I always thought that Chris is Muse's secret weapon. Amazing video, as always!

Not so secret, he's pretty much pronounced

Matt and Dom are very talented but they get their whole spacey aesthetics a lot from Chris' bass playing and setup.
I'd add one thing: strength. Chris plays really fast and precisely, but strikes the strings very energetically, so that the sound comes out loud and heavy. it's not just loud volume, he really plays using sheer force, and endurance

He is so precise that sounds like he's using a pick...

This is so true. The power of his fingers, his speed is magnificent. If they perform around one and a half hour, he probably only uses pick for two or three songs in certain parts. Everything looks easy on him. He's truly a natural talented man.

Saaaame dude
I really think Chris' basslines with Muse are really underrated. Thank you for having this video. If you could also do one for Mark Stoermer of The Killers, that would be awesome!
Undisclosed Desires is my favorite slap bass song 💙
I discovered Muse when they opened for U2. I've been a fan ever since. Chris's bass lines are too complex for me, but man, can I appreciate them. And I love all the sounds and tones he gets. A truly gifted bass player and band.

@@noahd395 Muse blew me away. I had never heard of them before that show. I became an instant fan. IMO they are the only other band that I have seen that can compete with U2 in stadium. They thrive on the big stage.
I'll add another one: find a good riff and repeat it over and over again in the song (new born, hysteria, uprising ecc ecc). It could sound derogatory but for me it is the opposite... it's also very difficult to play a riff over and over again without losing stamina and groove.

You're right, songs like Hysteria and The Resistance are really something to practice your stamina
@camu123789

And also important: keep building on the riff, change or add little things as the song progresses. Uprising is a great example of this.

I can play new born, but by the end my right hand is almost unusable and no sound actually comes out. it's really impressive how good of a bassist he is

Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel)?
I'm of course talking as the self-tought, almost-but-not-quite-intermediate bassist here; I once read in a random forum something along the likes of: "I don't know why some guys are so hyped on his (Chris's) lines, they're not even that complex". Now, I know I'm not a virtuoso, but I got in my favor a good sense of rythm and more or less a good ear, and "Hysteria", to name ONE song, is currently one of my personal goals. Plus I went from (upon listening to "Starlight"): "Oh, yet another band riding the Coldplay-piano-wave", to being a frank Muse fan. A lot of it is from Bellamy's creativity of course, but the other 50% is pure Wolstenholme's fault.

I dug more to Muse music after listening to Map Of Problematique last year (Yeah, I know Starlight is popular in my country but that didn't tickle me at first). I was just curious more about Matt's writing but then get addicted more to Wolstenholme. It's really Wolstenholme's fault. They're all talented anyway.
Mike Kerr for the band Royal Blood has some really good bass line riff on the first two albums you should make a lesson on Mike Kerr Royal Blood
I've seen MUSE be the butt of a ton of jokes but honestly I think they're perfectly fine. Chris is obviously a smart guy who knows what he's doing in his instrument.

@@zw_ncfc Yup. That's such a sad stance to have, though. Dates are irrelevant to the quality of the music. Their loss, tbh
Just to be clear, he is indeed a talented bass player, but 90% of the bass lines are actually written by Matt, with some Chris influences here and there. What’s crazy is how well he syncs with Dom. Everybody always mentions the fact that bass must lock in with drums. Muse is the way to do it. They sound like they almost are the same instrument.
@SkarrGaming
2 жыл бұрын
Chris could play the drums before he could play bass so that's probably why he syncs so well.
@geetraldinha

How do you know? Did Matt say it?
@nyreseum
Жыл бұрын
@@geetraldinha I remember reading Chris say it in an interview. For example, we know he wrote the basslines for Hysteria, Pressure, Reapers, Futurism. Also, he is the only one credited for the songs (his name). That is for drums as well, even though he can't really play drums, he beatboxes to show Dom what he has in mind and how to play it kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZx3q5uohZTLgLw.html
Thank you for the video!
Thanks. I ve asked for this!
Really enjoying this series! Keep up the awesome work ;) I would love to see videos about Carlos D from Interpol, Dave Beste from Rival Sons and maybe Connor Green from Haken.
Thanks Paul. This is the kind of thing I like to hear. It really helps to understand the theory and the context. This does a good job bringing the theory and the practice together.
Really loving these videos. Please keep them up!!
Alex Webster would be cool to see in this series
Amazing video about one of the coolest modern rock bass heroes! Do you know about Carlos D from the band Interpol? His lines are defining for the songs as he manages to play independent parts while both guitars are often pretty much rhythm. Would be great if you did an analysis of his playing
Would love too see a video on Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith
Thank you for this very insightful Video.
Just discovered this channel and I am so happy I did!
Thanks Paul! This series is fantastic! Your dissections and articulations of each bassist’s style is so enlightening. I listen to each one even though many bands I’ve never listened to. Great musicians can inform any curious musician regardless of the genre! Thanks!✌️❤️
Excellent 👌
Nice analysis! And it wasn't easy as there is A WHOLE FUCKING LOT going on in Chris's playing ;-) Muse is one of my favourite bands. Thanks for this video!
Amazing video!
How about something different how to replicate the sound of Joey DeMaio of Man O War's 8 string bass using a 4 string bass.
Great video man!
Great video!
Muy bueno.
Another great one. Would love to see a video about Leon Wilkeson or Mike Kerr soon
Can you do Christ squire next?

Good video. Well done.
Not a muse fan but liked this video... I can relate to the first couple examples.
