When setting up my streaming PC it gave me a lot of hassle and research to do. At first I thought "huh, I have an Elgato HD60 Pro in my main rig, and spare PC parts from upgrades... let's make a streaming PC!" In my head, using the HDMI from my main PC to the capture card, then using the HDMI output on the capture card to my monitor would be the least of the issues. I am getting a video signal, and it's recording it so what could go wrong? Well here's a list of things I researched and eventually fixed: - I want my mic plugged into my main rig, and to talk to my friends on Discord through my main rig. - Having desktop audio split to my headphones AND the second rig. - Using the HDMI output on the capture card locked me to 60fps (when I use a 144Hz monitor) and introduced noticeable input lag. - Using a dedicated HDMI to the capture card, and two cables plugged straight into the monitor. How would I duplicate the DisplayPort and HDMI to the capture card and keep audio? - Using RDP prevented me from using an external 3.5mm aux in and optical in. And I wanted to keep RDP because it allowed me to stream my mic natively while plugged into my main rig. - Creating the least hassle possible (i.e. using only 1 mouse and 1 keyboard for both rigs, file transfers, and generally making it seamless and quick). - Fixing x264 lag on an i7 6700k which is more than powerful to handle x264 at 1080p 60. - Getting video, audio (mic and desktop duplicated), and file transfers to all be duplicated to both systems with no fuss or pre-setup. It took a bit, but I can now happily just turn on my streaming PC, launch a remote desktop and stream straight away with NO side effects. I can record videos and access the file instantly on my main rig. If anyone is having ANY issues with setting up a second rig just leave a reply. :)

OBS also released their NDI plugin which lets you stream over LAN directly to another machine and use that to encode. Way easier than getting the NVENC thing going.

+Techquickie Using NVENC to send the video signal to another computer on your LAN to transcode it there to a streaming bitrate is indeed a good option to avoid a capture card. But: What is the recommended setup here? As far as I can tell, you need an RTMP server to receive the pre-compressed content on the transcoding machine (e.g. Nginx with RTMP module) if you want to get the signal back into OBS, transcode and transmit to Twitch or whatever service. Are there other options, like using FFMPEG for transcoding? Both options kind of worry me, because I have no clue how reliable it would be. When I tested a low latency setup with Nginx as RTMP relay, OBS lost the incoming stream quite easily in case of a CPU spike or other events that occur every now and then. Or the latency varied each time. Additional latency in general is a huge problem IMO. Twitch is currently rolling out a low latency option and I've seen streams with 2.3s of total delay to broadcaster. If transcoding adds like 5 extra seconds because of buffers on both sides plus encoding and network, then that is not really a good alternative to an internal capture card and a powerful CPU to do everything on a single machine.
a 1070/1080 coding with nvenc can look pretty good when using restream.io and then sending to twitch, and or using ftl on mixer. you dont need a high end cpu for a second pc in this method. Magewell and ELgato have good 4k Capture cards. Sometimes i wish they would do a proper series on building rigs in different scenarios. Such as... audio issues, capture cards, using cpu and gpu encoding, creating your own transcoder, etc. there is so much half ass information out there that it leads people to spending way more then they really need to. Also, twitch has upped its bitrate as well. Believe it or not, but i find that i get better picture on twitch by not using twitch's ingest servers and instead use restream. I dont know why it looks way better than the potato output that twitch does for non partners but it works. its a serious option for free that people should be looking into
And what about graphics card encoding?

YES! DAMNED INTRO IS NO MORE!!
I was asking for more content related to streaming a while ago , but really really really this is not the way. WHAT are you talking about ? Dual PC Set up ? Shadow Play ? It really does look like this video was brought to us by INTEL. Forget about 1080p 60fps (actually , what the hell) and forget about your second PC dedicated to streaming only. Throw some benchmark from some games that are ANY relevant on twitch (was that Atila total war ? are you guys kidding me) and FORGET ABOUT shadow play (one button does it all means no way to tweak the output) FOR BEGINNERS : Dual ENCODING setup: H.264 (CPU intensive but crispy , 3500 kbps tops) for anything that is not CPU intensive and NVENC (here you can go up to 6500kbps with no meaningull performance impact ) for everything else (PUBG ,OW ,DOTA2,LoL) (set up on OBS Studio ,forget , AGAIN about Shadow Play) This is how I've been streaming for over 2 years. No upgrades needed before hand. Everything I know comes from something I read on the internet and my own testing. This video feels rushed AF (I still love y'all , but stop telling people they need to expend money to start to do something when they dont and the video is not even sponsored by any of thse companies.)
@rjfaber1991

