@@yoannesleonardi6799 at The begining they used Flash but at some point they changed software to Toon Boom Harmony

Hot tip: draw the extremes and breakdowns and leave blank frames between them to get a sense of movement. Don’t do the inbetweening. Clean the extremes and breakdowns then do the inbetweening with clean lines. It saves so much time and stops animation from being choppy if you’re not very good at cleaning.

Excuse me, with "cleaning" the extremes and breakdowns, do you mean making a lineart that looks smooth and in a single line rather than a sketch? And if it's the case, how can you draw the inbetweening with the clean lines from the start? I think I would do messy lines first like a sketch

I studied animation and no one had EVER mentioned copying and pasting parts directly from the model sheets onto your animation draft to make staying on model easier. This is honestly such a game-changer tutors should be legally obliged to talk about it lol

⁠​⁠​⁠@@peph9750 Idk what kind of school the ogc went to, but using copy and paste in animation was taught to me on year one. There’s a quote my teacher uses “It’s a tool just as anything else in animation is.” And “It depends on the animator if they can make it work, not on the tool”. With your point you should never depend on ANY tool in animation not just copy and paste. I could say “Keyframes are a bad habit” because so much animation depends on it, but I don’t, because saying something in animation is a “bad habit” when it’s working, and looks good is the stupidest thing I’ve heard for a while. And if someone can’t animate without a specific technique or a tool: Never blame a technique, but always blame the user.

9:43 this is VERY handy to know. I never thought of tracing the character sheet for parts of the character.

Honestly this gotta be the best art youtube channel. They actually TEACH and break down fundamentals rather than taking the "this is how I do it" approach most use. I've taken a lot of art classes and consumed a lot of content in the form of tutorials and what not, but man these guys are so gifted at simplifying things! Also, uh yeah they're hella funny and cool too

this is pretty much how I animate, but its not a terribly interesting topic for a video so...

I feel like tracing the model is a good thing, even in art. It helps get the proportions right, and eventually you won't need them because of how many times you've drawn that character.

I was pretty confused about why my animations looked choppy before watching this video. I realised it was because I didn't follow the 12 rules of animation lol- Right now I'm trying to improve my animating skills by starting over again with the ball. Thank you so much for being such an inspiration!

Here's to remembering the first animation class where I created the classic bouncy ball animation and thought, "I'm going to make as many frames as possible to make this as smooth as possible." Pressed play and watched my ball snail down the screen... my professor didn't stop me. He wanted me to learn on my own, and then gave me extra time to complete the assignment, as he clearly predicted the inevitable failure. And gosh, I appreciate it. Learning through misstep keeps the lessons in my brain.

Lip syncing and acting is hard. I strongly recommend starting out with little 2-3 second gifs. Just get used to doing drawing 2 key poses and some inbetweens. 20 seconds sounds short, but it’s a lot of work.

@@sloppynyuszi I know, and I'm starting to realize that as I go along. And actually, I did make some small animations before, but I didn't mention those because I never finished most of them. The only one I did finish was a bouncing ball. The 20s thing is just something I push myself to do because I want to challenge myself when it comes to longer things, and learn the kind of pitfalls I fall into when animating a longer sequence. For example, while the first few seconds of rough key frames were pretty consistent, I noticed that I tend to make the character's head smaller as I go on, so I know to look out for that in the future! It's more of a learning experience I strive for, as of now.

After so long it has been like a year and 8 months since last proper episode, I am just soo happy

Honestly the first time I watched this I didn’t understand anything and immediately just tried to animate a character move, of course I failed, lost my interest and didn’t practice for like two months, now that school is almost ending though I had a lot more time practicing drawing and animation, came back here and finally starting to slowly understand and realizing how amazing you guys are, we had a class that also talked about the fundamentals of animation but honestly it wasn’t interesting and I didn’t really learn anything until I saw this vid again. You guys made this really interesting and fun to watch, amazing work! 👏👏👏✨✨✨✨

I've been looking for some practical tips for just some minor animating stuff (for like advancing my illustrations to pretty gifs without them looking stiff) and you actually delivered some VERY useful points here! The onion layering, drawing different body parts on different layers (oooofffffff cannot stress enough how useful it is) and stick figure drawings for starting It is honestly a good starting point for me, thank you so much!!

