How to Shorten .. SHORTS - Tailor's Tips for an EVEN Hem!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hello friends! In today's video, I wanted to show you how to do a hem on a pair of shorts to shorten the shorts. I know this may seem simple but it is something that even highly experienced tailor's find tricky. It is really easy to mess it up, which is why I wanted to share my tips on this task! If you find this video useful, please don't forget to like, comment, share, and subscribe.

My dear mother-in-law taught me to do the hems with the second method (The doing nothing method!). thanks for showing us the alternative! I love when geometry and sewing go hand in hand!

I have so much respect for tailors. The amount of detail and attention and measurement to a garment to make it look good and lay right and wear properly, etc. I think your talent and skills are admirable. I love watching your videos and I appreciate them.

Yes, your tutorial makes so much sense now to me & why this happens. Before, I could see that there was too much material @ the seams, but I didn’t really know how to fix that. When I finished, truth be told it wasn’t a very attractive hem & I wasn’t happy w/it. I wanted to rip it out & start all over only not w/ the same results if I could help it? There’s a word for that: “insanity”. Doing the same thing over & over again, but expecting different results. Thank you for enlightening me about this matter, & know that it’s not just me.

Yes. I can tell that I've seen this very, very often. You are not alone. Cheers 😊
🤣 the second option on the first pair of pink pants would really set off my ocd about doing things “right” 🤣🤣🤣 but as “right” is in the eye of the beholder who can say what is right??!! Thanks for showing so many ways to do this, you seem to be the only place on you tube I can find such practical solutions 😊
I love that you give us more options. I always struggle with that and now i know how to fix shortening my short. Thank you for sharing this video with us! ❤❤

I have always hated when customers bring in shorts for hemming. The things you teach in this video are going to help SO much. It never occurred to me to fold the seams to draw the line, I have always measured and calculated how much I need to taper and it’s a miserable chore. I also never understood how to manage the V at the side seams. The shorts I’ve done have always been accepted by the customer, but I can see my mistakes and I didn’t know how to improve. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU.

I'm so glad it was helpful! We are not alone. We all tailors face similar problems, and my motivation is to create conversations so we can help each other. Thanks for watching! 😊
Most people can't wear stuff straight off the rack, or our bodies expand/contract and clothing needs minor alterations to get a good fit. It's so empowering to be able to do these things for yourself. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and helping us to help ourselves. 💖💐

Thank you for posting this. I was going to ask you to do a tutorial on cutting jeans off to make "cut offs" I am assuming same principle is used for cutting off jeans to the new. length want the shorts (cut offs) to be. I will have to watch this tutorial several times so I can understand all the great info provided. I could sew that cuff in the 70's but alas over the years of not using it I have forgotten how to do it. It does make a nice no flop over cuff especially on women's trousers.

This is great, thank you for explaining this so well! Do you have a video on how to turn long sleeve shirts into short sleeve? If not it would be wonderful to see you explain this - it's a similar issue, but made even more difficult as the sleeve angle is so steep....and then there's the flat felled seams to deal with....a video showing how you tackle this would be brilliant!!

Great information! My problem is knowing which seam on a felled seam I need to measure from. If I use one seam on one leg and the other seam on the other leg I end up with cockeyed shorts [or pants].
@DowntownTailoring
10 ай бұрын
Oh! Yes. This doesn't work when the fell seam isn't exactly on the center. To avoid this inconvenience, try to place your pants very stretched out over the table and cut the two legs at once as you see on the video. I hope this helps! 😊
Your Tutorials are so Good. Thank you so much. I have problems to shorten Jeans 👖 into shorts. It looks not good, i don’t know how to cut. Measuring from the seam? Sorry my englisch isnt very well 😅❤
I appreciate this video. I am having a problem with shortening a tapered sleeve. The factory seam was sewed a little twisted. I am going to open the seam and see if I can use your technique to hem the sleeve.

I just last week shortened three pairs. Yes, I ran into this issue. I did the second method where I angled the stitch line but it wasn't enough to straighten out the hem so there was a large gap when I folded it up. Not very nice looking. I will have to be more careful cutting next time so the cut is perpendicular as you demonstrated.

Using the first technique when you angled the side seam because of difference in width at hem, will this method work when shortening slacks ?
Do you have a tutorial on how to fix shorts that ride up or look shorter between the legs?

I always stitch from the outside of the garment. I feel the stitching never looks as good from the underside, even with effort put in to balance thread tension just right. It just always looks a little less good for some reason. 7:37 vs 7:39 it's just a very slight difference, I know, but the stitched side always looks a little better.
