Wow, I had no idea skim boarding was an actual sport. I had a skim board and tried it but I fell off and hurt my arm, but now I want to try it again. Austin explains things very well and this will help me a lot. Thank you.

Hey Austin.. I bought a 48" Slapfish skimboard for my son and I, after watching you and Blair videos... Taken it out twice. Yesterday I dropped the board and it flipped causing it to slash my shin and creating a gash that didn't stop bleeding till I got home that evening... You guys make this ship look like a piece of cake... HAHA!! Im not giving up! This 40 year old guy, will ride a wave sooner or later... Or Ill just stick to bodyboarding... Thanks for the Tips!!

I think for a lot of people learning, the arm swinging you mentioned will be the final piece of the puzzle for them to get the one step into muscle memory. It's so obvious now that you've said it, but it's something I never thought of when teaching friends how to one step. I would only go as far as to tell them to start dropping the board when they take that last step with their back foot.

Thanks for the tutorial. The only thing that confused me a little bit was on the arm-swing section when you drop the board, it's not in front of your back foot so it's pretty much a no-step drop. That's a bit different from the earlier section where you show to drop the board in front of your dominant foot, then take one step, then stamp on the backplate

You'll naturally do what is best for you from the get go. Most probably if you're right handed you're regular, if you're left handed you're goofy. Otherwise if you know you are left footed then you'll probably prefer goofy. Otherwise just practice both stances and one of them will feel more natural than the other.

I kind of skateboarded when I was younger, but never tried any cool tricks... I once took a surfing lesson and stood up my first wave, and loved it. I honestly wish I never had to stop going wave after wave. Would y'all say this is harder to do than surfing or skateboarding.... or even wakeboarding? I've never done skimboarding before.

What if you are goofy but right footed? Meaning I drop the board like regular footed and have to 180 jump and step on right foot first and right foot forward. Super awkward and can never get the one step drop. I take about 3 or so steps after the bird is dropped before I can get on the board.

Ryan Akins Honestly you should just get the goofy drop down with your left hand at the tail, because learning to 180 one step drop is too much of a pain. I’m the same way you are but I just learned to drop on the left side and it’s going very well

Buy Zum speed wax from Amazon and use it on the bottom of your board. If you made a mistake and used "surf wax" on the bottom of your board, that's your problem. Use a plastic paint scraper and scrape all surf wax off the bottom of your board, then apply speed wax and try again. Your board needs to glide easily on the sand like shown in the video.
