How to Set Up Finger Drumming - Novation Launchkey Mini & Ableton Live Tutorial

Музыка

Welcome to part 3 of this tutorial series. In this video,I’ll show you first how to use my Ableton Live Project (link below) with a Novation Launchkey Mini for finger drumming. Then I’ll walk you step-by-step through creating your own set from scratch in Ableton Live.
By the end of the tutorial, you’ll have created an Ableton project with up to 3 different drum kits that you can easily navigate to with the Launchkey Mini and perform with. You can build upon this Ableton project in future tutorials.
** Download the Ableton Live project here:

The next video in this series will show you how to set up Ableton Live with just about any MIDI keyboard to play synths in a live DJ or electronic music performance set.

Hey DJ, After following your instructions a few times I'm still a bit confused..I'm only able to control the macro knobs when the in control arrow is on red and I can't hear any sounds when i press the pads until I turn the arrow off,in other words I cant scroll thru sounds on the fly..i have to do one action at a time..either move knobs(again only works when red arrow is on) or play sounds with the pads..any idea what I may have done incorrectly?Did I perhaps skip a step somehow? Thanks again for your time and willingness to share your knowledge. You are appreciated.

Any idea if it's possible to utilize the many other rows of pads within the drum rack's "pad overview" using the launch key midi? For instance, I want to use more than 16 pads within the same drum rack but be able to scroll through them on the pad overview using the Launchkey Midi. As of now, the only way i know how to achieve this is through using the computer keyboard to scroll up and down the rows (hold A+z to scroll down, A+x to scroll up). Real useful video regardless, though. Thanks, man.

  • @djenferno

Sure that's definitely possible and I think fairly easy to set up. Go to MIDI effects and put a Pitch effect (and set to +16 semitones) on the drum rack track. Assign a knob to the Pitch on/off button. When you turn the knob, the effect forces all notes to 16 semitones up. I haven't tested it, but I believe this should make your pads play the corresponding pads in the immediate section above default pad area. Make sense?

It might have something to do with a custom folder location for Ableton, or having a more updated version than when the project was made. You should go here and check out the instructions for Automatic Search in the File Manager: help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000346779-How-to-find-and-replace-missing-media-files For the search folder choose the downloaded/unzipped project folder. When I did it, it corrected the path for every sample except the Drake one which I couldn't locate in the project for whatever reason. Also check the "MIDI From" section in your track tabs. It should be set to a LaunchKey Mini. If you however have the more modern LaunchKey Mini mk3 (or some other midi controller) you might need to re-click and update the entry.

Not working in live on mini mk 3 :( I did learn a little bit though. Just can't seem to easily get all 8 or 16 pads to play drums, I pushed shift and 2 pads lit up orange and one green? I'm not entirely sure what that means but either right orange green changes pads to all white with the 4 corners turn pink? After that, I just opened a new live set and chose a full drum set of 8-16 and if all pads are white it should work? I hate how fkn difficult this is, especially in a program free trial. SSSoooo, u just bought hardware, odds are you never used before. they give you software on the most difficult DAW to "learn" how to use. Only to have a barebone version of a difficult program YOU CAN'T USE AFTER FREE TRIAL EXPIRES!! Sorry, I just had to get that out. Sorry

I can't get your project to work in my Standard edition of Live. No matter what I've tried, the pads on my Launchkey mini won't trigger the drum samples. It works if I create a new Live set and throw some random drum onto a new midi clip, so I know I have the hardware set up correctly.

@@DrewMarold I see what the problem is now. I made this set using Ableton Live 10 Suite, so in order to use everything, you'll also need Suite. At the very least, what you can do is try building from scratch along with the video tutorial. It will be learning experience. 🤓

@@djenferno Thanks for taking a look. I figured that might be the problem. Even without it though, the rest of the video on how to set up the drum rack was useful, and I'll see if I can't de/reconstruct your project in Standard to play around with.

Why did he exclude the regular launch key 25 key (not the mini), the keyboard I’m interested in & the reason I’m watching these KZread videos?! All those popular mini keyboards seem like cheap toys to me for people trying to make music inside Starbucks lol....but I’ve noticed they’re the best selling keyboards on some websites like guitar center, I guess because of the cheap price, but it looks like you have to have tiny midget fingers for those mini keyboards! Lol 😂

    L. D. This video is specifically for setting the mini up for finger drumming, not playing keys. I chose it because of its price point, usability, and value for doing finger drum sets, not for playing keys. I believe you’d be more interested in this video which shows you how to set up a launchkey 49 to play keys. kzread.info/dash/bejne/n2ufpKiJo6rRp7g.html
