4:10 weirdly as you say this point about the pentatonic scale, Bombtrack actually features a non-pentatonic minor scale note (the 3-2-0 at the end of the phrase). Of course the riff is mostly based around the pentatonic anyway. Love the vids!

Paul, what source did you use to determine that Tim Commerford has a light touch? I ask because Tim has previously stated that one of the most essential aspects of his tone is that he plays with an extremely hard touch, something he specifically focused on after learning about the technique from Geddy Lee. In fact, most of the legendary growl in Tim's tone has nothing to do with the amp, but rather is the natural growl from plucking EXTREMELY hard on fresh strings. This is evident because the growl is present in Tim's DI signal BEFORE it's patched into any pedals and amps.

Tim's basslines are the glue that hold it all together, he enables Tom to go on his wacky solos, and when I picked up a bass to learn his lines I was amazed at how simple yet effective his stuff is. It falls apart without him.

Great video. What Tim also has done a number of times is use some kind of fat and bassy overdrive\distortion\fuzz. E.g. in songs like Testify (RATM) or Gasoline (Audioslave).

Not a lot of love from you for Timmy C, disagree with you on this one Paul. He plays finger style, he slaps, he plays chords, he’s always experimenting and changing his sound/tone. He def doesn’t play softly, he wails away with his fingers, and his groove is absolutely insane. He also doesn’t mostly play at a slow tempo, what about RATM is slow?! Maybe a little on audioslave, as was the point. And the only 2 reasons he’s good is because of Brad Wilk & Tom Morello?! Yes him and Brad are one of the top rhythm duos in rock/heavy music. But you think Nikki Sixx, one of the most boring and unoriginal bass players is good? I’m confused. I love your videos and usually agree with you, but you couldn’t be more wrong this time. Do Troy Sanders next pls!!!

I think that he follows Morello is a myth. He created so many great leading bass lines, like most of Evil Empire and many Audioslave songs. In my opinion Morello does not really know what to play over those lines and chooses to play one chord or some noise, like in Testify, Without a Face or Roll Right.