It's so reassuring to know it takes other people this long to animate

As someone who once was absolutely clueless and lost while doing animation, these tips are seriously helpful as a newbie (who may never even touched animation ever, I'd say) :' ) When I started getting back into animation in 2017, I was basically lost and kept questioning "how does one even animateeeee?!?!", but once I looked into some animation techniques as well as found out about the 12 principles of animation, it helped me sooo much into getting started with animation and helped me get a better understanding of how it all works/is put together, just a matter of practice from now and developing/learning more techniques (one key change for me was shifting away from pose-to-pose to straight ahead for each body part), and now I'm even amazed I can call myself a decent animator, got people and friends to say my animations look like Kekeflipnote's stuff, and getting 1st place for an advertisement contest (where I decided to animate the full thing for fun lol), and I don't animate regularly either (don't do that though, gotta keep going :o) so that's quite an achievement :' ) oh PS: smear frames are the best things ever to make

Do not attempt any form of animation until you do a ball bounce. Oh gosh I think I messed up oops well I'm just going to compare with my living island meme I didn't do anything but when I posted my tests I did the sketch and a ball bounce so progress!

Yo, something I find really important and often overlooked is layout. Having even just a simple one-point perspective grid when animating gives you a point of impact and helps you stay consistent.

I just started animating with smear frames and this really helped. Thx! My way of practicing animation is posting it as videos so my subscribers can tell me anything about the animation. Then there I am at home, imagining some more animations and stuff, also practicing my imaginative movement off my couch. I jump off it bc its bouncy enough for a jump movement :D But this video can actually help me in what my animation looks like. I was already practicing smear frames on my newest animation that i'm still making. I can't wait for y'all to see it! 58 frames on the animation so far, using 6fps lets my eyes develop to what I'm seeing. I might practice better fps soon, and yeah. I was also trying to do anticipation for my smear frames too. My smear frames usually have a little anticipation and mostly just squash and stretch animation, sometimes I use actual smear frames.

The film wolfwalkers has inspired me to learn animation and improve my drawing, I'm rather inexperienced but very keen on learning a similar art style. It'll be a long journey but a fun one :)

The only pro of finding this channel late was not waiting for this video for as long as other people here. Btw, A complete animation guide? LETSSSS GOOOOOO!!!

I had a class at Santa Barbara City College by a former Disney animator. Learning to animate this way, i.e. traditionally, is very useful even when you move on to CG or rigged animation. Look at Into The Spider-verse. It’s a CG film but it looks like a 2D one because it has all of these principles in it

Honestly, im gonna say thank you for this. I took ball bouncing for granted, and always thought it was something "stupid" and, I guess I shouldn't have let my ego take hold of actual skill, because this really helped out

You guys have no idea how excited I get whenever I see you've uploaded a new video. Whenever I've tried to do frame by frame animations I'd get discouraged by the fact it takes too long, and I always thought I was too slow. Knowing that you guys, professional animators took MONTHS to do this loop makes me realize this is just how hard animation actually is.

It takes a really long time. there were times when it was so overwhelming I had to put it down for a month or so. but I just kept coming back to it until it was done.

The cat with 3D glasses is vibing around like a pro dancer he is and he's loving it.

Don’t underestimate the value of this, I’ve taken several years of traditional animation classes, and the beginning is practically just this with much more practice and analysis of how to do /this/ better.

Every year you wait your drawing to pop up since 2019 👁️👄👁️

I was thinking, this is a great video to show any regular person. I'm sure there's plenty of people who aren't super into art or animation that might have wondered how a cartoon goes from an idea in someone's brain onto the big screen. I'd like to think it would help people better understand the time needed to produce quality content and allow for more patience and understanding between fans and show creators.

my problem was my animation was very constant [it looked choppy blobby] thanks for this video it deserves more than a billion views so

I have watched many videos about animation but I've always been really confused about in-between frames. This broke it down in such a simple way thank you very much for creating this!

For me it wasn't about the principles, it was about the approach. Far too many animation channels exist for so few to actually undergo teaching how you should apply and start these principles in executing an actual scene with actual characters for an actual production. Finding this channel again, I love how every video has a segment where these principles and lessons are actually executed and shown to animation learners starting from either scratch, rubble, expertise, or a decent foundation how to actually approach a scene and the required or recommended workflow that can work out on tons of programs especially modern animation ones. Its so hard to find a way to approach modern animation and its these kinds of videos that have revived my interests in it.

@April Chan Your comments are interesting. I do not see the lack of a bridge between technique and practical implementation the way you do. I suspect this is subjective. We all have gaps or holes or blank spaces in our process when we are learning. Even when enrolled in formal courses which ought to contain every step in graduated sequence, they do not always meet our individual needs and we may finish them without taking with us a consistent pathway from idea to execution. Good for you! that you have found such gratification here with BaM Animation videos!

Foolishly, I did a walk cycle and a little character animation before I did a bouncing ball or pendulum animation.

You have to learn something if was too hard to you I learn something even I don't know how I animating it or making it so learning is a best way to make you can do anything even it was hard anything I find it hard I learn it and I never stop myself and never give up because learn turn hard things into easy things
