    The latest version of Windows 10 includes a utility for converting MBR installations to GPT (so that you can enable UEFI and still have the system boot) called MBR2GPT. This way you don't have to reinstall Windows to use Optane.

    I installed Optane on my computer about 6 months ago. It was the biggest hassle I’ve ever had to deal with. It took around 2 days to configure everything. The reason for this is Asrock (the maker of my mother board) makes it so that only a 2 or 3 of the 6 SATA ports on the mother board support Optane. So it was the matter of just changing what port my hard drive was plugged into. If you’re having trouble with installing Optane, and you’ve followed each step, trying simply changing the port your hard drive is plugged into

Or for 78-80€ i found several 200-220 GB SSD which, if you use say 100 GB as a System drive, would mean booting is faster and you still have 100 GB available to use as cache - more than 3 times that of optane. So waht was your point again?

    Yeah iv used a Samsung 960 evo for boot/some apps and a 2tb mechanical drive + Samsung SSD for games caching for the last year with great success - SSD caching actually works pretty good for boot drives and just as well for storage/secondary drives, you can actually hear the HDD thrashing every boot if cache is disabled (steam loading etc). Also note - you need a Z series board for full support with socket 115x.

    I'm certainly not a techy, but I thought I'd tell you that I recently bought an Alienware R6 with Optane memory. It has all the good stuff, a 2 TB hard drive, an i7-7700 liquid cooled cpu and Intel 1080 video card, etc. And so far, it appears to be everything I want or need. It functions beautifully in that it boots quickly and loads my regularly used programs at what seems to be an ever quicker pace each time I use them. Of course, it is still extremely new for me so this may just be my imagination, but I do love my new system! Thank you so much for your channel as you've answered many of my questions and taught me a lot, all while being very entertaining to boot... pun intended.

    This is a great option. I have invested in a 1TB SSD to use as a game drive... I float around to many different games from many different clients - Steam, Origin, Oculus, Battle.net, etc... So I have filled my SSD and only have a small portion of my games downloaded... Buying an SSD to house all of this would be twice as much as this option. I for one am a fan of this and have bought into it - just came in the mail today!!. Looking forward to setting this up and getting the rest of my games primed and ready!

    For those that have it installed and just want to know what to do in BIOS and beyond: 1: Ensure that the SATA mode setting in system bios is set to support Optane. 2: Also ensure that UEFI boot, M.2 Port Remapping, and Intel Rapid Storage Technology are enabled. 3: Disable a setting called Compatibility Support Module (CSM). These setting are typically already correct but if they are not, your system will refuse to boot. 4: Once it boots up, Download and install the Optane Driver and Software. 5: After installation, open up your Optane Software and enable the optane module. 6: Restart computer and that is it.

    Hey whatever happened to those 5-dimensional discs that were supposed to last 1000 years? I remember reading about it 2 years ago, I think. Although, I think those were for archive storage, not regular usage. Also, optical transistors would be a lot faster than regular transistors because light travels a lot faster than electrons. However, I think that might not be as fast as we think because while electrons do travel very slowly in a circuit, the field still travels at the speed of light. If the field travelled at the same speed as the electrons, it would take forever to turn on a light.

    One thing this Optane booster will do is make decisions for you. Like weather "this" or "that" file needs to be cached. It will basically "learn" what you need, so while 32GB may not seem like much, it will always be the "best 32GB" you need. Once a cheap SSD is full, windows will suffer, and you will have to go "pruning" your SSD drive, manually deciding which games, and which files to transfer over to your mechanical drive. That will take minutes, and as we all know, there is NO WAY to get those minutes back. Don't be reckless with your life minutes man, just buy an Optane.

    Hey, Linus, I appreciated your stance on doing tests on things that you knew the answer to but did anyways for verification. Could you actually address the other half dozen hardware, software, and price combinations to Intel Optane instead of just comparing it to SSHDs? There's other caching software out there (Intel's RST included but not exclusively and would work with AMD) and I'd really like to see how all that stacks up when you consider price, performance, and general ease of use or stability. Cuz, right now, all I got is a lot of Intel Optane talk like it's the only option.

