    The rebellion of teaching people things for free is the greatest, most heroic, mostly godly and noble thing you could possibly do. We have deprived ourselves of knowledge so much today in favor of profit and it is heartbreaking, disheartening, and infuriating. Thank you for this gift.

    I've wasted over $50k going to college just to learn these things over the span of months while Alan does it in a single video. Alan isn't managing a class ofc, but still...this video is superior. It covers all 12 principles of animation AND has extra stuff which really helps and already makes it less intimidating, and it's in video form and I can replay it all I want. It's been almost a decade, but damn did the spark come back. Thank you so much for these videos, Alan!!

    I made the mistake of going to school for animation. They started me off in basic classes (figure drawing) so it was awhile before I finally got my first animation class that wasn't about design or storytelling (so no actual animating or sometimes even drawing taking place) What did this class involve? WATCHING. KZread VIDEOS. Also some videos from Richard Williams' series that you can find online easily enough if you know where to look but I think the school did pay for them. Teacher also barely helped us on assignments, was unapproachable and spent most of class working on his own animations, and seemed irritated if you needed help. A couple of us complained about it at the end of the year and felt unprepared for the next class. I ended up quitting the school because it was being turned into a diploma mill school (RIP RMCAD's credibility)

    Indeed the speed of learning from KZread videos will never be comparable to the speed of learning in classic education it does not matter if its college or university.... The only issue with youtube videos is that is hard to see the bigger picture on how things work in the real world industry. There's a lot of gaps and misinformation....

    I'm an aspiring animator working on my most beloved project entitled 'Mrs. Devious'. Although it's humor is meant to be thought provoking and mature, I also want for there to also be moments of physical comedy. For this, it is imperative that I learn these principles. Watching this video intimidated me, seeing as how many aspects go into animation, but it also gave me a new perspective that I'd not seen taking animation classes in school. Thanks so much for making this! It truly helps!

    As a seasoned "straight ahead animator" who has done it this way for over 20 years, this Pose to Pose lesson was quite a revelation. I will need to look into this more (still unsure how exactly to do it), for eg in an app such as Clip Studio, that means that you need to make a key pose every 5 or 10 frames, then insert extremes in between them. Which means you need to set the onion skin to "seeing previously 5-10 frames." This is quite interesting, I will definitely try it. I never went to Animation school, but look at how you can learn such a revelation on a video such as this. This video is excellent.

    I’ve been watching this video for years and I still think it’s the most beautiful thing on this website. It genuinely is the most pure, helpful, heart cleansing, genius video ever made. I know this comment might seem like a lot, especially for a video about the principals about the animation, but this video means so much to me and it would break my heart if it disappeared. Thank you Alan Becker, to creating an honestly nostalgic and meaningful video for me and the rest of us

    Been doing animations with flash professionel in 2015-2017 as a hobby(i still do that some times the last time i animated was 7 months ago with photoshop you can see the concept on my youtube channel shorts), i could tell that with each sequence you animate you discover techniques on your own to replicate the real world motion and tweak it with your touch, it's a sence you upgrade to achieve progress in your work. Such a beautifull feeling to see yourself can express your ideas in actions !! If you love animation keep on doing it it really is worth the shot !!!

  • @Over_easy_eggs

    @Over_easy_eggs

    It definitely depends on the style you're going for. Anime like you're talking about is generally more gritty/realistic than whimsical, so there are levels of exaggeration that probably aren't going to be hit in anime style animation. However,it's still hugely important to make 100% clear the action happening on-screen. Goku might not blob outward when he lands, but the force of the impact still needs to squash him down through how his knees bend and his chest follows through. The wind-ups for his punches might not be incredibly large, but perhaps they're emphasized with slow-mo or wind effects on the sides of the screen.

    I don't animate, but I study nature science. Most of the principles came from basics physics, such as the squash and stretch (elasticity and/or special relativity), the follow through and overlapping (inertia), the timing (graphical physics) or the slow in and slow out (acceleration). The staging, the secondary action, the appeal and the exaggeration are from psychology. The arcs and the solid drawing are physical biology and foreshortening in real life. And all of them are combine with years of animating experience. That is why those principles are still followed through until this day.

    Art originated from man observing the world around him and representing it through icons. Therefore, it makes perfect sense why the principles of animation would reflect real life.

    Meatcanyon is actually incredibly good with character design. His characters ARE ugly, I agree, but it's the uncanny valley vibe that he pulls off so well by exaggerating features to such an extreme while keeping it teetering on the edge of reality. He pretty much made his own version of caricature. Gross, but done very well.

    I've noticed that there are cases in animation where you'd want to deliberately ignore some of these. For example... Say you want more of a comedic effect from your punch, but still want it to be powerful; can skip the anticipation step to really emphasize the "BEGONE!!!" factor of it.
