How to Square your Miter saw

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video goes over the steps to setting your Miter saw Detent plate. This is one of the first and most important steps when setting up your saw. After setting your 90 degree detent the rest of the angles should be correct if not then you need a new detent plate. Good quality starts with accurate tools!!

If you have an old Kapex the first thing to check is the two fence halves are coplanar. If they are not in alignment then you can only have one side at 90 degrees. If your saw as ever had a kickback the chances are that the fence would have been bent inwards. Add a sacrificial fence to both sides. The sacrificial fence can then be jointed so the two halves are coplanar. Then adjust using the manual.

Before squaring any saw it’s a good idea to see if the blade is parallel to guide rails. If not it will never truly cut square. The only way I have been able to test for this is by taking a 12” wide board and clamping it down. Make a plunge cut with head of saw all the way back and with the blade still running lift the blade and pull the saw all the way out and mate up the cuts. They must match up perfect.

What feeler gage set are you using and where could one get it from? I like how they are individually sleeved loose in a folding pouch. Great tips.

Have you adjusted the bevel angle? If so did you have a way to do it with shims and feeler gauges?

2:03 why did you choose a .015 feeler gauge in between the block and plate? what made you know that thats how much you need to move the saw?

My DeWalt miter saw cuts 90 degrees no problem; however, when I try de 45 to make a frame there is always a gap. I tried the calibration many times but i cant get the 45 degrees right...always a very small gap.

HELP! I have a Kapex and followed your video to square my cuts. Using a 6" wide test piece, cutting from the left side I got it squared, however, when I make the same cut from the right side it's .28 off. I also tested the vertical cut and that's square. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You had a kickback, your fence is bent inwards. This is the first thing to check before you start. Are the two sides of your fence in the same plane.

I don't understand the purpose of "fitting the block" at 1:15. The gap where he put the wood there isn't even present on my new miter saw. Going to see if any more squaring videos that do the same. This one left me in a lurch. This video made it clear kzread.info/dash/bejne/jKOsmtisctDJfpM.html

@@thebuilditchannel8609 you’re wrong. A trained ape could set the 90. Getting the 45’s correct on a Kapex requires an astronaut. Just got my first (I have two) Kapex back from Festool via UPS. They “calibrated” it for only $279.00. I tested it in my workshop the next day. Terrible. My 22 y/o, neglected, never-once-calibrated DeWalt 12” c/s cuts better 45’s. Even Festool cannot calibrate their own saws. Simply stunning…..

@@thebuilditchannel8609 You need to revisit this subject and provide a LOT more detail concerning calibrating other than 90 degrees, because you clearly don't understand how it works. Even with the 90 set, you can still set the saw to the 90 position, then clamp it down, loosen the plate and adjust it IN and OUT, and slightly CLOCKWISE and C-CLOCKWISE to adjust the 45 cuts. Once you do that.....and get it right (which will take several iterations of adjusting and testing) only THEN will it be completely calibrated. And it is NOT because the plate is "not milled correctly".

Brilliant!! Set the 90 in the detent plate then loosen the detent plate and adjust plate to get 45 then tighten plate and everything thing should be great. You did move the plate from its position when the 90 was set but that doesn’t matter you can just reset the plate to 90 every time you use it and back to 45. I don’t know how I missed that, Thank You!!

You miss the part where I said to lock it down in the 90 position THEN loosen the screws and adjust for the 45’s? The 90 position wont change because position of the saw is physically locked. But you just keep on misunderstanding…..it should be obvious by now that anybody who truly understands how this works is trying to help you, but you’re not getting it. And trying to mock someone who DOES get it is merely doubling down on the ignorance.

This is not good technique and flawed. It will only calibrate it to 90 degrees. Your 45deg or other cuts will be wrong (unless you are very lucky).

@@thebuilditchannel8609 A much better method for 90deg is to use the 4 cut method, it can be found in the Kapex manual and all over the internet, it will work with any saw. As for the 45deg being out whilst the 90 is correct, imaging you have calibrated to 90, you have done exactly that ONLY calibrated to 90. There are 2 methods errors could happen at non 90 deg angles. Hypotheticaly if you could slide the scale further back by 1inch obviously your 45 would be out (the scale is only accurate at a fixed distance from the centre pivot) Now when you slacken all three screws you can slide the scale around (back and forth and also skew it). Also if you pivoted the scale around the centre bolt this would also introduce errors at both sides of centre. Both of these errors are possible and happened to me because the scale is free to move around because of the slack deliberately built in for adjustment., If you read your other comments this has happened to another person, correct at 90, out at 45. I have thought about it, may I ask you to think it over. (: FYI. I am just trying to contribute to the general knowledge of people looking for help and BTW I have got some really useful tip from your other videos, thanks for posting.

This video shows you how to adjust the detent plate accurately and efficiently. No matter how you test for square you need to adjust the plate. If your 90 is set then your 45 should also be set, if not then the detent plate is off and you need a new one.

@@thebuilditchannel8609 have you tried to understand what I said in my previous comment? Even if the detent plate is perfect, if you only adjust at 90deg to be correct at 90deg. Think carefully about what I said previously, there is deliberate wobble and slack if you slackened all three screws off which allows it to move other than in a perfectly circular (and parallel) path traced by the movement of the pivoting base. Rather than dismiss my feedback, please think about it discuss it.... There are other videos on KZread that explain it (although not easy to find)

@@thebuilditchannel8609 calibrate to 90 like you suggest and you will only calibrate to 90 (roughly). 4 cut is much more accurate. If you are banging together rough stuff it's probably fine. I try and make very accurate work, I need higher accuracy than your method allows. Other viewers can chose a method (high or low accuracy) that suits their needs.