    What a coincidence. I just posted a topic about intel optane on LTT forum last weekend and i just crash the exact isues mentioned in video. OS boot drive in legacy mode and enabled CSM. But you also forgot to mention two important things. Intel optane does not support PCIe NVMe drive and also it only speed up your boot drive. So if you are using Samsung 960 as OS drive and HDD as data drive, this technology is pretty useless to you.

    For those power users with 1TB+ of SSD, No optane was not (initially) intended for you. But it allows manufacturers to offer sub-$500 casual consumer/business PCs using 1TB+ HDDs that perform basic functions nearly as fast as a well built machine with more than double it's price with equal amounts of storage. Don't knock it till you experience the value/speed ratio yourself. All future PCs for the office will be Optane, less time waiting for loading applications adds up to money saved fast.

    Same here. One things most of these commentators skips over is that after installation there is really nothing to "manage". You have 2TB of storage, Optane will manage and cache the most used data, so you don't have to think about it. ever. I have had SSD's in the past, and being a mostly poor person I can say they ALWAYS fill up. Deciding which games to delete got real old, real quick.

    Hi Linus, I purchased this little memory gadget, I disabled CSM Support and it just reboots back to the bios screen, you seem to just brush over the whole issue by saying just re install windows, which i cannot do, all i get when running the intel software is Bios configuration is not compatible with optane, i did get past that and still a message came up saying chipset was no good yet my my board is a Z370 HD3. :) Nightmare, i have initialized the disk...... and not sure where to go with it, without buying a new copy of windows and re doing the whole thing all over again. :)

  • @LaserWoodShapes

    @LaserWoodShapes

    6 жыл бұрын

    You cannot install windows to the Optane. Nor can you install a "fresh copy" to optane. Your system needs to have windows already installed for the Optane software to install onto, and it does not show up in your File Explorer as a "drive". It does it's job in the background. I have Optane, and it's super fast. Faster than my son's SSD as a matter of fact. If your system is compatible with Optane just get one. 70 bucks. easy.

    Is it possible to get an m.2 riser and run two intel optanes?

  • @awizardfromoz
    @awizardfromoz6 жыл бұрын

    Son built his first PC & selected the 32GB Optane to work with a 4TB WD black HHD. You need to press F6 during Win10 install to setup the HDD in GPT mode then format as one big drive space. After your system is fully operational, windows & drivers all installed, then install the Optane driver and enable it- not before. Note: it takes a long time for the Optane to populate its memory so be patient! We achieved a consistent boot time of less than 15 seconds & apps should load up to 90% faster AFTER they have been run for the first time. The intel & Gigabyte docos are terrible so ignore them, they’ll just confuse you. Good Luck! It’s worth it.

  • @LaserWoodShapes
    @LaserWoodShapes6 жыл бұрын

    I have just purchased and installed my Optane drive. It was dead simple. slip in drive into the M.2 socket, Install the Optane driver from intel, Restart a couple of times and BOOM! Instant SPPPPEEEEEDDD! Windows now boots hyper quick. Chrome opens instantly, as does just about every other program (after the SECOND time your load the program of course) Pros - Fast boot, and fast programs. Drop in speed (no need to reinstall windows). Cheap (70 bucks) Cons - only 32 Gigs, but that may not be an issue, since it's not a drive in the traditional sense. I built this system knowing I was going down this route, but if I had more money I might have just gotten a regular SSD. But this was a fast, easy, cheap upgrade that is working great so far.

    All the data is still on your mechanical drive, so there is no data loss issue. So far my Optane delivers snappy performance, every time. Not really sure where the "inconsistent and unpredictable" idea you have comes from. 3 simple steps. Install drive, Install driver, enjoy new speed with no need to reinstall windows, or any games and programs.
