me quit the bad habit and after that prayer I didn't even finish that last pack it was 2013 and still I can't stand the smell of cigarettes

i quit drinking coffee. it wasn't doing much for me anymore. i was tired of paying for it and tired of making it. at first i tried to replace it with tea but i don't really like tea. so i tried replacing coffee with hot water and it worked. drinking a steaming cup of hot water now.

Crazy timing. My mom is 70+ and has been smoking for over 50 years. And She's finally going to try to quit for real next week. I'm gonna look into this.

I was getting wasted on weed and whisky 3 times a week. I prayed and things happened that made me quit. I didn’t think I had a problem but I did. Now no depression, better mood and my mind turned back on. Also my mood is 10x better. Just pray

Thank you! I’ve switched to a paleo diet, and I’m feeling better. I know my smoking addiction needs to go because I’m still not where I want to be energy wise. I still lack the motivation to exercise, which is my ultimate goal (ex gym junkie here). This has been very valuable information!
I'm only addicted to caffeine. I used to smoke and drink, but quit. Caffeine is the hardest for me to quit.
I had a LOT more than a “flush” . I literally thought that my skin was melting! I freaked out, and I was screaming. I didn’t realize what it was from. My husband made the connection. Thank God he was there, because he told me to get into a cold shower and I did. I was shivering from the cold, and still feeling like I was burning from the inside. I was in there for over 5 minutes before it finally subsided. I believe the whole episode was about 15 minutes. I didn’t know that there was a non-flush type of Niacin.

I took 1 500 mg and turned into a lobster. My husband thought I was going to die. Mine didn't subside as soon as yours, it was hours !! I'm afraid to take it again even with low dose.

I definitely needed to hear this. I've been trying to figure out a way to get back on the keto plan and redump the cigarettes. They're a nuisance. But it seems that every time I drop them, I end up doing the sugar or carbs again. It's quite frustrating. Hoping this helps🙏

I love the niacin flush. It helps if I have a cold. However it hasn't helped with addictions or energy, I didn't take a high enough dose. I have heard it can help you get off nicotine since it binds to the same receptors. I really want to try the high dose now. I'm hopelessly addicted to caffeine and nicotine lozenges, plus I don't have enough energy!!! If this helps I will be OVER THE MOON!!!!!!!

Nicotine lozenges are way better than cigarettes (although they do have some unhealthy additives)., but nicotine is not actually bad - it’s in tons of vegetables! Have you tried p@tches? Less toxic. Niacin & nicotine patches sounds like a great way to fight things off!

Started on Niacin after watching your videos and others. There is a noticeable improvement. Across the board. I take the 500 MG prolonged release. I will try 2 a day now. I am 70.
Nicotine, Alcohol & Drugs is easy. Sugar is the tough one to stop.

SUGAR OMG. What a beast!!! What is more interesting is I realised my EXTREME sugar cravings weren't even mine. It is actually the overgrowth of fungus in my body THANKS TO F*ING BIG PHARMA - I have been pumped full of antobiotics and medications that provided the perfect habitat for this fungus!!!! Its like having a symbiotic/parasitic relationship. Think Venom (like the movie)... has caused me to turn into a psychopath at times by overloading my liver and making me afraid of NOTHING... explains why youll hear me muttering - just eat the M&Ms... DO NOT EAT OTHER PPL!!! Omg what a disaster have we created with this antibiotics s**t. I have to starve my "Venom" , by avoiding sugar and anything that remotely reassembles sugar. Venom is angry. I am just constantly bewildered by herx reactions that NO GP HAS EVER WARNED ME ABOUT. Thank the lord for Dr Berg. You are a true hero! 😊

I was addicted to soda without knowing it. Then I tried not drinking soda and I was going crazy. It took two months of not drinking soda before my addiction went away.
I never had a problem with cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs of any kind. My biggest addiction is food, specifically junk food. I have multiple diseases like diverticulosis, fatty liver disease, and gastritis because of it. Before I started dieting in December, I felt like I was on the verge of death every single day. It was like a perpetual flu. Breathing was harder, walking was harder, even thinking was harder. I'm just about to close out my 4th month of dieting and am 56 pounds down. 20 minutes of moderately intense cardio daily with a 1500-1800 calories per day diet is doing wonders. I haven't been able to completely cut out junk food, but I have ditched soda, liquid calories, fast food, and bakery junk for good. Hopefully good health is in my future. I still get pains in my body, but they're much more manageable than before. Exercise has also been a miracle in my fight against anxiety and insomnia.

Dr. Berg, when i saw this video I got very excited. I watch your videos regularly and was recently searching them for joint health/ carpal tunnel issues and came across Niacinamide through your videos. I needed a joint issue addressed and i thought it would help me with mood. Dr Berg, i also am struggling with a terrible addiction and it is something i am desperate to address. It is one of the most insidious addictions. My question is, will Niacinamide work? I bought some recently and ive sort of stopped taking it in favor of other things. Will Niacinamide work the same aa Niacin for helping me through withdrawals? Please let me know. Im at wits end. So much is on the line and this info could help greatly.

I loved the flush. Then there were too many mainstream articles showing that niacin doesn’t really help but can affect the liver and raise Hba1c and Lp(a)? So I started bookending my weekly or biweekly niacin trip with Berberine (maybe 4 hrs before and after to deal with the sugar dump?) and NAC to protect my liver. All this was fine, and doing my niacin was like getting a deep tissue massage for my muscle soreness. Recently I have slowed down because I find niacin before my cardio impairs my output and if I don’t workout on that particular day, it causes insomnia. Also I figure I need to let my muscles go through soreness, doms, and inflammation without antioxidants and this chemcial masaage to reap the full benefit of my workout. Hormesis or whatever. So now I use niacin very sparingly. 😢

I use niacin before a detox bath & the 2 together work great.
When I quit smoking cigarettes at 22 years old I would actually buy a pack of cigarrettes and destroy them. Pick up a ciggerrette and rip it apart. So as to say "I don't smoke cigarettes I rip them up in my hands." If I pick up a cigarette now I'll tear it up. 🚭 I'll never forget before I quit A friend of mine he saw me smoking and he asked me : What's wrong with air?
You need a reason to give anything up. I had both my knees replaced in 2022, and my wife ( who is a nurse) casually mentioned to me a few weeks after my first surgery that alcohol won't help with inflammation. Haven't touched a drop in 20 months. Wasn't the plan, just happened. Feel better for it.

This is true, Dr Berg. I did quit nicotine years before I found your channel. It was hard but possible for me as I took a good quality B Complex back then while incorporating other practices such as mindfulness meditation, physical exercise and learning other disciplines that involve mental concentration and focus which helped me overcome successfully. Quitting nicotine and sugar have been the best decisions ever with formidable good results. Thanks for your continuous helpful content 🙏🏻