TW: Atilla is actually one of the games I've watched the most streams of lately... It's beaten by Hitman, but I think it still holds second place. Don't assume there are no people who watch streams of games other than competitive shooters.
Just have OBS use the On-board graphics to encode the stream so your CPU and GPU don't do any stream encoding at all.
A second graphics card dedicated to NVENC encoding for example will also do a pretty good job. A 750Ti can do it. It's only if you stream in x264 (which is better quality than NVENC at lower bitrates) that you need a beefy CPU.
Aaaand nothing about encoding with NVENC, aight
@CrazyWeeMonkey
6 жыл бұрын
DR01D_Qs although you CAN stream with NVENC without losing much performance, the quality suffers compared to a x264 encoder; which means that you will need a higher bitrate for equal quality.
@Azureskies01

Because x264 is way better right now. Tell Nvidia to put some money into making NVENC useful. A R5 1600 or better is all you need to stream most games right now.

CrazyWeeMonkey well yes, I know because I stream with NVENC a lot. And to do that, all you need is 15Mb internet (lower values in Russia means living in a cave where you don't even have a PC) to put like 8-10k bitrate. It is unquestionably cheaper than buying a beast CPU, not to mention near to no performance cost at all compared to x264

To stream, you don't need a pc... you need a BIG LIT AF corsair case which can contain a full atx and a mini atx comupter CONTEMPORARLY and use the atx (rgb) one to game and the MITX to encode and stream. That's how Linus should do... cus it's never too overkill for Linus.
Can u make a video on how to stream with 2 computers iv tried but there’s always issues and there’s no vids to help
Cool!
Actaully all you need is above good CPU and good internet

Recently upgraded to a Ryzen based system thanks to this video. Running a Ryzen 7 1800X with a GTX 1060 6GB. The parts are on their way, gonna love putting them together.
2 PCs. one for streaming, other for gaming, smartphone for news, tablet for background noise.

Hey Linus, I have been looking around on the best way to stream on a dual pc setup and there really isnt a lot of info out there. The videos that are out there are just not clear and not step by step. I was wondering if you would be willing to make a video on how to set everything up for a dual pc setup, from the obs setup with nvenc to the audio and how to use 1 mic and headset using an audio mixer. and testing out this program that allows you to use 1 keyboard and mouse for both pcs, to find out if there are any input delays. I would really appreciate it if you would consider this video idea.
Amazing I really like those who know what they're talking about. Nice one Linus. Hi from Greece :) I loved the oil pc vid as well. :)

or you can use integrated graphics (i.e. intel graphics) to encode the stream. cpu and gpu free for game.

@Super FURIOUS Gamer make sure to enable igpu in bios first then choose intel quicksync in obs for example. it works for me
Can you make a video about those new bugs called meltdown and spectre ? And how can i avoid them?
Linus, you could use higher shutter speed for less motion blur so we could not see the green screen so easy! Cheers!
what if i have a 144hmz monitor, what kind of capture card would i need for my streaming pc

Interesting question. I've never seen videos streamed greater than 60fps, so I assume you'd just capture at 60Hz like normal and it will drop some of your frames. The monitor shouldn't make a difference, it doesn't affect how many frames your GPU puts out. Even people with 60Hz monitors will be outputting varying framerates from their GPU, so there must be a way to deal with it.

Lets say i get el gato: Ok so gpu conected to el gato, el gato conected to my monitor, BUT stays at 60 hz because is a HDMI port Out from del gato. That means my Gaming monitor wont have the 144hz refresh. How does one overcome this issues. is not that i want to stream at 144fps, i want to stream at 60fps BUT my monitor stay at 144hz

Happy Farmer If you’re streaming with software, e.g. OBS, on the game host, you just set the streaming rate and resolution to whatever is needed; it’s independent of the gameplay. If capturing with hardware on a second PC, you could try setting the graphics card to use two, duplicate, outputs. One via DP at 144Hz and the second via HDMI at 60Hz. If it works it would allow you to continue gaming at 144 while streaming from the 60 Hz source; just ignore the elgato’s passthrough. There is a 4K elgato PCIe card, just released that uses an HDMI specification capable of that higher bandwidth.

Happy Farmer you plug one display port into your monitor and one HDMI cable to the capture card with a mirror of the main display
BYE INTRO WE WON'T MISS YOU
You can stream well on an R5 1600 too. I can stream 2013ish games at 1080p 60 without influencing game or stream quality. But for games such as WWII or Battlefield One, 720 with 32bit sharpening still looking incredibly sharp and doesn't impact performance. It happens to look just as good as 1080p anyways :p
Hey Linus can you show us how to build and set up a gaming server pls. Thanks
