What about miters? I cannot calibrate mine accurately. The 90 (-0-) is spot on but 45’s R to L are all over the map. There is not one video on adjusting detent gauge plate accurately. Thanks for you vids. All are really helpful!

I got my Dewalt 7 1/4” cordless from about 1/64” (over 7 1/4”) down to .0025” using this method. It took me about 20 strips (at least), though. Next time I would use a dial indicator zero’d out against the blade. It is way too easy to tap by hand or hammer and overshoot the adjustment. FYI, when the wood strip is wider at its bottom then the top (which was against the fence), the blade is angled less than 90 deg and you must move the miter swing arm to the right. Its just the opposite if the top is wider than the bottom.

Excellent comment! I was wondering which direction I would have to adjust depending on the angle of the cutoff piece.

hi Gary, appreciate all your videos. question: how do you compare the festool miter saw to the bosch and why do you like the festool better?

Hello, my problem with my dewalt dw715 is that the right side of the fence is not square to the base of the Saw, it's slightly obtuse, so every time i am cutting on the right side of the blade with my piece standing vertically, it doesn't give me the best cuts. Every adjustment i can make I have according to the manual. Is this simply a manufacturing defect or something I can fix?

I would suggest going onto a dewalt forum and finding out the best solution for your problem.

It’s just the machining standards Dewalt and other brands use. I went through 4 dw780’s in a week getting them home and finding that issue and others, before the Dewalt rep just refused to exchange. And every other brand had similar issues so I was just stuck with it. Over the next 6 months I found the issue in 5 more saws in stores. I ended up having to take the back fence off and bolt it back down on a series of metal shims to twist it straight. The only issue was it was out in not 1 but 2 different ways yet. So then the back fences were now square, but the channel they adj left/right into was not parallel or in line from right to left side. So as soon as soon as I adj a wing out a little bit, they were out again.... And on top of that, the main centre platform of the saw could be set 90° to the blade, but on a 45° left mitre it would go out of parallel or flush to the wings on either side of it. So there was no amount of modification I could be willing to do that would fix it. Then the most frustrating part was after finding it in every new Dewalt 12” 780 I looked at, wherever I posted online, guys with the same saw would pipe up and say there’s had ZERO issues and was “utterly square”. Then only after long debates would I find out they were either hobby guys, framers or trim carpenters that have painters come finish their work for them after, so there was absolutely zero need for such accuracy in their work. And as I stated I was stuck with mine so I’ve had to just make it work, so that’s clearly possible, but VERY frustrating. One thing I did learn was that Dewalt makes some of the saws in Mexico, which could have explained the all the saws just in my country having that issue.

I know I'm 4 years late, but check Spencer Lewis from Inside Carpentry. He has a video on saw calibration (using a dewalt in the example) where he adresses this

Pretty good ... I gotta change my miter saw to something better .... can’t get a decent 90 at all

How is this a calibration? You haven't calibrated anything. Shouldn't the point of the video be to rectify a badly calibrated saw?
